Chapter 721: Chapter 339: Occupation

In the early morning, after breakfast, everyone joined Maya’s team. Stone wasn’t allowed to lead the group because there was a serious distrust in his combat abilities, given that he was over 35 years old.

The pickup truck could only carry five people. After entrusting Wai to Su Shi, Lin Wu ran to the ramp. By the time he arrived at the ramp, Dashuang happened to have driven back. To conserve gasoline, Dashuang had only driven a short distance, just enough to ensure the license plate could deceive the monitoring system.

Dashuang got out, the other five got in, and Stone drove the pickup truck, easily bypassing the zombies on the road. The smoothness and speed of his driving couldn’t be compared to Dashuang’s.

The town wasn’t large, and in a few minutes, the car arrived at the crossroads where the number of zombies increased significantly. However, in the middle of the road, zombies were scarce; it was unusual for the inside of buildings to be densely packed with zombies. One explanation: this was the NPCs’ necessary route to the airport, and the zombies on the road had been run over and killed. Another explanation: people were hiding in buildings from the rain when the virus outbreak occurred. And the high-end theory involved either the ultrasonic zombie attractor or the ultrasonic zombie exorcisor.

Why ultrasonic? Generally speaking, blaming ultrasonic waves is not a problem because at the end of the day, if you can’t hear it, you can’t blame it.

At the top of the intersection marked by the character "dry," one could clearly see the highway bridge, which, like the ramp, had an automatic barrier system, but was also equipped with an infrared system and had no way around from the left or right.

"Prepare for combat."

Leaving the road, the truck turned right into an area that was 30 meters wide and 80 meters long, which could be called a small square or a parking lot. The truck stopped 20 meters away from the commercial street buildings. They got out, exterminated the surrounding zombies, and cleared a safe zone.

The commercial street was a standalone elongated building with no structures to its right except the embankment, leading all the way to the highway bridge. A hundred meters to the left of the commercial street was a row of low-rise buildings, which, judging from the signs, were all restaurants.

As there were no mutant zombies and the density was not too high, the battle to establish the safe zone was relatively easy. After the fight, everyone gathered at the front of the car for a temporary meeting to determine the specific combat strategy. During this process, everyone had a bad feeling, with the zombie density inside the mall being five times that of the small square, or even more.

In the center of the mall was a large staircase leading to the second floor, with shops along the street on either side of the staircase. To the left and right of the first-floor staircase were corridors leading to the interior of the first floor. It could be seen that to the left of the staircase was an elongated clinic, roughly estimated to be around 15 square meters, crammed with over twenty zombies.

The clinic had a back door, and it could be seen that the corridor behind the back door was filled with many, many zombies.

Maya said, "Those with silenced 90 weapons, raise your hands."

Lin Wu, Shana, and Cotton raised their hands. Shana had the Continuous Silencer that Lin Wu had brought back, Lin Wu was using the Silencer that Stone had taken from Shadow, and Cotton was holding a very beautiful silenced pistol.

Maya took the Continuous Silencer from Shana and said to Lin Wu, "You clear the zombies in the clinic, I’ll take care of the zombies in the burger place next door. Cotton is responsible for cleaning up the remaining zombies." After all, it’s a shop and not everything is in plain sight. After taking down the main force of zombies, it’ll be Cotton’s job to enter the shops for cleanup. What if Cotton attracts zombies? No problem, just pull them out.

What followed was like shooting at targets, one shot per zombie; the pair killed most of the zombies inside the two shops. Cotton, guns in hand, entered the clinic. As a police officer, her regular training included indoor combat, and Maya’s arrangement played to her strengths.

With Cotton coming out of the burger shop, all the zombies in the two shops were dealt with. This method was efficient and safe, of course, but it also burned through ammo quickly—the two shops together used up 40 rounds of .22 bullets and 10 pistol rounds. In the defense of Qixing months ago, Lin Wu had taken most of the .22 bullets and his death had led to a scarcity of .22 bullets at the base.

There were still over two hundred rounds for the assault rifles, but once they fired, zombies from the office buildings across the street and the surrounding wilderness would swarm in.

At the end of the day, in the Apocalypse Era, melee weapons are the core. Bullets will expire, but anyone can make a stone axe.

Of course, Maya was aware of the ammo shortage. The purpose of clearing the two shops on the left was to establish another safe zone. Next, it would be Lin Wu’s job to draw out the zombies while the others were responsible for intercepting them. In Hardcore Mode, zombies had strong running and impact abilities, which also meant they could easily be drawn away from their horde. Admittedly, some zombies could howl, but if reinforcements arrived at the location of their cries without spotting any players, they would disperse on their own. Thus, the person drawing the zombies had to run faster than the zombies, and quite a bit faster at that, clearly making Lin Wu the best candidate.

Lin Wu was not adept at head-on combat; his Sharp Blade and blunt weapons had no skills. They only swung faster with the boost from Agility, but that was far less effective than Maya’s swordsmanship.

Wave after wave of internal zombies were drawn out of the clinic; it was an endless process, much like the relationships between scumbag men and ex-girlfriends, or harlots and their first loves.

Beyond dragging the zombies from the back corridors of the shops, Lin Wu also drew zombies from behind other shops. This demonstrated Lin Wu’s rich combat experience as he was able to roughly control the number of zombies he drew out. If there were too many zombies, he’d run faster to shake some off. If there were too few, he’d use his slingshot to beckon a few zombies from the road to follow him.

Running to drag zombies was tiring, but those hacking at them also had their hands full. The zombies’ impact force still caused quite a bit of trouble for the players. After a few waves, some were injured, and unluckily, Stone got infected. Even so, Maya did not order a break. In fact, after someone got infected, not only could they not stop, but they had to work even more efficiently.
