Chapter 878: Chapter 384 Gratitude, Resentment, Love, and Hatred
The ICU is located on the fourth floor of the outpatient building. Due to the fully enclosed windows and corridors above the third floor, to get to the fourth floor, one must go through the lobby on the first floor of the outpatient clinic. There is one route by taking the elevator at the center of the lobby to the fourth floor. Another is to enter from the front door of the outpatient clinic, turn left up the escalator, reach the third floor via the escalator, and then ascend to the fourth floor by the staircase on the left. The last one is to take the back door, pass the restroom, walk down the corridor, and turn right to directly take the stairs.
While Blood Meng was pondering over the map, the scout Lin Wu returned. Although he didn’t have bonuses to Stealth and Agility, his tactical awareness was still very sharp.
"Can’t do it," Lin Wu said as he drew with a pen, "There’s a large group at the front entrance, slightly dispersed. Visual estimate: the number of zombies per square meter in the first-floor hall exceeds one. Even shooting one by one, I reckon there won’t be enough bullets to go around." The outpatient building covers a large area, with the first-floor housing the pharmacy, registration desks, medicine collection points, pre-employment medical examination departments, etc. It’s the part of the hospital with the largest flow of people.
Lin Wu said: "Turning left to take the escalator, the escalator’s upper and lower ends are packed with zombies. The second floor is semi-open, shaped like a standard running track, hollowed in the middle, overlooking the first floor, with various outpatient departments along the circular edge. The number of zombies in the corridors is astounding. I can responsibly say: there is absolutely no way to fight up there."
Let alone reaching the fourth floor, even if Lin Wu contributed his rifle and submachine gun, it would still be hard to forcefully counter the zombies on the first floor. That place is open on all sides, easily susceptible to assault, and in our team of five, there are only three real marksman—Lin Wu, Blood Meng, Lin Meng and Xiao Wu, each counts as half.
Blood Meng pointed to the ambulance outside the door: "Rush into it."
"Are you crazy?" Lin Wu asked, "And how do we get out? Drive a hospital bed out from the fourth floor?"
Blood Meng’s idea was to drive the car to the elevator area, quickly get out and take the elevator to the fourth floor. Not to mention how risky this plan was. Even if successful, how would they leave the outpatient building?
Blood Meng: "On the fourth floor, tear up the bed sheets to make ropes, descend from the left side of the building, and return to the emergency area."
Lin Wu questioned: "How much does she owe you, really?"
"Are you in or not?" Blood Meng asked, "If not, I’ll do it myself. If you’re willing to help me, I’ll give you two satellite phones and two batteries."
"Of course not."
Blood Meng said: "I’ll add a drone."
"Could a drone be more useful than my Little Fight?" Lin Wu said, "We should retreat."
Blood Meng grabbed Lin Wu’s arm and said, "I have nothing else."
Lin Wu hesitantly asked, "Why do you have to save Blood Meng so badly?"
Blood Meng said, "Firstly, because it just started, and secondly, it’s my personal matter. Please help me."
This was the first time Blood Meng lowered her tone; no matter how dire her situation before, she was always tough-talking. Lin Meng, watchings with a soft heart on the side, said: "Hey, help her out."
"It’s not about whether to help or not, but about all of us dying inside," Lin Wu looked at Lin Meng and said, "I can help, but apart from the conditions above, this chick belongs to me from now on."
Blood Meng: "She is not my property, I have no right to decide."
Knowing that Lin Wu intended to help and taking the chance to exclude herself, Lin Meng said, "I’m willing."
Blood Meng, surprised: "You’re eager."
Lin Wu opened his gun bag, took out two submachine guns and four magazines, handing them to Xiao Wu and Lin Meng: "If we don’t come back, you guys escape on your own. There are two ambulances here, there’s a chance if you make a run for it."
Lin Meng hurriedly said, "I want to go too."
"I’ve just won a bit of a gamble on you, what’s the point if you die?"
Lin Meng: "I will go even if you don’t."
Lin Wu was speechless and said, "Find bed sheets, tear them into strips and bind them around your hands, feet, neck, and head." If it were Maya or Shana, he would not agree to take such a risk. As for Lin Wu, he often doesn’t consider the maximum benefit. From the time he met Blood Meng until now, Lin Wu always felt that he owed her something. However, that wasn’t the most important thing; the most important was the determination that Blood Meng showed in trying to save or see Blood Meng as a zombie, which genuinely moved Lin Wu.
Although he didn’t know how much money was owed, just as Lin Meng’s determination moved Maya, the perseverance of a companion often easily touched Lin Wu.
Of course, satellite phones were also great stuff and would be the only long-distance communication tool in the future, let alone the drone.
Lin Wu decided to extort a bit more, saying to Blood Meng: "You owe me one."
Blood Meng was quite grateful and said, "Thank you." She knew that without Lin Wu’s help, she could never succeed.
...
At the entrance were three ambulances. The group first located the keys in the driver’s rest area on the fourth floor, then matched them to the ambulances. After everything was ready, Blood Meng asked inside the vehicle: "Are you ready?"
Lin Wu checked his rifle and pistol: "Let’s go."
The car started moving, Lin Meng: "I haven’t answered yet."
Blood Meng hastily hit the brakes, Lin Meng: "Ready." It’s not about me being ready, but rather that I hadn’t said ’ready.’
I tolerate it because I’m asking for help!
The ambulance started to speed up, but since the distance was short, there wasn’t enough acceleration. Ultimately, the ambulance hit the zombies at a speed of 50 mph, then kept bumping up the slight slope, banging and clanging along the way. Blood Meng floored the gas pedal, the engine roared, but the speed just wouldn’t increase. Blood Meng turned right into the outpatient lobby; under the headlights, the sight of the swarming zombies was truly spine-chilling.
"Come up front." Blood Meng knew they couldn’t possibly drift at this speed.
Lin Wu immediately crawled from the back of the vehicle toward the passenger seat. The car kept hitting zombies, making it difficult for him to stabilize himself, and he accidentally knocked over Lin Meng behind him. The ambulance banged its way into the elevator area. Blood Meng tried hard to steer, and the ambulance leaned against the wall on the right side, with the tail against the wall, barely able to open the door on the passenger side.
