Chapter 896: Chapter 390 Maya Identity_2
Watching Lin Meng crawl through the window, Lin Wu heaved a sigh of relief, caught the rope that was lowered from the 30th floor, and sent two backpacks up first. Then he went back to transport other supplies.
After that, Lin Wu guided the rope to the pulley, hung the rope on the pulley, and secured the clip. Then he leaped with the rope to the small platform on the 30th floor.
With Lin Meng’s experience, after communication with the base, and considering Xiao Wu’s outstanding physical qualities, Xiao Wu entered the base without any trouble, followed closely by Lin Wu.
On January 6th, the second wave of assembly at Shadow Base concluded, with one person from the base left behind and two new NPCs added.
...
Perhaps due to Xiao Wen’s good performance, everyone was quite enthusiastic about Xiao Wu’s arrival. More importantly, Xiao Wu had helped Lin Meng. Without Xiao Wu, Shadow Base would have lacked someone to assist Lin Wu. The strongest person in terms of Physical Strength at Shadow Refuge was Little Knife; she was a fitness trainer.
The unlucky one was Snow Egg, an average person alongside being severely short-sighted.
Stone was the richest, though a bit frail in health, and the doctor’s advice on his prescription was to exercise more self-control.
Su Shi was a cab driver, therefore gaining a special ability: City Visual Navigation. But Su Shi’s driving skills were terrible. How terrible? He couldn’t drive for 500 meters on a normal road without crossing the lines. So, whether this ability was useful or not was still questionable.
Shana was a typical Social Animal, not affected by occupational diseases yet due to her recent employment.
A meeting was held in the conference room by seven people for reasons such as wormholes and Blue Star, to which Xiao Wen and Xiao Wu had no objections, chatting over tea during the meeting. During the meeting, Lin Wu, having lost at rock-paper-scissors, came out to fetch hot water for tea and found Xiao Wu kindly helping Xiao Wen lick the saliva from inside her lips.
What the fuck? What is this? Lin Wu wondered, never noticing anything special about Xiao Wu.
In fact, it wasn’t that Xiao Wu lacked charm, but neither Blood Meng nor Lin Meng treated him as a person. Xiao Wen was different; feeling kinship upon meeting another Earthling like Xiao Wu, he was especially amiable. Facing the end of the world, Xiao Wen always felt helpless, while people like Stone showed a sense of detachment.
As for Xiao Jing, she was just a naive schoolgirl, not Xiao Wu’s type at all.
Both of them noticed Lin Wu and stood up together, creating an awkward atmosphere. Lin Wu hummed for a while and directed, "We might have to fight a protracted battle, so we have to be vigilant about contraception. Where’s the hot water?"
"Over there," Xiao Wen pointed in haste.
Lin Wu nodded, fetched the hot water, and returned quickly to the conference room, where Lin Meng’s report was coming to an end: "According to the records, Maya is a mother who killed eighteen people from five families in one week, as well as two police officers who pursued her because her son died from bullying."
Stone asked in alarm, "That intense? What’s her background?"
Lin Meng replied, "The records don’t provide a background, just this sensational case. She has been sentenced to death and is awaiting approval. However, her lawyer submitted a psychiatric evaluation report, with some psychologists believing her mental breakdown was caused by the loss of her son. Blood Meng said, the lack of any background information on such a sensational case means Maya has a powerful background. One particular case is suspicious, she killed five people with a dining fork, three of them adult males."
Lin Meng continued, "We watched part of the footage of her post-arrest interrogation and I believe Maya truly went insane; her eyes were terrifying, enough to make the interrogators shudder. She’s a first-class bloodthirsty criminal."
Stone nodded, "These are minor issues. The key is what do we do next?" Why bother about Maya’s past?
"Let’s make a phone call," Lin Wu pulled out his satellite phone and dialed.
Blood Meng answered the call, "Speak."
Lin Wu restrained himself, asking, "Did people from East Suburb Shelter get in touch with the convicts who took over the prison, and they need a phone to maintain communication, right? Can you find out the prison’s phone number?"
Blood Meng scoffed, "You idiot. It’s just the wireless signal that’s down, landline phones are still operational. The military has dedicated communication fiber optic cables; there must be a landline at the prison."
Lin Wu asked, "Can the landline be used after a power outage? Can it be used if no one’s at their post?"
Blood Meng replied, "Whether it can be used after a power outage, I don’t know. I guess the telecommunication office would activate backup power. What do you mean? Is there a power outage?"
Lin Wu countered, "You don’t have a power outage?"
"No," Nightmare said, "but a power outage is expected. You’d better be prepared. Also, if you want to contact Maya, you should act quickly."
Lin Wu said, "Nightmare, can you get the prison phone number?"
"I can try, and I’ll contact you if I find it," Nightmare asked, "What about Lin Meng? Is she alive?"
Lin Wu glanced at Lin Meng: "Alive and kicking."
Nightmare: "I’ll contact you again later."
After Lin Wu hung up the phone, Lin Meng curiously asked, "Nightmare hasn’t evacuated yet, what does she eat?"
Lin Wu thought for a moment, then replied, "Human flesh."
Lin Meng: "Not funny."
Lin Wu said, "It’s not that kind of cannibalism. It’s worse than cannibalism." The emergency room had food, stored in the morgue refrigerators. The original owner of the food was a timid nurse who had decided to stay in the morgue. After determining to stay, Nightmare would not let her waste food. If Blood Meng’s condition could improve shortly, and Nightmare still had a retreat route, then Xiao Jing might survive. Otherwise, Xiao Jing should not waste food either.
Thinking of this, Lin Wu suddenly felt a sense of aversion. He had always considered Xiao Jing and the nurse as binary figures, 1 and 0, and it was hard to bear thinking about their possible fates. Xiao Jing could be explained as having mixed with him for about a day, but what about the nurse?
He couldn’t think about this anymore. Otherwise, he wouldn’t only be shortening his own life, but he might also drag down the team.
Nightmare called again, "Write down the numbers. One is the External Affairs Department phone number, one is the warden’s office phone number, and one is the recreation area switchboard." The recreation area had several phones, and prisoners could use the switchboard to contact their registered immediate family members, with the call duration determined by their behavior in prison. As for the so-called External Affairs Department, it was responsible for building a communication bridge between the inside and outside of the prison, for things such as scheduling family visitation days, sending sick prisoners to the hospital, or informing relatives of a prisoner’s death.
Nightmare said, "That’s all I could find for now."
Lin Wu feigned concern, "How’s Blood Meng? Are you all okay?"
"Um, not bad."
This tone made Lin Wu angry.
Nightmare added, "Xiao Jing is doing well, she’s been a lot of help, and the situation is a bit better than expected."
Lin Wu said, "Good, then keep it up," and hung up the phone.
Lin Wu dialed the External Affairs number, "Can a satellite phone call a landline?"
Everyone looked at each other, no one could answer this question, but the operator’s voice indicated it was possible, and the call was connected, a female voice came through, assertive and dominant: "Speak!"
Shana said, "I’m looking for Maya."
"Don’t know her," and the call was hung up.
They glanced at each other, and Shana dialed the second number. A man answered: "Who’s this?" Polite in speech, but extremely haughty in tone.
Shana said, "I’m looking for Maya."
"This is our territory," and he too hung up the call.
Lin Wu took out his phone and opened the map, realizing that the southern suburbs had not only a women’s prison but also a men’s prison. The two prisons were separated by two fences, with the main administrative area of the prisons in between. The warden’s office, the prison guards’ cafeteria, dormitories, and such were all located there.
Shana said, "It seems that the women’s and men’s prisons each control certain areas, and it’s possible that there might be fights."
"Can we ask Xiao Wu about the prison?" Xiao Wu was a criminal detective, so he should be familiar with the prison’s situation.
