Chapter 696: Chapter 328 Landfill_3

Lin Wu asked, "Will I get smashed into a pulp?"

Using binoculars, Maya observed the range of hills which were almost devoid of trees, exposing huge rocks with slopes nearly vertical. Maya answered honestly, "You will."

Lin Wu asked, "What about the backup plan?"

Maya said, "Circle back to the east side of Fantasy City, build a sea-bound sailboat, travel from the river to the sea, and then by sea to the coastal highway."

"A big project."

"Indeed." But the step of circling back to Fantasy City was something that neither she nor Lin Wu could accept. For nearly half a month, the two had encountered countless difficulties and dangers, and had supported each other to get to this point.

Maya said, "The last resort, let’s just run with it." Treat this road as if it were Highway 99—it was the only viable plan. Therefore, whether this road was Highway 99 or not, Lin Ma had to follow it.

"Let’s do it!"

To start, they scavenged the garbage pile with pickaxes to dig for building materials. The chances of finding stone were not high, but there was a small chance to obtain scrap iron. Such physically demanding work was of course left to Maya, a man’s job to expand territories. Lin Wu took Wai and approached the oil refinery from the side.

Lin Wu took a running leap over the two-and-a-half-meter fence and peered inside, his view filled with swarms of zombies and a car parked a hundred meters away. Just looking was enough—if they risked their lives to get to the car only to find it was a scrapped vehicle, they’d be the laughingstock. And even if it wasn’t a scrapped car, if the fuel tank was empty, it would be torture.

Lin Wu let go and landed with a light sigh, sometimes imagining himself in the scene. Humans, having lost their homes, could only sneak peeks over the fence, a thought that felt bleak indeed. Humans could only be destroyed by humans; they deserved it.

A flash of light caught his eye, and Lin Wu saw Maya waving a kitchen knife in his hand, immediately going over to inspect it: "Where did this come from?" A kitchen knife with full durability.

"Dug it up."

Lin Wu paused for a few seconds, then hurriedly said, "No, no, no. Why would you dig up a kitchen knife?"

Finding a kitchen knife in the garbage indicated that there were more system items hidden within the pile. Out of necessity, the physically weaker Lin Wu began to move garbage by hand. After ten minutes of hard labor, he started to slack off, but then he discovered a divine artifact: a bottle of painkillers. A full bottle, with fifty tablets inside.

As he held the painkillers in his palm, Lin Wu felt as though he were back with Shadow, back in the days when painkillers were eaten like snacks. What kind of people were these? Medical waste thrown amongst construction debris—the moral standards of some humans on Earth were concerning.

Then Maya found a building material pack and a bucket of gasoline. Lin Wu did not consider this good news because it meant Maya was determined to turn the construction waste site upside down.

"A safe."

Lin Wu called Maya over, and upon seeing the intact safe, Maya began to calculate. She had 5 pieces of scrap iron on hand, dismantling the kitchen knife would yield 10 pieces of scrap iron, and by breaking down the two low durability machetes given by Lin Meng, they could amass 30 pieces of scrap iron, just enough to make a pry bar for breaking and entering.

Once decided, they didn’t hesitate. Soon, Maya came out of the tent with the pry bar and began to break into the safe. Intact items indicated that they were system items, not subject to corrosion, unlike a scrapped car, for instance. A single swipe with the pry bar sent out five pieces of scrap iron. A second strike yielded a piece of iron. Before long, Lin Wu had a pry bar in hand, and together with Maya, they set about dismantling the safe.

Breaking into a safe is different from picking its lock. Items inside a safe broken open through brute force would turn to dust, but they needed the iron regardless.

"If there really was a World of Zombies, I estimate over half of humanity would end up in coal mines and mineral caves," Maya said. "Metal represents weapons, and weapons represent power."

"I disagree with your point of view. Who would be afraid of whom in an apocalypse? I certainly wouldn’t work myself to death for a warlord’s gain. If he tried to enslave me, I’d find an opportunity to take him out," Lin Wu retorted.

After a moment, Maya said, "You’re right. Without parents, spouses, or children, one can’t effectively control slaves. So start by farming, encourage you to marry and have children, then they’ll capture you or your kids for the coal mines."

Lin Wu exclaimed, "Your conscience is black!"

"But metal is shiny, and it can be the light in the hands of an ambitious person."
