Chapter 77: Chapter 76: Meeting Danger
On the way to Highland Villa, Lin Wu completely ignored the Frenzies by the roadside. After getting out of the car, Shana took on the primary responsibility of clearing the road. The two climbed over the fence and entered Highland Villa, and the preoccupied Lin Wu actually fell carelessly. Shana reached out to pull Lin Wu up, "Are you alright?"
Lin Wu responded dispiritedly while taking out the lock picking tools to open the garage door, "If I said I’m fine, would you believe it?" He couldn’t be bothered with a zombie near the garage, luckily Shana’s Crossbow Arrow took care of the crisis.
Shana knew Lin Wu was not in the mood to play games today and considered Highland Villa to be just in easy mode, so she took him out to get some air.
There was a scrapped pickup truck in the garage, the engine was nowhere to be found, leaving only an empty shell. There were many things inside the garage, but after searching around, Shana didn’t find any valuables. She notified Lin Wu, who was on guard at the entrance, and they went down to the treehouse in the backyard.
Shana glanced at Lin Wu and it was clear that someone had no intention of moving today, so she let Lin Wu stay on guard while she snuck into the treehouse. She rummaged through the place, finding a small handgun and more than ten bullets.
"Let’s head back now."
"Mhm," Lin Wu nodded.
As they climbed over the fence, Shana started the motorcycle, never expecting that three meters away, behind a tree, a Screeching Zombie was hidden. Before Lin Wu and Shana could act, the Screeching Zombie let out a howl. Shana was about to call for Lin Wu to get on the bike when a zombie from the side lunged and grabbed onto Shana, pulling her off the motorcycle.
Shana pushed the zombie away, while Lin Wu killed the Screeching Zombie. Lin Wu said, "To the right."
Maya had specifically tested that when starting a car or motorcycle, if zombies are within five meters, the best thing to do is to immediately leave the vehicle. And if not? If it’s a car, zombies will inevitably climb on before the car can accelerate. Clinging to the car door is not too bad; at most, you will lose a car door. But if they cling to the truck bed or hood, the persistent attacks will continuously reduce the car’s durability until it finally explodes.
Despite how powerful cars seem, in Homefront, a single ordinary zombie could claw a car with 100% durability to explosion in 15 seconds, two would take just 7.5 seconds. The damage to the cars when hitting zombies varies with speed. Calculating by the speed needed to kill a zombie, every zombie killed would reduce the car’s durability by 20%.
Motorcycles are even worse; zombies would directly leap and tackle the rider and passenger. As long as players leave the car or motorcycle, zombies will not attack them. Unless it is during a siege, during which, the zombies not only target the players but also all the property of the base.
The two climbed over the fence to the right. Although there were many zombies lured over by the Screeching, they were no match for both Lin Wu and Shana once she pulled out the Sharp Blade and joined in the executions. The pair merely waited behind the fence for the zombies to climb over and chopped them down. But as they looked up awaiting new zombies, they were startled to see a Frenzy standing on top of the fence.
Disaster!
The Frenzy tackled Shana squarely, its claws sinking into her shoulder, opening its bloody maw and turning its bottom towards Lin Wu. In his panic, Lin Wu activated Wind Stinger and was knocked against a tree by one shoulder. Luckily, Shana still had the capacity to save herself, pulling out the handgun and shooting the Frenzy in the head, knocking it aside.
The two stood up just as another Frenzy approached. Lin Wu, with the Silencer, shot it in the head, knocking the Frenzy to the side again. At that moment, growls came from behind them and upon looking back, they saw another Frenzy on the roof running towards them, preparing to pounce as soon as it reached the edge.
"Climb."
Just before the two Frenzies could attack, they climbed over the fence together. And before they could run out two meters, both Frenzies had already jumped onto the fence. Lin Wu turned and shot one in the head, but to his surprise, he hit the second Frenzy, which jumped to the side and did not die. The first Frenzy was already gathering strength to pounce on the lagging Shana. Without needing Shana to say it, Lin Wu knew she wouldn’t survive this strike.
Lin Wu was holding a bolt-action rifle, loading the bolt took time, aiming took time and the Frenzy did not give him that time. In his desperation, Lin Wu used the Beast Trap skill, and the Beast Trap instantly appeared in his left hand. Confronting the Frenzy lunging towards Shana, Lin Wu threw the Beast Trap, smashing it on the Frenzy’s head. There was a snap and the Frenzy’s head was caught and exploded. Since the Beast Trap had finished its attack without catching a player or zombie, it disappeared immediately.
The second Frenzy was charging over. Lin Wu followed the same procedure, slapping a Beast Trap onto the face of the Frenzy as it leaped towards him. Another crisp snap and the Beast Trap clamped onto the Frenzy’s head. Both the Frenzy and the Beast Trap fell to the ground. After landing, the Frenzy, with a Beast Trap on its head, stood up with its speed greatly reduced, then crashed head-first into a stone, unable to find its target, stumbled a few steps, and due to the heavy head and light feet, tumbled right at Lin Wu’s feet.
Lin Wu watched the Frenzy’s performance for a while, then crouched down, steadying the Beast Trap with one hand and executing the Frenzy with the Sharp Blade in the other. When Lin Wu saw another zombie running towards him, he took out a Beast Trap with his right hand and threw it... too far away. Lin Wu hadn’t put enough strength in the throw; he could only send the three-kilogram Beast Trap about six meters.
With his left hand, he threw another Beast Trap, which hit right in the zombie’s head. Accompanied by a crisp closing sound, the Beast Trap crushed the zombie’s head and then vanished into thin air. The headless zombie still managed to run for two meters before falling to the ground.
"Looks like someone has found a new way to play with their toy."
Only then did Lin Wu remember Shana, he hurriedly went over to greet her and apologize, "I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, it was my distraction that put us in danger."
As Shana bandaged herself and took her medicine, she retorted without giving an inch, "Didn’t you preach a lot of great truths before? Today, I’m going to talk about a great truth myself. No one can have smooth sailing all the time, nor can playing games always be as one wishes. Life will inevitably bring failures, and the challenge is in accepting those failures. Some people need half a year or even years to step out of the shadow of failure, and some live in it for their whole life. On the contrary, those who live actively should be able to face failure with composure."
Imitating Lin Wu’s tone, Shana said, "Stay positive, be brave enough to challenge, pursue the truth, and realize self-fulfillment."
Lin Wu offered a conciliatory smile, "I’m sorry, I sincerely apologize. I admit it’s because the Beast Trap was less effective than my lowest expectations."
Shana asked, "I accept your apology. Can I make a request at the same time?"
Lin Wu immediately answered, "Of course."
"You must stay at the base until eight tomorrow morning, and you’re not allowed to play with the Beast Trap," Shana stated.
"That’s... pretty harsh, isn’t it?"
Shana replied, "Only in this way will you remember the lesson well. After all, we’re not partners for just a week or two; we might be partners for a year or even two. If you get discouraged every time you fail, sooner or later, we’ll die out there."
"Sister," Lin Wu said, "it’s already ingrained in me, right down to my bones."
Shana responded, "You just said of course, and now you’re trying to haggle?"
Lin Wu helplessly said, "All right then."
"Get in the car, let’s head back to the base."
Getting in the car, Lin Wu said, "Actually, there’s no need to go back so early, we..."
"Hmm?"
"Let’s just go back, let’s go back," he conceded. Men are supposed to be resolute, but it really has nothing to do with being a man. It’s about basic credibility and the spirit of contract. Don’t make a promise if you’re going to eat your words and get fat from it; not making promises you can’t keep is a basic human quality.
Lin Wu was desperately struggling, shamelessly calling her "sister," mainly because his heart was filled with endless expectations for the new use of the Beast Trap.
Lin Wu only struggled briefly because, as a reasonable person, he knew that Shana made a lot of sense. Shana had a good understanding of the male psyche: men liked to reason, and they were also easily persuaded by logic. A barbaric girlfriend was just a temporary pleasure, but a logical girl could be a true partner.
This is why many men are attracted to intelligent women. Being defeated by a woman and being defeated by logic are two different things.
