Chapter 853: Chapter 374: Lin the Butcher
Blood Meng glanced to her side and saw a vehicle speeding straight toward them from 50 meters ahead on the left. Without time to think, she instinctively pulled the handbrake with one hand and violently turned the steering wheel with the other. The car spun half a circle, took off into the air, flipped several times, landed on all four wheels, flipped once more, and then landed on all four wheels again.
The vehicle on the left reacted too late and flew past the tumbling car, crashing headfirst into a streetlamp on the roadside. The instant destruction of the car and the obvious fatal outcome showcased the vehicle’s high speed and its clear intent to ram Blood Meng’s car.
Lin Wu, who hadn’t buckled his seatbelt, was thrown with a concussion, and when he came to, the vehicle was already moving forward. Shaking his head, he gave a thumbs up and said, "Sis, need a foot-washing attendant?"
"Ha ha." Blood Meng laughed heartily. Only she knew that the rollover was due to the SUV’s high chassis and her unfamiliarity with the vehicle. Given optimal conditions, she could have drifted the car to execute a U-turn on the spot. Fortunately, the number of rolls was even, which not only saved her face but also bought them some time.
Lin Wu shouted over the wind noise from the broken windows, "Sis, they came prepared."
Blood Meng realized immediately, "Snake Skin must have tipped them off. I should have suspected it; he’s my most reliable informant. If the bad guys are onto me, they would have definitely troubled him. Get ready for battle."
Lin Wu was puzzled, "They shouldn’t be able to catch up at this speed, right? They need to mobilize more people."
"They’re very professional," Blood Meng said. "If I were them, I’d have ambushed a squad near the hotel, because the hotel is one of the clues."
Blood Meng set her long gun in the backseat as Lin Wu grabbed an M4, checked the magazine, and handed it to Blood Meng, who stood the rifle upright by her seat.
Lin Wu suggested, "Sis, drop me at the hotel and then you take off."
"That’s the plan, but that depends on whether they’ll give me the chance," Blood Meng pointed to the sky.
Lin Wu lowered the window, looked up, and saw a drone following them, less than 20 meters away – they had been marked. His only hope was that their pursuers were understaffed or poorly positioned.
Blood Meng shattered his illusion with just one sentence as she glanced at the blinking central control screen, "They already know where we’re going."
"What do you mean?"
"Drone transmission, hacker infiltrated. Even though this car is a traditional mechanical model and they can’t control it through its computer, I’m sure they know our destination. A zombie game has turned into ’Grand Theft Auto’ for us."
Lin Wu was familiar with Grand Theft Auto, having played over a hundred hours of it. The franchise was up to its 50th installment, each title controversial, each highly successful.
Both resolved and ready to face any difficulty, they maintained a good attitude, partly because they knew this was all a game and there was no real fear of death.
Veering off the main road and into regular streets, their speed dropped considerably. When they were five kilometers from Handsome Hotel, hitmen appeared again, driving two SUVs that emerged from both sides of the road, boxing in Lin Xue’s vehicle. They didn’t open fire or show hostility; they seemed like ordinary cars.
But their prey was more vicious than they had anticipated. Indifferent to whether they were ordinary people or to the lives of innocents on the street, they just raised the AK rifle and began to fire.
Lin Wu leaned out of the sunroof to shoot at the vehicle 15 meters ahead. Bullets easily tore through the car’s shell, entered through the trunk, passed through bodies and seats, and exited through the front windshield. In seven seconds, the four individuals in the front car were all killed. As the driver died, he turned the steering wheel, and the car veered off the road into a supermarket before exploding.
The car behind immediately dropped its pretense; the rear window was lowered, and two gunmen leaned out to fire. However, they used submachine guns, which had significantly less penetration power than the 7.62 rounds of the AK rifle, and since they weren’t shooting straight, after a full barrage, Lin Wu realized he hadn’t been hit at all. After quickly reloading, he retaliated.
As he stood up, the car behind hesitated, and the driver made a sharp left turn, crashing onto the sidewalk in a self-destructive manner, and stopped against a shop wall.
"Ha ha," Lin Wu laughed, sitting back down. "Sis, you overestimated them."
"Uh-huh," Blood Meng uttered, focusing ahead where the Handsome Hotel sign was now visible.
Lin Wu looked at Blood Meng in confusion, reached out to touch her abdomen, and felt blood, "You’ve been shot?"
"Uh-huh."
"Stop the car."
"Why stop?"
Lin Wu insisted, "I’m taking you to the hospital."
Blood Meng replied, "It’s 7:18 now." Going to the hospital might treat the gunshot, but it would be difficult for her to escape afterwards. After the surgery and when the anesthesia wore off, she reckoned the entire city would be overrun by zombies.
"Stop the car, stop the car."
As Lin Wu shouted, the car stopped in front of the hotel. He switched off the engine, took the keys from the center console, got out, and Blood Meng asked, "What are you doing?"
Lin Wu ran to the hotel registration desk, and with the sound of a gunshot, he took the keys, hopped into the car next to the registration desk, and drove it to Blood Meng’s side. Getting out, he opened the driver’s side door and didn’t waste time with Blood Meng. He cut the seatbelt and lifted her up.
Indeed, he noted how surprisingly easy it was to carry a body. It reminded him of a time in the snow when Maya had injured her foot, and he had to carry her onto a horse – a memory not fondly recalled.
