Chapter 706: Chapter 333: Experimental Person

While they were talking, a creature stepped out of a villa next to the jeep. Lin Ma jumped back in shock upon recognizing it was a human NPC. He was dressed in a black combat uniform adorned with the Fortress logo and wore a grey cloak on the outside. Standing next to the zombies, he turned back to ensure his iron gate was shut, pulled open the car door, got in, and drove away.

Another complaint to be filed.

To this issue, Little White Rabbit replied, "Please explore on your own."

Faced with Little White Rabbit’s firm answer, Maya began to reason, "The town is inhabited by NPCs and zombies, and zombies don’t attack NPCs. My first thought was Concealment Medicine, but its effect lasts for only a minute, and it causes loss of bodily control."

Lin Wu asked, "Why don’t zombies bite other zombies?"

"Hmm?"

Lin Wu: "Do you think zombies perceive NPCs as their own kind?"

Maya continued the train of thought, "Fortress must possess some kind of medication or technology that allows humans to coexist with zombies. Then, there’s no need to relocate humans to Blue Star."

Lin Wu quickly said, "This is a game, Blue Star is history."

Maya disagreed, "I believe Dawn wouldn’t make up important things. Is there another possibility, that the zombies here don’t attack humans?"

Lin Wu said, "Maya, we see the same thing but think entirely differently. Haven’t you noticed? This place is only 250 kilometers from Left County, a little over two hours by car. Look how well-off these NPCs are living; the area must have an abundance of resources. Logically, where there’s a large number of NPCs living, there shouldn’t be any decay. Otherwise, you’d go for a cup of coffee and end up with a mouthful of trash ash."

Lin Wu further said, "This is a resource depot."

Maya did not respond as she was thinking of something else, "I don’t understand, why haven’t they noticed the destruction of the fortress’s artillery?"

Lin Wu said, "The artillery is not networked, it’s an isolated system. I don’t know, I’m guessing. What’s your plan?"

Maya said, "A lone car likely belongs to someone important. We need to ascertain whether the zombies won’t attack humans or just won’t attack NPCs. To confirm this, we should sneak into his house, where I believe we can find some traces." After all, this is a game.

Lin Wu, with a gamer’s spirit, said, "I think we should focus on why a town like this would be set up in the game."

"An airplane?"

This woman could also have moments of intelligence blackout, fixating solely on the plane. Lin Wu, less driven by curiosity, thought to simply take Highway 99, spend two days destroying the artillery, and hurry back to Shadow. Lin Wu didn’t oppose her mainly because he wanted to accommodate Maya’s curiosity, and secondly, Lin Wu thought that in the hardcore era of global decay, Leimeng Town might become an excellent source of supplies for players.

Because of the second reason, Lin Wu was also keen to find out what was going on in the town.

...

After securing the ropes, the two rappelled down into the backyard of villa number 20. The owner of the villa was the NPC with the jeep.

Lin Wu was about to take out a zombie 7 meters away when Maya grabbed him and whispered in his ear, "The zombies are also part of their security measures." Living here every day, the absence of a zombie might raise their suspicion.

The backyard fence was two meters high. They jumped up, clambered over the wall, and flipped into the backyard. The villa was not large, with a small patch of grass in the front and an equally small backyard. The main building had a width of no more than three meters on each side. There were no zombies in the backyard, but it was planted with many beautiful flowers that Lin Ma couldn’t name.

The back door of the Villa was unlocked, secured with a latch, a device designed to deter zombies rather than humans.

The two-story villa was not overly large, the main building spanned less than eighty square meters. The first floor contained a dining room, living room, bathroom, and kitchen. Going up the staircase to the second floor, they found a long corridor with three rooms on the right: a study, a bedroom, and an exercise room. The exercise room had a ping pong table against the wall, and the windows were covered with tightly drawn black curtains.

Lin Wu felt along the door frame and turned on the lights in the room; he and Lin Ma looked at each other: there was electricity.

All the rooms, including those on the first floor, had their windows latched, and the windows were not made of glass but of transparent, thickened acrylic, which gave off a cheap plastic feel although it was more expensive than ordinary glass.

Lin Wu stood outside the study, reading aloud the rules posted on the door: "One, avoid making loud noises as much as possible to prevent alarming the zombies. Two, when home, keep the main door open to prevent zombies from causing random damage to the building as they search for the source of any noises they hear. Three, ensure curtains are tightly drawn before turning on lights at night. Four, no visiting other homes. Five, do not attack zombies without cause; even if a zombie invades your home, gently and politely see it out. Six, do not feed zombies, do not talk to them, and certainly have no other interactions with them."

During this time, Maya found many clues and after organizing them, she had a basic understanding of the situation in Leimeng Town.

After the appearance of virus infection in Future City, Fortress Company immediately initiated an emergency plan.

In response to the apocalyptic crisis, mainly the global nuclear threat, Fortress Company launched the Ark Project and built underground shelters in ten towns. The shelter in Leimeng Town was located 80 meters underground, right beneath the airport.

The initial purpose of the Leimeng shelter was for the continuation of humanity, but the nuclear crisis did not happen; instead, the zombie virus emerged. Thus the Leimeng shelter became the most important virus research facility for Fortress Company. However, the situation turned out worse than they expected. Soon after the shelter became operational, many people, including soldiers, were infected with the virus.
