Chapter 828: Chapter 370: Extreme Cold (Part 2)
Lin Wu brought the pumpkin sweet soup upstairs, where the lights of the bonfire room were already on, and everyone was tidying up their bedding, preparing to add two more mahjong tables. They hadn’t set up like this before because it was too crowded, and there was always someone going out to do chores. Now the temperature confined everyone to the bonfire room, where entertainment was very limited: either play cards or read books.
Everyone could borrow a book from the library, which didn’t stock popular novels, only classics or specialized literature. Aside from Maya, who could immerse herself in a book all day, no one else could.
The card games had already been played many times, and although the stakes were always an issue, it was still better than having no entertainment at all.
The newly arranged dormitory had changed from a dartboard setup to a row of large communal beds. The size of the dorm hadn’t reduced much, as dartboards took up a lot of space. Their advantage lay in fairness, distributing the same temperature to each bed. However, with winter clothing varying in Cold Resistance Value, this was not truly fair.
Lin Wu had no complaints and he and Maya were assigned spots along the wall at the edge. Lin Meng, with the second-lowest Cold Resistance Value, was Lin Wu’s neighbor, while Shana was next to Maya.
All the hustle was to find something to do, reducing the amount of time everyone slept, as there were far too many hours to fill. As soon as Snow Egg and Little Knife, who had gone to the first floor to move tables and chairs, returned, they rushed to the bonfire to warm their hands, causing some alarm among the others: "Is it really that cold?"
Snow Egg described the chill: "It was bearable at first, but once we got to the first floor, it felt like our blood was freezing." After speaking, he touched his face and brushed off some frost bits.
Little Knife agreed, "I’m from the Ice Region, where winter temperatures can drop to minus forty degrees. This feels completely different."
Su Shi said, "Have you seen the movie ’The Day After Tomorrow’? The cold is so severe it can freeze a flag solid. I remember the movie mentioned minus one hundred degrees. If we faced a cold wave like that, we’d have to seal the only door to the bonfire room and rely solely on the fire to survive."
Lin Wu had an idea, "We could set up a movie theater. Maya and I brought back a lot of movie posters from Technology City."
Stone reminded him, "The only space left is on the rooftop and there’s just one large cell. Are you sure you can endure the cold long enough to watch an entire movie? Hey, we’ll need a set of table and chairs too."
Lin Wu said, "I’ll go, I’ll go. Have you eaten yet? Hurry up, or the food will freeze."
After half a day of mahjong, everyone was yawning. By the afternoon, even Little Knife found it dull. Everyone took a nap after an early dinner, then spent four hours at the safety house, fueled by two buckets of oil. The few dozen meters to the house was enough for everyone to feel the power of the bitter winter.
Before leaving the safety house to return to the bonfire room, Lin Wu went ahead to light the fire. Notified, everyone hurried back to the warmth, crowding around the fire and jumping to keep warm.
After lights out at ten in the evening, nobody felt sleepy, and the conversation was sparse. So, Su Shi began telling ghost stories, a traditional pastime for the dormitory. Unfortunately, Su Shi’s stories weren’t scary; they were more amusing than frightening. Amid the laughter, Maya said, "Let me share a personal supernatural experience."
Maya’s story was told in a calm manner, with straightforward descriptions, but the content was explosive. Most importantly, several people present had heard of the hauntings at Apartment 13. The supernatural events there could not be debunked by officials, leading some to suspect a government conspiracy or cover-up by the elite. With no other choice, the officials invited the respected Guards Army to solve the mysteries of Apartment 13.
What truly puzzled everyone was that after a week at Apartment 13, the Guards Army left without issuing any conclusions or reports. Their only response to the media was, "We have no capacity to draw conclusions."
The demolition of Apartment 13, three days after the Guards Army’s departure, bolstered its legendary status. Officials used explosives to take it down and buried all the debris 200 meters underground.
Maya didn’t offer any revelations; she only spoke of her personal experience. She believed a mastermind was behind the disturbances, and did not rule out the involvement of Fortress Company, as only they had the means to devise such an intricate scheme to confront the Guards Army.
Lin Wu asked, "What’s Dawn’s take on this?" He knew everything.
Maya replied, "Dawn believes the whole affair has nothing to do with human safety and won’t intervene."
Shana said, "In other words, Dawn has a definitive conclusion about Apartment 13."
Maya confirmed, "Exactly."
Little Knife, anxious, interjected, "Let’s not digress. Maya, what happened after you heard the singing on the third night?"
Maya continued, "The singing came from the end of the corridor on the 13th floor. I could see clearly with my night vision goggles. The eighteen-meter hallway was spotless. There wasn’t a soul in scan, not even a spider. About 10% of the residents were left in the building, and on that floor, there were three occupied apartments. Besides the doors to their homes, all the others were wide open, with the authorities having removed all possessions."
Why were there still 10% of the residents? They were paid off. Many online celebrities spent money to live in others’ homes in their friends’ or relatives’ names to do live mystery explorations. For a month or two, exploring the Apartment 13 building was the biggest online sensation. The bizarre deaths of several celebrities only added to the eerie atmosphere surrounding Apartment 13.
