Chapter 790: Chapter 356 Retirement

After exiting instance 334, Shadow Squad returned to instance 771. Maya, who was usually not one for pleasantries, surprisingly expressed gratitude to Snow Egg for holding down the fort and then began to pry up the floorboards to install mines. After setting up 20 mines indoors, Maya instructed, "Be sure to remember their locations; don’t step on them."

Laying mines was not complicated. First, they lifted the carpet and pried up the ceramic tiles. Then they chiseled into the cement with the tools they had brought and placed the mines inside. Afterward, they carefully relaid the intact or broken ceramic tiles and covered them back with the carpet before unscrewing several light bulbs in the corridor.

Some hotel corridors, especially those of guest rooms, used very thick fire-resistant carpets. These carpets were comfortable to walk on and did not betray the presence of hard objects beneath them. They were detachable and relatively easy to maintain.

However, they did not know that these mines were completely useless.

The next step was to head to the 17th floor to refresh their weapons and ammunition. After a night’s wait, the mercenaries on the 17th floor had respawned normally. Thanks to their increasingly proficient shield usage, Shadow Squad successfully harvested over a dozen assault rifles. Giving time for the 17th floor to respawn, Shadow Squad began a systematic, floor-by-floor sweep.

Having already saved 49 NPCs, the surplus NPCs had to be killed off.

The day had not been particularly smooth. Maya, Snow Egg, Little Knife, and Shana each had to bail by jumping out of the building due to injuries, whereas Lin Wu, the point man, didn’t even scratch his skin.

Feeling it was unfair to have Snow Egg guard the base alone for hours every day, Shana volunteered to take over this duty. Shana returned to the base early and was supposed to take over around eleven at night, but the alarm went off at ten.

The first message: The countdown to the zombie siege begins in five minutes.

The second message: Shadow Base hit the jackpot with Seven-Star Defense.

"Whose damn handiwork?" Lin Wu demanded.

Stone’s nonchalant whistling could be heard through the earpiece.

In Hardcore Mode, Shadow had suffered greatly during the Seven-Star Defense, losing two major players and even their base. But there was no such worry in the event instances. The electrified fence was already built, there was plenty of fuel, countless bullets, and four Auto Turrets as well as one high-level turret. Even with a base like the commercial street, which had only one open side, it was much stronger than the Sawmill with its four open sides.

Shana returned to the base early to stand guard through the night, while the others left the instance to begin preparing for the defense.

Since one side of the commercial street was completely open terrain, Maya made some arrangements for personnel deployment, and Stone was temporarily conscripted for duty. He used the Forest Wolf, a gun that did not require high accuracy, as hitting a zombie with it would create a big hole.

If Stone used the Forest Wolf, then what about Titan? Maya believed that allowing Titan to get within 3 meters during a defense in an event was a colossal failure.

Each person prepared a rifle with both 5.56 and 7.62 caliber bullets, primarily using 7.62 for its stronger lethality and to consume some of the ammunition stock. In the last two minutes, Maya once again explained to everyone how to control their fire. Simply put, when the Crosshair spread out or the shaking became severe, they should reduce their firing rate.

Just past ten o’clock, the first defense battle officially began, and the system considerately sent out an encouraging message: Each person’s zombie kills would be counted individually for points. These points were event points, not game points.

Countless zombies charged towards the electric fence...

It seemed like countless, but in reality, even the sight of a hundred-person team running together was more shocking. The zombies threw themselves against the electric fence and then went limp. Even the most Agile, such as the Frenzy, couldn’t muster the strength in their limbs, merely clawing at the fence a few times before dropping down.

Seeing this, Maya waved her hand, and the team pushed forward to the edge of the electric net, opening fire from a distance of three meters. As soon as a zombie died, it would be instantly respawned, wave after wave of attacking zombies turning into piles of dead bodies.

The Titans fared no better. Upon sighting a Titan, one would shout out, and two gunmen would come over. With three guns firing together, the Titan couldn’t even move forward.

Maya somewhat regretted not having each person carry a shotgun as well; there was no need to waste rifle bullets. Of course, she couldn’t be blamed for not being thorough, as she hadn’t known the defense divine artifact that was the electric fence would be so formidable. Within one minute into the battle, only the durability of one side of the electric net had dropped below 90%. Not to mention seven stars, even a ten-star siege would not pose much pressure.

However, the electric fence had one drawback: they couldn’t go in, and you also couldn’t go out, so there was no way to pick up any loot. The drop rate in event defense battles was much lower than that in instances, but this was offset by the large number of zombies. After the 7-minute defense ended, Maya immediately turned off the electric net, and everyone gleefully ran among a sea of cards.

...

On the morning of the fourth day of the game, Stone, with eyes looking like those of a panda from playing slot machines all night, stopped Shadow Squad, "Where to?"

Maya answered, puzzled, "The instance."

Stone asked, "What for?"

Maya looked at Stone as if he were an idiot, "To farm materials, to make money."

Stone pointed at the base, "All the facilities that needed to be built have been built. Now we have two slot machines; even if we played for 24 hours non-stop, we wouldn’t be able to finish in the time available for the event."

Stone’s words left everyone stunned; indeed, the event had lost its relevance for them.

Snow Egg suggested, "Perhaps we could farm points?" No one knew how the event points were calculated, but the system had specifically stated the day before that killing zombies during the defense would add to personal points.

After some thought, Maya said, "After we clear instance 771, we’re done." They already had everything needed, and thinking of the previous day’s injuries, Maya believed it no longer made sense to take any more risks.

Upon entering instance 771 and after waiting awhile, Lin Meng arrived. After Lin Meng returned the guns, she joined everyone for the final NPC escort mission.
