Chapter 816: Chapter 365: Castle Defense Battle_2

Next up was a choice between three teams and picking two, and Stone vaguely sensed trouble. Logically speaking, the crowd should have eliminated the Sha Knife Team, as they spent a lot of time preparing meals every day. With Shana’s brains, if she really wanted to learn in the training room, her cooking skills would surely improve rapidly.

That meant he and Su Xue Team were competing for the last spots.

Being second to last wasn’t too bad; they only had to take care of delivering leftover meals to the ranch every day. But the last place had to dig through snow and earth to meet the food needs of dozens of chickens, which was a lot of work.

A big mistake, he should have let Maya step up, as she was the most familiar and yet the most mysterious to everyone. There might have been a chance to end up third to last.

Suddenly, the system broadcast broke in, basically stating that as of now, the number of surviving players was exactly one thousand, all of whom were one in a thousand survivors. Additionally, all bases could now open training rooms for free without taking up building slots.

Lin Meng asked, "What does the last sentence mean?"

Lin Wu replied, "Goodbye?"

"The part before that."

"Good luck everyone?"

"Even before that."

Maya said, "The system doesn’t offer hints without reason. With the boredom of winter, everyone can go to the library to read or to the training room to learn."

Seeing the atmosphere starting to shift, Shana quickly said, "Voting time has arrived, does Stone have any last words?"

Stone, frustrated and upset, retorted, "I won’t lose." That little brat just dragged me into the fire.

Shana smirked with glee.

The voting began, everyone wrote down two team names and handed them to Shana, with Lin Wu supervising Shana in the counting.

"Su Xue Group, one vote; Stone Maya Group, one vote..."

In the end, the Stone Maya Group got 6 points, the Double Lin Group got 0 points, the Sha Knife Group got 4 points, and the Su Xue Group also received 6 points.

Next was the battle for the bottom place. After half an hour of speeches, communication, and debate, Su Shi delivered a decisive blow: "Maya runs more errands, and extra work Stone will voluntarily take over, even if Stone doesn’t, we will assist Maya."

Stone hastily said, "We are a whole, don’t try to divide us."

A chorus of boos erupted, and unsurprisingly, the Stone Maya Group ended up at the bottom.

It was just an ordinary night for self-entertainment.

...

The second month of winter was a month of polar days, and the first day almost didn’t affect Shadow at all; in fact, everyone was somewhat looking forward to it. After all, experiencing polar days on Blue Star was quite expensive. Lin Wu, Maya, and Lin Meng entered the instance, tackling the offensive task: Castle Defense War.

Entering the castle instance empty-handed, they went to the armory to get weapons, which included cold weapons of both melee and ranged types. The players had to first go out of the castle to kill zombies, and killing zombies earned them military merit. After accumulating a certain amount of military merit, they could be promoted and gain access to more advanced weapons.

At the start, there were very few zombies, but as time went on, the number of zombies steadily increased.

It was an endless task; successfully defending for two hours counted as a victory, and players could leave unscathed even if they died, but they couldn’t take any extra rewards. After that, points were accrued every 5 minutes. Players could escape at any time using a zip line from the castle to the opposite cliff, ending the challenge of the instance.

Zombies only attacked the castle gate, which had a regenerative ability.

It sounded not too bad, just tiring at most—it was only two hours, and playing here without the burden of heavy winter clothes was at least a minimum comfort.

The reality was different, though. As soon as the mission started, Maya realized there were more zombies than they expected, starting with three groups of about a dozen each.

To help Lin Wu and Lin Meng, Maya delayed her promotion, and the three switched to rifles, the kind where you have to load a bullet each time you fired, seven minutes after the mission began. By then, there were already hundreds of zombies outside the castle—far beyond what rifles could handle.

Lin Wu was proficient at shooting. He was promoted to second lieutenant first, choosing two revolvers. Maya later chose to be promoted with an Enfield rifle, equipped with a 5-round magazine.

Once they had been promoted to captains and switched to automatic rifles, the zombie count had already reached over a thousand. Outside the castle, there was a dark crowd of zombies, and they began piling up two mounds of corpses, endlessly climbing like a figurine stacking game, only five meters from the castle wall. And only half an hour had passed since the task began.

Maya: "Lin Wu, take the left side, I’ll take the right, and first bring down the corpse wall. Lin Meng, guard the main gate."

Reaching above the corpse wall, Lin Wu opened fire with his gun, switching magazines one after another, his backpack, aside from reward cards, was stuffed with bullets.

Lin Meng, still a lieutenant, wielded an MP5 submachine gun. Her headshot ability wasn’t as good as Lin Ma’s, and she yelled desperately, "Only half the health left on the gate."

After breaking through the corpse wall and coming to assist, Lin Wu quickly relieved the pressure on the gate. But another wall on the left began to pile up, and from the misty outside, a relentless stream of zombies surged toward them.

"I’ll get promoted; you hold on."

Lin Wu ran to the armory and was promoted to major; he had three options: a Gatling gun, a rocket launcher, or a flamethrower. Lin Wu chose the flamethrower and ran to the gate. Upon opening, flames blasted outwards not only holding the gate but also pushing back the horde.

However, the flamethrower had a downside: after 45 seconds of continuous use, the fuel was exhausted and needed to be refilled at the armory, which took about half a minute to go back and forth. Lin Wu disappeared, closing the gate behind him.

Maya, after her promotion, chose the Gatling gun. Ten seconds of firing left no corpse wall standing. With heavy firepower from the two of them, they finally stabilized the defense line.

"Is this an offensive task? It’s clearly a defensive task."
