Chapter 708: Chapter 333: Test Subject_3
This isn’t groundless worry, at Shuixi Middle School Lin Ma had witnessed unmanned drone swarms protecting the airport and driverless pocket tanks. They also had to consider whether the experimental human NPCs on the ground possessed combat abilities, whether the Hope was armed, and whether its crew was armed.
Maya went alone to the U-shaped highway and climbed up a signal tower, where she silently observed zombies and NPCs through binoculars. The zombies and NPCs showed no sign of understanding, but Maya in turn spotted a twin-propeller fixed-wing aircraft flying in from above the sea. After the aircraft landed, it rolled into Hangar One, and before long, the pilot left the hangar.
Maya thus confirmed that this aircraft was operable. Moreover, about ten minutes later, two NPCs dressed like ground crew drove a fuel tanker into the hangar.
Maya contacted Lin Wu through the earpiece, and he, who was napping, asked, "Is there a chance?"
Maya said, "There’s an automated Sentry Card on the highway bridge that requires an identity check. Besides that, I didn’t find any other security systems."
Lin Wu said, "Test people driving won’t attract zombies, but you driving will." The sound of the car would draw the zombies, but zombies attacked cars not because of the sound, but because there were humans inside. As long as humans left the car, the zombies would give up their attack on the vehicle.
Lin Wu said, "You could try anyway, since there’s time, and we don’t care about the 24 hours for resurrection. Personally, I suggest we should establish a base in the town and proceed with steady infiltration and occupation."
Maya asked, "Remember the base switching event?"
"Mhm."
Maya said, "Back then, we found a commercial district base. Now I see a place that looks like a commercial district; it could be a base recommended by the system. The commercial district is backed by a river, two hundred meters away from the highway bridge, on the edge of the core area. I’ve been watching for over an hour, and there are a total of five NPCs, who go directly between the villas and the airport via the highway bridge. No one goes to the commercial district."
Lin Wu was familiar with the commercial district base; they had discussed it before when targeting it. The commercial district resembled a long two-story market more than a street. The first floor had various shops, from clinics to gyms, with each shop as a small cube. The second floor housed clothing and electronic stores, with spacious areas, several small cubes, and two large ones. The rooftop had large outdoor cubes and served as a natural observation post.
However, the commercial district’s defense capabilities were not strong. For one, the long facade of the base faced an open parking lot with no natural advantages. Secondly, the first floor had two back exits, susceptible to zombie infiltration.
Maya noted the river at the back, which addressed the second issue. But the first issue was hard to resolve—without fences or barriers, it was difficult to fend off a frontal assault by a zombie tide. The advantage was that each shop came with corresponding bonuses. Establishing wards in clinics not only sped up recovery but also randomly generated pills or herbal medicine each day. Using the gym provided more attribute experience than a standard gym. Additionally, there was a bookstore on the first floor and a movie theater on the second.
Overall, it was a place where everyone could live comfortably. And being an indoor building, they could still carry on comfortably indoors even during inclement weather like heavy rain.
After a while, Lin Wu said, "There are only three quarters left until the game ends, and who knows what wild card Dawn will pull. Doomsday Fortress not only has defense capabilities, with a river on one side and sea on the other, resources are relatively abundant." Although it was ugly, and although moving between floors required climbing straight ladders, and even though most of the base was open-air construction, the defense was indeed strong.
"All right," Lin Wu replied, having convinced Maya. Maya said, "I’ll go back once I’ve finished the map."
