Chapter 882: Chapter 385 On the Road_2
Xiao Jing said, "Using alcohol won’t be a problem, but not using it might be." That’s the reasoning, and so Blood Meng and Lin Meng took a piece of gauze, soaked it in alcohol, and applied it to the wound.
When they turned around to see Blood Meng fainting again, Blood Meng made a split-second decision: "Sew it up now."
Xiao Jing knew how to stitch up a wound, so she took a large fishhook-like needle and began suturing. Blood Meng breathed a sigh of relief, wiped off sweat with his sleeve, and said, "I leave it in your hands." Having said that, he walked out of the emergency room, as fatigued as a doctor after a ten-hour surgery.
Lin Wu raised his hand at the reception desk, and Blood Meng walked over. After Lin Wu inquired about the situation, he asked, "What are your plans now?" Blood Meng’s route involved taking the subway and then floating down the river to where the boats were. With Blood Meng’s condition, it was impossible to take the subway or float. Unlike in a game, Blood Meng’s wound wouldn’t heal in just a few hours; at the very least, it would take a week before Blood Meng could walk again. After all, it was quite a large wound.
Blood Meng said, "I have to stay here."
A herd of metaphorical "F**k" sprinted through Lin Wu’s mind. In his original plan, no matter what happened, Xiao Jing would surely go with Blood Meng. He had been wanting to shake off this burden. Look at Xiao Wu: even though he lost a middle finger, his combat capability was still very strong. Now, Lin Wu had no choice but to take Xiao Jing with him.
During the surgery, Lin Wu had reconfirmed the map, boiling his plan down to one word: rush. Drive an ambulance straight to the subway station; there was no knowing whether it could break through the entrance, but the plan was to drive until the vehicle could go no further. Time waits for no one. It was raining outside, and the pressure on the Southern District Reservoir was building. If the dam broke, it would inevitably flood the underground tunnels of Day After Tomorrow City. By then, there would be no choice but to walk on streets swarming with zombies.
Lin Wu asked, "What will you eat?" There shouldn’t be a problem with drinking, as there were stocks of glucose on the fourth floor.
Blood Meng said, "A person won’t die if they don’t eat for a week."
Lin Wu said, "When the dam breaks, not to mention taking the subway line, who knows where your little boat will end up."
"I can’t just abandon her."
"Then I can only wish you good luck."
Blood Meng opened his backpack, handed over two satellite phones and two batteries, "The numbers are attached to them." He then handed over the drone and the remote control to Lin Wu.
"Thanks."
"Heh, you’ve become a man of civility on Earth too, can’t you just take it yourself?" He had wanted to say Hardcore Mode, but considering Xiao Wu was nearby, he opted for Earth. The last thing he wanted to do was explain his origin; using Lin Wu’s readymade excuse was the most convenient.
"Heh. Xiao Jing, Lin Meng, we’re leaving."
The two came out, and Xiao Jing said, "Brother Lin Wu, I want to stay. Although I’m just a newcomer, at least I know a bit about medicine." She had already noticed that, apart from using alcohol for disinfection, the Blue Star people had no basic medical knowledge.
Lin Wu said, "You don’t even know how to inject a needle; what use would you have staying here?"
Xiao Jing said, "I can learn. At the very least, I know how to stitch and I can read the names on the vials of medicine."
Lin Wu said, "You would have a higher chance of survival if you come with me now."
Lin Meng questioned, "Is that so?"
A flick of a finger.
Lin Meng shut up, and Xiao Jing said, "Both choices are dangerous. At least I can help out here, but I won’t be able to do anything by your side."
"Are you sure?"
"Mhm." Xiao Jing nodded firmly, "The aim of my medical studies was to help others, not just to accept help from them."
Lin Wu didn’t say anything more. He opened the weapons bag, laid an AK rifle on the table along with two magazines, then distributed the remaining two AK rifles between Xiao Wu and Lin Meng. Blood Meng said, "All the bullets in Lin Meng’s backpack are yours now."
Lin Wu asked, "How much?"
Lin Meng said, "Five boxes."
Lin Wu said, "Leave one box."
Lin Meng placed a box of bullets on the counter, and Lin Wu reached out for a handshake with Blood Meng, "Please convey my concern to Blood Meng."
"Sure, take care."
"Take care. We’re going."
...
The second ambulance was driven away by Lin Wu, leaving the last ambulance as the final chance for survival for Blood Meng and the others. Although Xiao Wu worked as an errand boy in the special forces, he had formal training. He became the driver of the ambulance.
Xiao Wu kept the speed between 35-40, to ensure they could outrun the zombies while giving themselves more time to observe and react. Even so, they hit two zombies as they drove out of the hospital’s main gate. With abandoned cars scattered around the hospital entrance, Xiao Wu had to drive on the sidewalk. It was hard to tell what they hit along the way, but they finally made it to the subway entrance steps smoothly.
"Drive down." Feeling Xiao Wu’s hesitation, Lin Wu promptly ordered.
Xiao Wu stepped on the gas, gripping the steering wheel tightly. Halfway down the stairs, the left front tire burst with a pop, and the undercarriage kept being hit. The car continued to push downward, and seizing the right moment, Xiao Wu steered to the right, narrowly brushing past the electronic ticket machine. Ahead was the ticket barrier, and Xiao Wu floored the accelerator.
The ambulance crashed into the gate, pushing up two columns of the barrier and rushing in amidst a crashing noise. Xiao Wu was now full throttle, irrespective of what might happen.
The ambulance charged down another set of stairs, but this time they weren’t so lucky. They got stuck on something or for some other reason, the ambulance lost balance and started rolling downward. Fortunately, it only flipped a few times before coming to a stop. Miraculously, the ambulance didn’t stall, but they had reached the bottom.
This was a platform, and although there were no zombies, there were many people—at least thirty. Some sat on makeshift bedding, others warmed themselves by a fire. Among them were drivers or passengers who had been stuck on the road and chose to walk off the highway into the subway station. Others had walked there from different subway stations.
