Chapter 859: Chapter 376: NPC Brothers_2
Lin Wu was furious, turning his head: "Are you seeking death?"
"Boss." Xiao Wu said, "I’ll take you to the parking lot." After saying that, he wiped away his tears: "I should have believed in you from the start."
"Belief my ass." Lin Wu saw zombies appearing fifty meters away at the end of the alley: "Let’s go, quickly."
Xiao Wu glanced back, then immediately started to run, taking the lead. Both of their speeds were fast, with no chance for conversation along the way. Fortunately, for now, the zombies were not interested in the alleys and did not pursue them.
Exiting the alley and passing a street, they saw no zombies, but the street was in chaos, with cars piled up in chain collisions, blocking the road. This street also ended on Round City Road.
Xiao Wu saw a woman lying on the ground in pain and instinctively stopped to approach her, when suddenly a zombie emerged from behind a bus and ran towards Xiao Wu. Lin Wu aimed his gun and the crosshair followed the zombie seven meters away as it moved sideways, he then pulled the trigger. The zombie was shot in the head and fell in front of Xiao Wu, between him and the woman.
"If you don’t want to die, keep moving."
Xiao Wu apologetically shook his head at the woman pleadingly looking at him, then turned and ran back into the alleys. This time they were not so lucky; four zombies from the horde on Round City Road had set their sights on them, relentlessly giving chase.
Seeing the relentless pursuit of the zombies, Lin Wu stopped and turned around. In the past year and a half, 90% of his close-quarters gunfights were real combat, with Lock Head accounting for the remaining 10%. Entering Hardcore Mode would frequently cause discomfort afterwards. Therefore, under normal circumstances, Lin Wu had abandoned the skill of close-range Lock Head and developed the ability and courage to fight zombies at close range, his handgun close combat skills were comparable to Keanu Reeves.
He dodged the last zombie’s lunge by crouching down - a bullet entered from under the zombie’s chin and exploded its head. The dead body slammed against Lin Wu’s shoulder, and he pushed the zombie aside. Turning to Xiao Wu, he saw that Xiao Wu hadn’t fled on his own; instead, he had picked up a bench from the ground, ready to join the fight. Lin Wu walked over and handed Xiao Wu his spare gun: "Let’s move."
Having a helper to share the burden wasn’t too bad.
Due to physical exertion, the two of them switched from running to walking briskly. Xiao Wu began to ask questions: "Who are you? How did you know about the zombies?"
Lin Wu countered, "Do you hate Xiao Mei?"
Not only was Xiao Wu stumped by the question, but it also dragged him back into the memories of just ten minutes prior. The image of Xiao Mei being gnawed on by zombies left him unsure how to respond.
Lin Wu didn’t give Xiao Wu a chance to ponder, continuing his questioning: "How did you transition from being a presidential bodyguard to a detective?"
Xiao Wu waved his hand, sighing: "Everyone I protected died - the First Lady, the Vice President, foreign dignitaries... Even when I was part of the Witness Protection, the curse didn’t lift, with each case followed by death."
Lin Wu felt the urge to shoot someone.
Xiao Wu said, "Just kidding. I was a rookie, never had the chance to protect any VIPs; I was just running errands within the Secret Service. The boss’s boss’s boss abused his power and made me chauffeur his son to and from school."
Lin Wu asked, "And then? His son died?" He took a piece of cake placed on the side of the road for display purposes – what a godforsaken city, not even a single doughnut. When the shop attendant attempted to stop him, Lin Wu pointed his gun, and the attendant sent him off with a friendly smile.
Xiao Wu pretended not to see, saying, "Of course not, his son’s mother is called Da Mei, a graceful and learned beautiful woman."
Lin Wu looked at Xiao Wu, who admitted frankly, "That’s right, that’s the story. I was happy for half a year, but the following years were miserable. In the end, it was Da Mei who, through personal connections, got me out of the island. She arranged for me to work in Day After Tomorrow City."
"And Xiao Mei?"
"She’s Da Mei’s younger sister. Da Mei arranged for her sister to look after me since I was a stranger in Day After Tomorrow City."
Lin Wu gave a thumbs up, "Why did you get divorced?"
"Because my colleagues all liked me, maybe a few too much. You know, in certain matters, going against a woman’s will is a crime."
Lin Wu, "So it’s not that you protect someone and they die; you’re the one targeting people close to you."
Xiao Wu candidly confessed, "I admit I’m not perfect in some aspects, but they all loved me."
In truth, that was accurate; otherwise, Xiao Mei wouldn’t have given him a radio – she would’ve been glad if the kidnappers had followed through. Also, after many days, Da Mei, risking her husband’s anger, still used her connections for him. This certainly also proved the point.
Xiao Wu led Lin Wu through several streets to a road with few people and few shops. One side of the road was sloped, with a row of iron railings installed on top. This was the parking lot. Vehicles involved in accidents would be stored here before and after judicial appraisal, as well as stolen cars, looter’s cars, and any cars that had been towed away for violating traffic regulations were also stored here.
A small iron gate led up a step from the slope, inside was a guard booth. Xiao Wu knocked on the iron gate: "Jason."
"Hey, Xiao Wu." The chubby guard came to the gate: "Xiao Mei’s not on shift."
Xiao Wu presented his badge, saying, "I’m here on official business today."
The chubby guard was troubled, "You need court documents." He thought Xiao Wu was there to privately investigate a stolen car.
Xiao Wu, "I’ll treat you tonight."
The guard chuckled and returned to the booth to open the gate, then, once they were inside, closed the gate behind them, advising, "Feel free to look around."
Xiao Wu and the guard waved their hands in thanks, and Lin Wu asked, "Aren’t you going to warn him?"
"He’d think I was insane and kick us out before seeing a zombie. Do you think he’d be able to outrun a zombie after seeing one?" Xiao Wu climbed up a surveillance tower, a ladder five meters high, convenient for parking lot security to monitor the area. He called Lin Wu up: "This is the biggest parking lot in Day After Tomorrow City."
