Chapter 810: Chapter 363: Nighttime Q&A
At five o’clock in the afternoon, the system broadcasted, "The first cold wave will hit tonight, lasting for an estimated 7 days, with the highest temperature at negative thirty degrees Celsius and the lowest at negative fifty degrees Celsius."
For Lin Wu and Maya, with their Cold Resistance Value at 90 points, this temperature was not much of a problem; the lowest temperature was slightly beyond their limit, but as long as they didn’t go out at night, it would be fine. However, for the rest of the players, who only had an average warmth value of 50, warmth could only be felt in the bonfire room.
The broadcast continued, "To assist players in resisting the severe cold, an active auction will kick off tomorrow. The system will increase the supply of ’summer cooling artifacts,’ including items such as electric fans, ice machines, and air conditioners. All players are welcome to participate in the auction."
Lin Meng speculated, "Could there be a ’Hot River era’ in summer?"
To which Lin Wu looked at her and Lin Meng explained, "If there’s an ’Ice River era’ in winter, then it must be a ’Hot River era’ in summer."
Lin Wu wasn’t one to dwell on trivial matters. If it were someone else, they would have laughed it off, but Lin Wu would ponder over such issues, especially ones related to the ominous intentions of Dawn. After some time, Lin Wu said, "I have a feeling that Dawn’s clearance sale is because there is no summer? But the game timeline spans two years without issues, starting in autumn should be fine. The absence of summer doesn’t seem logical."
It was dinnertime, complete with a lively hotpot. A casual chat between the Double Forest could only be considered a private conversation.
After dinner, it was already eight at night and, with too much time on their hands, they could only waste it on eating and drinking more. The two chefs took the dishes to be cleaned to the kitchen. As soon as Stone stepped out, he cursed at the cold wind that hit him. Maya glanced at the temperature displayed at the headquarters, which had already dropped to negative 45 degrees Celsius.
Everyone went outside to experience the cold. Little Knife looked up at the sky in the small square and wondered, "Why doesn’t it snow at negative 45 degrees?"
Shana replied from the side, "When the temperature falls below negative 40 degrees Celsius, it almost never snows. The lower the temperature, the smaller the chance." It wasn’t that snow was more likely at lower temperatures.
Su Shi said, "So it turns out, snowy days aren’t actually that cold. I wonder how long the heat from the hotpot within me can fend off this cold wave."
The cold winter had finally descended.
In the wee hours, many were awakened by the cold, only to find that the bonfire had died out and the indoor temperature was not much higher than outside. Everyone huddled in their bedding, not wanting to go out, and set their hopes on the two individuals with high cold resistance. However, Maya and Lin Wu, due to their high Cold Resistance Value, were sound asleep.
Little Knife remarked, "It would be funny if someone needed to go to the toilet right now."
Stone suggested, "Then we could have a competition to see who can hold it the longest."
Su Shi mentioned, "It looks like there are only a few sticks of firewood left by the door." The firewood was piled up at the back door on the ground floor.
Everyone sighed, and Shana said, "Let’s vote. I choose Stone."
Little Knife and the others agreed, but Stone strongly opposed, "I’ll ask a question, and if someone answers it, I’ll go. If no one can answer, I’ll be excluded. It’s not a professional question, just something about the base. Whoever gives the wrong answer is in charge of adding firewood."
"Okay."
Stone asked, "Eagle Sand is Maya’s beloved horse. Eagle Sand once had a fatal flaw. What was it?"
Lin Meng exclaimed eagerly, "I know!"
Stone, surprised, asked, "What is it?"
Lin Meng replied, "I forgot."
As everyone pondered, Stone said, "See, you don’t pay attention to your companions’ companions in your daily lives. Eagle Sand’s flaw used to be shirking work. Who’s next to ask a question?"
Shana asked, "Who among the base’s members has intentionally killed me?"
The group was startled, and Little Knife inquired, "Intentionally?"
"Yes."
"Without any reason? Like you were about to die and they were putting you out of your misery?"
"Nope, they killed me and rifled through my bag."
Little Knife couldn’t believe it, "A current member of Shadow?"
Shana confirmed, "Yes."
Silence fell; this was not a question, but an accusation. To kill one’s comrade for the sake of looting their bag was an abhorrent act. Lin Meng was the first to sense something amiss and ventured a guess, thinking that such a terrible situation could not arise amidst the harmonious base atmosphere. Only one possibility remained.
Shana warned, "Remember, if you guess wrong, you have to move the firewood."
"Okay," Lin Meng said, "Lin Wu?"
Shana was shocked, "How did you know?"
Lin Meng responded, "Not all of you were members of Shadow at that time, right?"
Shana, even more surprised, "Did he tell you?"
Lin Meng answered, "No, I guessed. The only ones asleep are them. If the person you asked about was someone else, surely someone would have been able to answer. Maya wouldn’t kill anyone who didn’t provoke her. Therefore, Lin Wu is the most likely."
Shana pondered, "That makes sense, but how did you think I wasn’t a member of Shadow at the time?"
Lin Meng explained, "Because of Stone, Uncle Stone would never tolerate someone who slaughters their own comrades staying in the community."
Stone nodded in approval, "Well said. But Shana, did Lin Wu kill you?"
Shana admitted, "Yes, and he took my Eagle Sand."
Once Eagle Sand was mentioned, everyone remembered, murmuring, "So that’s how it came about."
Lin Meng asked, "Did you join Shadow for revenge?"
Shana was on the verge of laughter, "Of course not."
Stone interjected, "Enough chatter, get to work."
"Stinky Stone," Shana gritted her teeth as she flung off her bedding, elated, "And stinky Lin Wu, stinky Lin Meng."
Lin Meng laughed, asking, "Does anyone else have a secret only they know?"
Shana hastily said, "I’ll tell you after I come back, wait for me."
...
On the third day, Shana prepared breakfast: half-cooked rice that was supposedly called porridge. Reportedly, as she cooked, the rice soup bubbled over, so Shana removed the lid, eventually boiling off the water, leaving some of the rice uncooked. Interestingly, there were even crusty rice patties at the bottom of the pot.
