Chapter 685: Chapter 324 Defense II
While eating instant noodles, Maya asked about the transportation situation for special agents.
Lin Meng explained, "Every city, whether it’s a county or a large city, has a Fortress airport. We use points to buy plane tickets, and we can take a plane to any city from the airport. However, tickets are exclusive to special agents. You can’t use them, otherwise I could help you buy two; they don’t cost many points."
The majority of the agents’ points are spent on ammunition due to their high usage rates. Food is another big expense; they can buy high-quality cuisine. For them, gasoline is also considered a rather luxurious commodity.
Lin Wu: "Could you give us a lift tomorrow?"
Lin Meng: "I can take you, but which road will you take? There’s a road collapse ahead on Route 88, cars can’t get through. If you take the county road, I can’t guarantee a safe arrival at Fantasy City; I’ve never been to Fantasy City. In fact, I haven’t entered North City."
North City is vast and densely populated with zombies. If one doesn’t take Route 88, one must go through the urban area. Round City Road is pretty much the only choice, but it’s littered with abandoned cars, which means you often can’t speed up, and there’s always the risk of being surrounded. Another option is to go through the sewer system, but considering the size of Left County and North City, even without getting lost, it would take several days to get out.
Safety first, Maya said, "We’ll continue on Route 88 then. According to the road signs, Fantasy City is just 300 kilometers away." In nearly three weeks, Lin Ma had already covered half the distance.
Lin Meng nodded: "Tomorrow, I’ll take you to the collapse site."
Lin Wu said, "Hey, just muddling through isn’t a solution, your safe house is as good as not having one at all."
Lin Meng disagreed: "This is my home, the home in the game. I will keep going."
Maya said, "We’re not in a rush; we could try helping you with the second defense mission."
Lin Wu was startled, "Is that even possible?" That girl has hardly any points left, helping her with the defense mission means paying for the bullets ourselves.
"Of course." Lin Meng said excitedly, "Ordinary players can help us with missions."
Maya asked, "What’s the second defense mission?"
Lin Meng replied, "I’m not sure, they only gave a mission location. Once we reach the mission site, the second defense mission will start, and the system will give us a few minutes to prepare."
Maya: "Which location?"
Lin Meng checked the system mission description and said, "The road, about two kilometers from us, a small country lane."
"How do we defend that?" There’s no geographical advantage.
Lin Meng wasn’t bothered: "We’ll check it out tomorrow. If we can hold it, we’ll hold it; if we can’t, then I’ll just die."
Having said that, Lin Meng remembered something and looked at Lin Wu, "I don’t mean to doubt your morals, you know? If I can, please don’t steal my stuff after I die."
Lin Wu disdainfully replied, "Little girl, look at the gear we have on, what of your stuff would we even want?"
Lin Meng glanced at Lin Wu and muttered, "You even took my jacket."
Lin Wu took out the jacket from the backpack and threw it back to Lin Meng: "Here, it’s yours."
Maya changed the subject: "After we finish eating, let’s check our weapons and equipment. We’ll head to the lane by two in the afternoon tomorrow." By two o’clock in the afternoon, Lin Wu’s Little Fight could be reloaded with two rocket rounds.
After dinner, Maya and Lin Meng went to the safe house to check the bullets. Half an hour later, Maya came back while Lin Wu was drinking tea. He gestured for Maya to sit and asked, "Why do you want to help her?"
Maya replied, "Someone who can strive to live in conditions of material scarcity and without hope must have a positive attitude toward life. I think it’s not just me; you would also be willing to help her once."
Lin Wu said, "No, no, I would help if she asked me to. If she doesn’t ask, I won’t offer."
Maya: "That’s why I’m speaking up."
"Ha, what a funny joke. Do you have a fondness for her?"
Maya did not deny it, "I admire her. She maintains her self in a resource-scarce, hopeless environment. Have you seen her notebook? She never thought of giving up, never thought of buying a ticket and huddling with other special agents. What she considers is how to survive with limited resources, and how to live even better. As a special agent, her survival time doesn’t depend on points."
Lin Wu: "She doesn’t have the ability to do missions on her own."
"Yes, what I admire is her persistence and optimistic attitude toward life," not her ability.
"Fine, you win."
"What about you?"
Lin Wu pointed to himself, "Me? I didn’t expect to scare her like that. I’ll help if I can; helping her overcome some childhood traumas would be a good deed."
Maya stood up, "While it’s still not nightfall, I’ll go check out the defense location. I don’t believe Dawn would expect Lin Meng to defend an entire road."
Lin Wu asked, "Should I come along?"
Maya replied, "If you wanted to come, you would have stood up to ask that."
Since that was the case, Lin Wu cheerfully said, "Take care on the road, goodbye."
...
The dormitory tent had a total area of roughly sixteen square meters, with each of the two occupants having eight square meters to themselves. The dorm had no beds, just layers of items spread on the floor. First was a red carpet that covered the entire dorm, very soft, where one could lie directly. On top of the carpet lay a light green blanket measuring two meters in length and one and a half meters in width, followed by a similarly sized mat, and lastly, a quilt. Without a specific Cold Resistance Value in Hardcore Mode, Lin Wu was confident that as long as he stayed under the covers, no matter how cold it got outside, he wouldn’t freeze to death.
The dorm’s exterior walls were made of very light board material, which, after system enhancement, had exceptional soundproofing. There was also a partition between cots, and Lin Wu, disliking the dorm’s open design, had replaced the absent door with a thick curtain that couldn’t be locked. Blunderers could easily burst into the dorm.
