Chapter 83 - 82: The Master
Chapter 83: Chapter 82: The Master
Within the first minute of the siege, Lin Wu and Maya sensed something was off. At the Shadow Base during a five-star siege, only six zombies had appeared in the first minute, but at the Invincible Base, there were fifteen. By the second minute, the number of zombies began to rise exponentially, and Frenzy appeared.
"Frenzy," Emerald Feather shouted, and Group B immediately shifted their position to provide support to the south.
Maya yelled anxiously, "Get back to your posts." Even a few ordinary zombies slipping into the main building could be fatal.
In the midst of speaking, Frenzy took a step on the railing and leapt straight onto the rooftop. Lin Wu met the challenge head-on, delivering a Wind Stinger slash to execute a stun, his left hand pinning down Frenzy, then following up with two more strikes to finish it off.
Group B, who hurried over, looked at the fallen Frenzy, then at each other, unsure of what to do for a moment, until Maya shouted, "Go back."
By the third minute, a tidal wave of zombies appeared. Groups C and D fired frantically, but still, several zombies reached the main building. Maya leaped down from the rooftop, turned around, and shot two zombies dead with her pistol, then shot at the zombies that had tumbled over the railing and stood up. Taking advantage of their lack of acceleration, she ruthlessly shot them dead at a three-meter distance.
Lin Wu also jumped down from the rooftop, ran to the edge of the railing, and with swift cuts, executed each zombie that came over the railing. Maya became Lin Wu’s guardian, prioritizing any zombies standing up that threatened to attack him, allowing Lin Wu to work without distraction.
In the fourth minute, the zombies piled up like a mountain outside the southern railing, all queuing up to climb over. Fortunately, there was only so much space to scale, and under Maya’s gunfire aiming for headshots and Lin Wu’s deadly slices, they firmly held the southern line.
"Frenzy," Maya warned.
Frenzy leapt at Lin Wu who was bent over executing executions, but without glancing upward, Lin Wu dodged with Wind Stinger. Frenzy lunged at Lin Wu with one step, but Lin Wu’s left hand, transformed into a Beast Trap, clapped down on Frenzy’s head. After a critical hit from the Beast Trap, Frenzy fell to the ground and Lin Wu followed through with two more cuts to finish it. One Wind Stinger later, he was back under the railing, continuing the executions.
This was the first time since entering the game that Lin Wu had gone into a killing frenzy. The sheer number of zombies was overwhelming, and soon Lin Wu found himself executing in a completely mechanical and instinctual mode. The zombies, too, had gone mad, desperately squeezing toward the railing, climbing over it like ants.
Due to the excessive accumulation of bodies, the system activated the Quick Refresh System, changing the time each body remained from one minute to half a minute, then to 10 seconds, and finally, each body was kept for only two seconds.
Maya shouted, "Frenzy, two of them."
Lin Wu slapped a Beast Trap onto the head of Frenzy A with his left hand, his left hand then brushing over the head of Frenzy B lunging toward him, entrapping it as well. He then bent down and chopped away like he was chopping vegetables. This move left the Invincible players on the rooftop dumbfounded. A woman who shot headshots with every bullet and a man whose every slice was deadly completely overturned their perception of the Shadow Base.
Starting in the fifth minute, the number of zombies entering no longer increased, but the number of Frenzies slowly began to rise. Perhaps realizing that there was a Frenzy assassin on the southern line, the Frenzies started seeking breakthroughs on the western and northern fronts.
"Frenzy," Group B called for help.
"Lin Wu."
"Roger that," Lin Wu ran to the west, took down one, and then another appeared in the north, which Lin Wu also eliminated.
After Lin Wu left, Emerald Feather and his companions went downstairs. Two of his comrades stepped forward to take over Lin Wu’s job of executing the zombies on the ground, while Emerald Feather and Maya stood side by side, taking headshots at any zombies that got up. But with Emerald Feather’s and his team’s lack of firepower from above, the number of zombies that needed executing increased drastically, and not only did one manage to stand up, but it also grappled with one of the men executing zombies.
Due to such a minor deviation, the southern defensive line was about to collapse. At the critical moment, Maya pulled out a tube-shaped bomb and lit it, "Explode." She threw it beyond the railing. Accompanied by an explosion, the zombies piled up outside the railings were instantly cleared, buying some breathing time for the southern line and holding out until Lin Wu’s return.
Perhaps inspired by Lin Wu’s brave combat, the people at Invincible Base no longer feared the Frenzy and took up their handguns to fight them head-on. Although there were multiple injuries, they successfully blocked the breach in the northwest. Furthermore, Emerald Feather, a professional doctor, had prepared a lot of medicine in advance. Apart from not being able to eliminate infection, the injuries could be quickly treated.
Here, one must mention the Deputy Commander of Invincible Base, also known as player Peanut. Peanut possessed the Rapid Fire skill, which could increase the shooting speed by 50%. As part of Group B, after he mustered the courage to confront the Frenzy head-on, he coordinated with his comrades to kill three of the Frenzy that had breached the defense line, greatly boosting the morale of the defenders.
In the sixth minute, the number of zombies joining the battle seemed to be diminishing, and there were fewer Frenzies. Although the battle was still intense, it was significantly less suffocating compared to the first five minutes.
In the seventh minute, the scale of the zombies had decreased to a level similar to the third minute. Maya thought to herself, could it be that the last minute would only have fifteen zombies?
It seemed to be the case. In the eighth minute, zombies no longer queued up at the southern line, and the successive addition of zombies on the battlefield didn’t exert too much pressure on the defense line. It was at this time that Lin Wu, who was bending down to execute a zombie, felt a slight trembling of the ground. This reminded him of a scene he had encountered at the Blood Plague farm.
Lin Wu immediately retreated, "BOSS."
Maya did not dare to be negligent, "Retreat to the rooftop."
Groups C and D had already felt the ground shaking when they got back to the rooftop, but they hadn’t yet seen the so-called big guy. Everyone was shooting while keeping an eye on the darkness. Soon, five people on the southern line spotted the BOSS simultaneously.
This was a zombie with the stature of the Green Giant, about three meters tall and weighing nearly half a ton, with steel-like muscles and thick, visible blood vessels. Apart from the color, this creature differed from the Green Giant in another major respect—its head, which was even smaller than that of a regular zombie given its enormous body.
The people on the southern line were stunned, "Good lord." They felt a visual impact as the creature appeared, the rooftop being only three meters high, which instilled fear in everyone’s hearts.
Maya was the calmest, pulling out a display mirror to get a clear view, "Titan."
Lin Wu praised, "That name is crude and simple." He landed a shot on the head of the Titan fifteen meters away. The Titan appeared unfazed and started to run at full speed. As it ran, the earth trembled, and zombies it passed were knocked to the ground.
The Titan charged closer, having taken at least five bullets to the head without any visible injury. With an earth-shattering roar, the Titan grabbed a car blocking the small iron gate and threw it aside. Its pot-sized fists came crashing down on the system’s railing, and the mixed earth railing cracked visibly. With another smash, the entire railing collapsed.
During this time, the Titan, unphased by how many bullets it had taken, still stood tall until it led its army rushing into the base, only then did its body sway slightly. This swaying infuriated the Titan, which pounded its fists onto the parapet of the rooftop. Although the indestructible wall remained, the massive vibration caused the five people to lose their footing and fall.
One of the male players, in pursuit of shooting accuracy, had been standing at the edge of the rooftop. Shaken by the Titan’s blow, he fell off the building. The Titan grabbed the man with its left hand, binding his upper body firmly with fingers like ropes, while its right hand seized the man’s legs. With a loud shout, it tore the man in half and carelessly threw the two parts of the corpse to either side. The white glow from the body indicated the player had died, but the corpse would still remain for one minute.
The people who had been shaken to the ground stood up to witness such a gruesome scene, and they vomited in disgust. Maya grabbed Lin Wu to retreat, and another massive tremor knocked them over together. The sound of breaking glass came from below; zombies had breached the main building.
But the Titan had no intention of entering the main building. It ran around the base, and whenever it saw players, it would punch at the rooftop, causing the players to keep falling and struggle to organize a powerful line of fire.
