Chapter 73: Chapter 72 Olive Manor (Part 1)
Shana said, "What if I said to Lin Wu, ’Because I’m striving for The Ring of the Fortress, you have to give the task of starting the fire to me?’ Of course, I believe that if I said that, he would hand over the task to me, but it would strain our relationship. Maybe in his eyes, to befriend me, he would have to help me compete for The Ring of the Fortress, which might seem more hassle than it’s worth."
Stone said, "It’s not out of the question for him to think: ’Your points are just points, but mine aren’t?’ Would Lin Wu be that kind of person? We all know that Lin Wu wouldn’t say or do such a thing, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t think it."
When out shopping, if the salesperson is impatient and rude, Lin Wu, like many guys, wouldn’t argue with the salesperson. To avoid an argument, he might even put up with some unfair treatment. However, given a choice, don’t expect Lin Wu and the others to visit that store again.
After all, thoughts are not something one can control; whatever comes to mind is what it is. Being human means to control oneself, not to be disturbed by one’s thoughts. For instance, when you encounter an attractive girl on the street, there might be no control over what your mind thinks, but saying or doing something based on those thoughts could lead to serious consequences.
Stone watched as Lin Wu dashed past the church door onto the main road: "What’s he up to now?"
Shana replied, "I gave up guessing a long time ago; no matter what, I can’t guess right. His ideas are not only naive but also bizarre. Last night, he hid in a wardrobe, stabbed a zombie, then closed the door and then stabbed and closed again, stubbornly killing a zombie with a small dagger. His goal was supposedly to compare reaction speeds with the zombie."
Curious, Stone asked, "Did he win?"
After looking at Stone for a moment, Shana said, "Take a walk," and left with a huff!
...
By four o’clock in the afternoon, it began to rain, and the chill was distinctly felt. Stone educated everyone on some health knowledge, explaining that being cold itself doesn’t make you sick, but it can lower your immunity, which in turn can lead to illness. Recently, some thermal clothing was scavenged from the apartment building, offering no more than 20 points of warmth but better than nothing. Stone insisted that everyone put on the thermal clothing.
The current highest warmth value clothing at the base were two sets of winter clothes found in the Sentry Card tents, worth 80 warmth points and weighing 1.5 kilograms. They were not needed yet. Each person also received two sets of raincoats. The material for raincoats came from one sheet of plastic cloth, equating to 10 sheets of plastic paper, leading to 100 fragments of broken plastic. Additionally, 10 fragments of broken plastic could be combined into one piece of hard plastic. The composite directions were abundant, such as combining it with scrap iron to make insulated wire and so on.
Lin Wu did not return to the base, and Little Knife brought winter clothing and a raincoat to him. After murmuring together for a while, Lin Wu left Little Knife and returned to the base to collect a silencer, bullets, medicine, rope, and a Silencer. Stone caught up to him at the warehouse and asked, "Where are you going?"
"Secret."
"Damn!" Stone said, "It’s not even night shift yet."
"Starting early."
Stone: "What about Shana?"
"I have Little Knife, let her rest first," Lin Wu replied before disappearing at the corner.
Stone glanced at Shana beside him: "Doesn’t that sound particularly annoying?"
Shana nodded: "Yes."
Stone: "But no fault can be found."
Shana nodded again: "Yes."
...
At Olive Manor, Lin Wu and Little Knife encountered the NPC, Amanda. Lin Wu approached Amanda enthusiastically to greet her, while Amanda edged away cautiously, "You look like a bad person." Turning to Little Knife, "Warrior..."
Little Knife received the task: Escort Amanda back to Olive Manor.
Lin Wu had encountered this task before. Amanda desperately wanted to lead Lin Wu into the landmine array and the Beast Trap array, so Lin Wu killed her. Cause of death one: Amanda had a dagger. Cause of death two: Amanda made Lin Wu walk into landmines. Cause of death three: She didn’t follow Lin Wu’s arrangement to probe for mines.
Why did Lin Wu come here again today? There was only one reason: Lin Wu suddenly thought of the display mirror while dismantling a car. After getting the display mirror, he confirmed his idea that the display mirror could reveal System Items. However, it had one flaw; the display mirror could only show the names of visible System Items.
Little Knife added a condition for Lin Wu—she was the main force, and she was Big Stomach King, which increased her strength by 30%.
Little Knife and Lin Wu stood at the edge of the dangerous zone. Lin Wu pointed out: "That one, that one, that one."
Little Knife asked, "Can the Beast Traps be recycled?"
Lin Wu: "They can only be dismantled into scrap metal. Let’s go."
Little Knife lifted a bench and placed it vertically—there was no sound. Little Knife and Lin Wu stepped on the bench, walking to one end, with Amanda following on the bench as well. Lin Wu scouted once more, confirming a safe line. Little Knife lifted the bench and set it down again, this time triggering a Beast Trap Lin Wu had not discovered. The Beast Trap bit one leg of the bench clean off. It was a triple-seat bench, and the one in the middle broke; it wasn’t a big issue.
The third and fourth times were precisely placed, but the fifth attempt went awry, triggering a landmine that blew the bench in two. No problem, Little Knife first placed one half, then went to one end of the bench and lifted the other half into place. With every step, Lin Wu had to search for the location of landmines and Beast Traps. Relying on the two halves of the bench, the trio slowly made their way to the edge of the dangerous zone. The last step’s two deeply buried landmines blew the two halves of the bench into pieces.
That’s when Little Knife thought of a problem: "How do we get back?"
Lin Wu thought for a long time: "There must be a road when the car comes to the mountain."
Little Knife laughed: "So you haven’t really thought about it, right?"
Lin Wu smiled embarrassedly and leaped past the last two meters of the dangerous zone, arriving at the main entrance of Olive Manor. Inside Olive Manor, there were no zombies in sight, but they could hear the deep roar of Frenzy. Lin Wu asked Little Knife to wait and pulled out Sharp Blade to push open the large iron gate and sneak in. It felt like something was missing all day without seeing Frenzy. Soon, a miserable scream echoed from the middle of the courtyard.
The trio entered the main building of the manor, and under Amanda’s guidance, they reached the entrance to the secret passageway and used the key to open it. At this point, Amanda made a new request. She said there was plenty of food inside the passageway, but what was lacking was clean water. She pleaded for them to help resolve this issue.
They descended a straight stairway into the passageway, and not far from the entrance, there was a well. The well was so deep its bottom couldn’t be seen. The rope Amanda used for drawing water had broken, and the bucket had fallen into the well. The task required players to enter the well, retrieve the water bucket, and find a new rope within the manor to help Amanda repair the water-drawing tools.
The disgusting part of the task was the lack of prior hints, and even more so was that a spare bucket couldn’t be found anywhere in the manor, forcing players to descend into the well to fetch the water bucket. Lin Wu considered that since Dawn’s task was shameless, he would always bring a rope with him when going out. Dawn had anticipated his bringing a rope, so the task focus was switched to the bucket.
Lin Wu stopped Little Knife, who was about to crawl into the well, saying, "Amanda, let’s be clear, you have to tell us what the reward is first. If the reward doesn’t satisfy us, we won’t risk it." He didn’t exclude the possibility of throwing her directly into the well.
Amanda seemed to sense Lin Wu’s malicious intent and replied, "The reward is a Skill Book tailored for heroes."
Lin Wu held up two fingers: "Two books."
Amanda answered seriously: "One book."
Little Knife: "Let’s meet halfway, one and a half books."
For a moment, Lin Wu’s mind was not sharp enough; how was one and a half calculated—rounded up, or some other way?
Amanda answered earnestly: "One book."
"Deal," Little Knife quickly replied and was about to crawl into the well again but was stopped by Lin Wu once more.
Lin Wu took out a rope and tied it around his waist: "I have no strength; I can’t pull you up."
