Chapter 823: Chapter 368: Work
The next task was moving, removing all the wooden furniture, and clearing the tables first. The jeep wasn’t a pickup, so they had to disassemble the tables. Maya and Little Knife moved the tables to the main entrance, and as long as the noise outside wasn’t too loud, it wouldn’t disturb the zombies inside.
Lin Meng switched careers to carpentry, took a saw to resize the tables and chairs, and then loaded the cut pieces into the trunk of the car, which Stone transported to the base. Su Shi, with an axe in his left hand and a crowbar in his right, had been waiting early in the small square. It had been too long since the last time they welcomed the first batch of guests.
Coming back with the car were Maya and the others. Now it was time to divide into teams, Shana, Snow Egg, and Lin Wu formed one team, while at night it would be Maya, Lin Meng, and Little Knife.
After splitting into teams, Lin Wu’s trio held a brief meeting, carried a small amount of firewood by car to the office building, and lit a small bonfire in the lobby.
Lin Wu stood opposite the right corridor and flicked his slingshot, the small stone hitting the ground and bouncing into the pitch-dark corridor. Hearing something inside, Lin Wu flicked another small stone. Finally, one zombie walked out of the corridor. On both sides of the corridor, Shana and Snow Egg each took a blunt weapon and instantly killed the zombie.
Another zombie came out, first saw Lin Wu, and locked onto him, ready to run, but was killed by Shana with a blow.
Shana listened carefully to the sounds inside and gave Lin Wu a hand signal. Lin Wu coughed, and two zombies hiding by the corridor ran out; one was killed by Shana, and the other was taken down by Lin Wu with his unconventional Wind Stinger.
Shana made a tiger roaring gesture, stretching out four fingers with her hand facing Lin Wu: "Frenzy, four meters away." Then Shana rolled her eyes, stretching out three fingers palm towards Lin Wu: "Three zombies."
These zombies had been attracted by the noise earlier but hadn’t grasped the gist of the situation and were still inside the corridor.
This was the strategy Shana had devised, called "Saving Grandpa by Gourd Children." First, set an escape route. At any loud noise, they would immediately jump into the car and run away, then divide and conquer, using the sound of killing zombies to lure others. Even though it wasn’t as efficient as Maya’s group, it was safer and cost nothing.
After killing another wave, Shana changed tactics, handing the slingshot to Snow Egg. A zombie emerged from the corridor, and Lin Wu, leaning against the wall, executed it with a dagger, followed by Shana hitting Lin Wu’s hand with a stick.
Lin Wu opened his mouth wide, grabbing the zombie’s body with one hand and taking painkillers with the other, then glared angrily at Shana, who hastily made an apologetic face.
Lin Wu let go of the zombie’s body, handed the dagger to his left hand; the falling body attracting new zombies, one of them a Frenzy. To prevent it from flailing after being stabbed, Lin Wu used his injured right hand to hold its neck and delivered two blows to its head, easier than killing a chicken. Another zombie that followed the Frenzy was skull-crushed by Shana.
After an hour of assembly line work, thanks to a survival skill, Lin Wu’s hand healed, and he could no longer lure out zombies. The three took flashlights into the corridor and unexpectedly saw the Night Demon at the end of it, which immediately darted into the restroom on the left.
The right corridor had only one company, with only a restroom at the end of the corridor on the left. Lin Wu and Shana guarded the restroom door from either side, while Snow Egg continued to torment. There weren’t many zombies left in the restroom, and it didn’t take long to clean them out. Lin Wu called Wai, who had been spacing out at the main entrance, to have a chat with the Night Demon in the restroom alone, and it didn’t take long before it was handled, and he even managed to obtain a weapon design blueprint.
Wolf Fang Cub, with almost maximum damage, required materials were sticks and nails. Lin Wu originally planned to trade it with Shana, but with a glance from Shana, Lin Wu gave the blueprint to Snow Egg, who silently thanked him.
The biggest problem for Shadow was still Cold Resistance Value. Although the cold wave had not yet arrived this month, those with only 50 points of Cold Resistance Value were extremely cold. Mostly felt in the icy cold toes and numb fingers. Although system skills helped, their monster-slaying movements didn’t deform, but the discomfort in their bodies was inevitable.
Hunger and cold were humanity’s greatest enemies. Everyone else was enduring, and no one wanted to be the first to talk about their situation. Heartless Lin Wu and easygoing Maya hadn’t considered this issue until Stone could no longer endure the cold and contacted Maya. His suit had even lower cold resistance.
By this time, the first floor of the office building had been mostly cleared, Snow Egg, and Shana agreed to finish this busy period before discussing further. Busy with slaughtering zombies, cutting, and transporting, by four o’clock in the afternoon, Shadow had completely cleared the first floor of the office building. Everything movable had been moved, not sparing even the printers, wall paintings, curtains, or vases.
The good news was a significant increase in fuel. The bad news: This fuel was far less efficient than chopped wood. Shana, through comprehensive calculations, believed that the wood obtained from completely clearing the five-story office building could provide heat for eight days. Combining overall statistics and converting fuel into safe house time, without a cold wave, they should be able to last until the end of the season.
But there would definitely be a cold wave, not just any, but an ultra-low temperature of -71.2 degrees Celsius. Therefore, in addition to the five-story office building, they must also seek more fuel. Basically, all fuel was indoors, and almost every indoor environment was no different from the office building.
Shana proposed, "Let’s chop trees in the park."
Maya objected, "The park is open on all sides, not to mention the cold wind lowering the perceived temperature, how do we guard against the Night Demon?" Indoors, they could block the paths with fire or hang flashlights to stop the Night Demon from crossing.
