Chapter 843: Chapter 377 New Identity
After a brief few seconds of darkness, Lin Wu’s eyes brightened as he found himself in a place. A room, a restroom, a bed, and then nothing more—cheap curtains, cheap flooring, and a layer of dust on the lightbulb. All of his possessions were gone, save for the most basic set of clothes he had on when he boarded the spaceship.
It seemed he had been reborn as a poor man.
There were five boxes on the floor: a suitcase, a small suitcase, a carry-on, a backpack, and a hiking pack. The closet was open, filled with various suits and even shoes. And the most important envelope lay on the bed.
Lin Wu stepped forward, picked up the envelope, and opened it: "Hello, Mr. Lin Wu..."
Just as he read this, the rear window’s glass shattered, and a jar was thrown in. Lin Wu glanced at the jar and cursed internally. The jar exploded, the front door was kicked in, the windows were smashed, and two groups of fully armed police officers with guns stormed into the room. One officer flipped Lin Wu over on the bed and began searching him. The other officers inspected the rest of the room.
As Lin Wu was still reeling from the ringing in his ears and the blindness, a hood was slipped over his head, and two officers escorted him out the door and into a car. Despite Lin Wu’s yelling and screaming in the car, the officers on either side ignored him, driving straight to the police station.
Once the hood was removed, Lin Wu could see an underground parking lot filled with police cars. The two officers took Lin Wu into an elevator and ascended to the 18th floor. Lin Wu said, "Uncles, what’s happening?"
"I’m new here."
"You must have got the wrong person, right?"
No matter what Lin Wu said, the officers remained silent, taking him off the elevator on the 18th floor and pushing him into an interrogation room with only a table and three chairs. An officer pushed Lin Wu down into a seat, then finally uncuffed his hands before both officers left the room and shut the door.
Lin Wu looked up at the two surveillance cameras on the ceiling, both working, indicating someone was watching him. Twilight Elder, I wonder why you were so kind yesterday. Could it be you laughed when you saw me draw the envelope? Now, forget about procuring supplies; I can’t even find my own home, let alone secure my release.
Lin Wu waited a while, then decided to take the initiative, raising his middle finger at the cameras. This tactic worked, and soon the door opened, and two plainclothes men walked into the interrogation room, taking their seats and staring silently at Lin Wu.
After a while, Officer A said, "Mr. Bodde is very unhappy, you weren’t supposed to make it here alive."
Bodde? Lin Wu searched his system, which indicated he did not know anyone named Bodde.
Lin Wu said, "I’m not happy either. I want to see my lawyer." His lawyer: doesn’t exist. Damn, he didn’t even have a lawyer. Girlfriend: none. So what did he have? A criminal record, for heaven’s sake. Three years ago, he’d been incarcerated for 18 months due to a theft. How could he have been a thief when he was this poor?
Officer B, seeing Lin Wu composed, said, "We found your fingerprints in the room and on the windowsill. The situation is clear. You can choose to cooperate and hand over the gold, and we’ll charge you with theft. Or, we release you, and the moment you walk out the door, you’ll disappear—completely."
Lin Wu said, "I choose to disappear."
Officer B seemed surprised, "You can’t possibly be ignorant of what happens to those who cross Mr. Bodde, can you?"
Lin Wu replied, "I don’t know who Mr. Bodde is."
Officer A interjected, "Sorry, this has been a mistake. Mr. Bodde is a powerful local figure, even the mayor is his friend, and his business extends across the entire city. You should understand what kind of person he is by now. We in Day After Tomorrow City welcome tourists, but not ones like you."
Lin Wu reflected for a moment, "I want a lawyer."
"You may have a lawyer." The officer took out his phone, "Tell me the number, and I’ll dial it. I’m curious to see who’d dare cross Mr. Bodde."
Lin Wu searched his system for a lawyer’s phone number. There wasn’t one; he had no memory of any lawyer’s number. Cousin: none. Mom: none. Brother: none. Accomplices: none. What the hell.
Lin Wu spat out in frustration, "I’ve been wronged." What a farce.
The two officers whispered to each other for a bit, and one left the room. Shortly after, two uniformed officers came to take Lin Wu away. Lin Wu said, "I can go back by myself. Just tell me where you found me."
The uniformed officers remained silent, leading Lin Wu to the end of the corridor, opening an iron door, and pushing him inside. It was a temporary detention cell of about 20 square meters, surrounded by iron bars, with a long cement bench against the wall and a squat toilet. There was an old man and a middle-aged man in the cell.
Lin Wu hastily said to the officers, "I still want to talk to the officer, give me a chance." What a lousy game. Would it be safer here? The police headquarters had firepower, and being locked up here seemed relatively safe. But of course, that wasn’t true. Safe for a day or two, but after three or four? Besides, the police were the most likely to encounter zombies.
Time ticked away, and after shouting and calling for an hour, Officer A finally arrived, "Ready to confess?"
"Please tell Mr. Bodde that if he wants to know the whereabouts of the gold, he has to get me out of here. Then give me 24 hours of freedom, or he will never see that gold in his lifetime."
Officer A replied, "We won’t let Bodde do as he pleases. We have a duty to ensure your safety."
