Chapter 726: Chapter 341 Uninvited Guest
After a brief rest, Lin Wu took over the pickup truck to handle what he claimed was the most dangerous part of the driving: "Old man, there’s something that I’m not sure whether I should bring up or not."
"You shouldn’t bring it up. Kid, you never learn anything good, just this nonsense," Stone said, leaning back in the chair and resting with his eyes closed. "When I was the boss, anyone who talked like that would be fired on the spot, hands down. They’re all troublemakers."
Lin Wu said, "It’s about you, though."
"Then shut it, you just want to make me uncomfortable. If it were something good, there wouldn’t be the question of whether it should be said or not."
"Old Fox," Lin Wu asked, "just out of curiosity, if Maya and Shana were to argue, would you take sides?" Lin Wu was trying to lighten Stone’s depleted spirits with conversation.
"No, they won’t have conflicts that can’t be resolved."
"Why not?" Lin Wu asked curiously.
"Because Maya radiates ten times the rigid hormones you do, no girl can resist that sort of aura."
Lin Wu asked angrily, "Can we have a normal conversation?"
"There’s no need to talk; I just need to rest a bit," Stone said. "These few kilometers have exhausted all my wisdom. Are we there yet?"
"We’re here, but where is everyone?" Lin Wu parked the car near the tent site, got out with Stone, looked around, and saw no people, nor any zombies. If there were zombies, it would mean Dashuang and Su Shi might have been eaten; but no zombies and no people, what did that mean?
The view was clear, and nothing was obscured. Stone walked to the edge of the cliff and looked down. The sea waves hit the rocks below, and he saw no sign of humans. Lin Wu searched inside the crevice but found no movement either.
With no other options, Lin Wu released the Little Fight drone with only 7% of its battery remaining. As soon as it took off, it detected a red dot below the crevice, a spot Lin Wu had not seen because it was not within his field of vision.
Lin Wu shouted toward the area below the crevice, "Is anyone there?"
Although the sea water constantly flowed into the Inland Sea Lake within the crevice, it couldn’t drown out the sound coming from about ten meters above. Su Shi climbed to the edge of the lake and looked up, saying, "Yes."
"What’s going on?" Stone asked, "Where’s Dashuang?"
"Dead."
"Fuck!" Stone was somewhat dazed. "What the hell, suddenly we’re down two people." The Shadow team altogether had only four and a half people. But first, they had to pull up the half-person below.
Lin Wu took out a rope he carried with him, secured it to a large rock nearby, and then climbed down: "Old Su, how are you doing?"
"Broken bones; my left leg has lost mobility."
"Minor issue." Lin Wu secured Su Shi with the rope firmly.
During this process, Lin Wu also learned about the specifics: it was all the fault of the seagulls.
After the tent was packed up, Dashuang and Su Shi had nothing to do. They rarely talked to each other, and now the silence was even more awkward. In fact, apart from Stone, Su Shi didn’t interact much with anyone else. Partly because he usually worked in the workshop, and partly because he never went on missions with others, so he had less chance to talk, and the topics were limited as well.
So Su Shi went to the edge of the cliff to look at the sea, while Dashuang took out some food to lure seagulls, just like they used to do at the Doomsday Fortress. Su Shi turned around and saw Dashuang was more than ten meters away from the crevice. He thought about warning her, but then he thought it might seem like a senior correcting a junior’s actions, which seemed a bit condescending, so he didn’t say anything.
After hearing a scream, he turned around and didn’t see Dashuang, so he immediately ran to the crevice, and indeed, saw Dashuang lying on a big rock. With all her strength, Dashuang told Su Shi that there was a 10-minute countdown for medical aid. If she wasn’t rescued in 10 minutes, she would die. Su Shi asked if a bandage would help, but she didn’t answer; she had fallen into a coma.
It was later found out through a complaint that Dashuang should have died on the spot, but the player protection mechanism allowed her a 10-minute medical rescue window.
Unable to contact the others, Su Shi was in a situation where his calls for help were unanswered by both heaven and earth. The Shadow had never encountered an urgent medical rescue before, and Su Shi couldn’t be sure if a bandage qualified as medical aid. At any rate, he couldn’t just do nothing.
As an internal affairs officer, Su Shi didn’t have the good habit of carrying a rope, so he used the vines of a tree near the crevice to climb down. He was quite agile, definitely more so than Stone, and quickly reached a point seven meters above the ground. The vine had run out, and Su Shi let go and broke his leg.
Su Shi crawled to Dashuang’s side, used a high-grade bandage he had on him, but it had no effect. Dashuang died five minutes before Lin Wu and Stone arrived. In fact, even if Lin Wu and Stone had arrived in time, they couldn’t have saved Dashuang, because emergency rescue meant getting the comatose person to a medical room’s bed.
After securing Su Shi, Lin Wu climbed back up the rope, returning to the edge of the crevice, and with Stone’s help, they pulled Su Shi up from below. Then the two of them lifted Su Shi and placed him in the back of the pickup truck.
Lin Wu relayed the situation here to Maya through his headset. Maya immediately stopped the scavenging activity with Shana, retreated to the base’s safe zone, and listened attentively to Lin Wu’s narrative with Shana.
For Shadow, the death of Dashuang was a huge blow. Not because of the value of Dashuang or Cotton, but because the base was short-staffed. What Dashuang and Cotton could do, ordinary players could do too, but the problem was that it was now very difficult to find ordinary players.
Lin Wu hadn’t heard a response from Shana and Maya for a long while and attempted to offer some comfort: "Maybe Cotton will come back for another visit, right?"
