Chapter 820: Chapter 367 Office Building
Lin Wu was thinking about the conversation between Maya and Shana when they reunited after travelling thousands of miles home. It mentioned something about doing some useless work. As a genius in charge of logistics, Shana had only today discovered that their firewood supply was insufficient, despite the dull two winter months.
It’s likely that three out of ten incidents are a conspiracy; the two Deputy Commanders had already discussed how to keep everyone busy. Although Shadow had maintained harmony this month, signs of trouble had begun to emerge. For example, while playing billiards with Su Shi, Lin Wu inadvertently scratched his clothes on the pool table without noticing, which displeased Su Shi. Nevertheless, he restrained himself and allowed Lin Wu a few grumbles, but deep down there was some dissatisfaction. Such incidents would not have happened in the past.
Shana sat alone by the riverbank watching the ice flow. Little Knife approached with concern, but Shana brusquely responded, "Leave me alone, thanks," making Little Knife feel extremely awkward. This also would have been unimaginable before.
Besides, Snow Egg’s time spent idle and alone had begun to increase, and Stone had lost interest in boasting. It seemed that only Maya remained unaffected.
The meeting dispersed, and work began. Lin Meng set out, Lin Wu deployed Little Fight, and Shana commanded Lin Meng to place markers through the headset while looking at Lin Wu’s computer.
Halfway through, Lin Wu asked Shana if the firewood issue was a conspiracy.
Shana was caught off guard by the question, saying, "If you hadn’t mentioned it, I wouldn’t have thought about it. There’s no conspiracy. I considered checking the firewood stock, but I was too lazy to do it, preferring to sit or lie down. It’s my fault."
"It’s not entirely your fault. After all, nobody else managed to estimate the consumption," Lin Wu said. "Clearing zombies isn’t bad either; it gives everyone something to do."
Shana pondered and said, "I couldn’t have persisted this long without you guys."
Being a flower grown in a greenhouse, Shana did not like difficulties. She pursued a quality of life, but without excessive ambition. For instance, a talented person could work 12 hours a day and become an executive within a few years. But working only 7 hours a day, they might prefer to spend time on things they enjoy. If they had to choose, people like Shana would probably quit; she would not lose herself for money.
For Shana, "I" was very important – it was the meaning of this world. If the world had no "I," then it had no meaning to me.
...
The endless daylight brought boredom, but the endless night brought not only boredom but also danger.
At four in the morning, an uninvited Night Demon quietly visited the base. Unlike ordinary zombies, Night Demons had strong individual mobility and were very smart. After a few encounters with Night Demons, Lin Wu believed they were assassins sent by Dawn.
Everyone turned on the base alarms, which woke everyone from their sleep. At that time, they did not know it was a Night Demon; otherwise, they would have simply turned off the alarms, as Night Demons could not enter well-lit interiors.
Maya was the first to get up. She could have handled it alone, but lacking emotional intelligence, she did not let others rest while she handled it herself. This made everyone feel uneasy about staying put. Eventually, all except the shameless Lin Wu left their warm beds and the bonfire room.
The red dot soon left the safety zone, and Maya came back to say, "Night Demon," before returning to rest.
Everyone went back to their places. Shana said, "Is this a warning, or a hint from the system?"
Maya replied, "It’s been a month of endless daylight. They must be bursting at the seams. Danger is everywhere; just be careful. Especially don’t go out of the safety zone alone, like to go ice skating or Fishing. Don’t let go of your handgun when you go out, and look out for each other. There shouldn’t be too much trouble." The base was close by; as long as they didn’t die on the spot, they would be fine.
The endless night was like a hellish difficulty for a base without electricity supply. Imagine everyone in the bonfire room with a short supply of firewood, or needing to prepare food. What to do when multiple red dots appeared within the secure zone on the base’s electronic map? Dangerous to go out, and even at home, they were still at risk – even if they knew the Night Demon was close, they were ill-equipped to deal with it.
More extremely, a large pack of Night Demons might wait in the darkness outside the bonfire for food to leave the fire.
As the endless night swallowed the Dawn, Lin Wu almost overslept. By the time he leisurely descended the stairs, Lin Meng had almost finished preparing breakfast. Simplicity was beauty, with porridge, scrambled eggs, and a boiled egg per person. This set was not troublesome and had a high tolerance for error. The key was to add more salt to the scrambled eggs.
"Although they’re all scrambled eggs, yours just taste different, delicious," Lin Wu gave a free compliment. It was only right to say something nice when not contributing to the work.
Lin Meng smiled happily and asked, "What’s for lunch?"
"Egg soup, egg custard," Lin Wu said. "How much rice is left?"
"It’s all in the pot," Lin Meng replied. They could only grow vegetables in hydroponics.
"Steam some sweet potatoes, no seasoning needed. For dinner, we’ll boil potatoes. After a day of eggs, it’ll be nice to switch flavors."
"There are also some fish," Lin Meng reminded.
"The fish is too complicated to prepare; leave it to Shana and Little Knife to figure out."
As they were talking, another alarm rang out at the base. Lin Wu said, "I’ll handle it." He whistled, and Wai sprinted down the stairs from the warm house.
