Chapter 68 - 67 Little Base
Chapter 68: Chapter 67 Little Base
Lin Wu reached out, grabbed Shana by the collar, and dragged her into the room, "Building materials in the warehouse."
Inside the safety zone, stamina bars recovered at double the rate. Lin Wu continuously killed two zombies in the hallway, feeling his gun skill was now god-like. At that moment, the zombies that entered the safety zone via the stairs slowed down, not having heard any sounds from within the zone, they lingered around the staircase where the Screeching Zombie had let out its last roar.
After Shana stored the building materials, she came out to stand side by side with Lin Wu, firing the composite crossbow at the zombies near the stairs, "Hey, if I die, remember to take this composite crossbow." She kept her voice as low as possible.
"You won’t die," responded Lin Wu, who was also busy killing zombies. It wasn’t that he was that precise, but the staircase was packed with zombies. As long as the height of his aim was accurate, almost every shot was a headshot. Seeing Shana’s puzzled look, he said, "Can’t you see for yourself?"
"I did, 85%."
Lin Wu said somewhat helplessly, "Look at the base information." Dumb spelled with a single word.
Shana checked the base information and was surprised to discover that Base 01 was building a medical room. "Where did you get the medical bag?" she asked in astonishment.
Lin Wu replied, "Didn’t we just take cover inside the small clinic?"
Shana understood, glancing at Lin Wu, "Your ability to adapt to situations is very strong."
Lin Wu retorted, "Hasn’t it always been? How are your injuries?"
Shana read the data, "31 points of maximum health, three fractures, two external injuries, one of them a serious fracture."
Lin Wu couldn’t help but want to laugh, "Hit by a zombie?"
Shana also wanted to smile, "Yes. It’s estimated to take two and a half hours to heal." Once in the medical bed, the system would first treat external injuries, fractures, poisonings, illnesses, etc. Only after the injuries were healed would it reduce infection. The good thing was that just lying in the medical bed would keep the infection under control, and the infection level wouldn’t rise anymore.
"I only have painkillers," said Lin Wu, who knew that painkillers only helped with healing and pain relief.
Shana was somewhat worried, "Can you hold on?"
"Shouldn’t be a big problem." This was a corridor with a railing. Lin Wu leaned out of the corridor to look down near the staircase, where zombies crowded. These zombies had last heard a noise at the first-floor stairwell, so they would loiter there. If they did not hear any sounds or see any players within a certain period, they would gradually disperse.
Lin Wu fitted the last improvised silencer. The apartment base covered the safety zone in a flat, not three-dimensional manner. Without a silencer, the zombies on the ground floor would definitely hear the gunfire. Lin Wu aimed at the belly of an Exploding Carnage zombie wandering thirty meters away and fired. After the ’bang,’ nearby zombies all converged towards the source of the sound. Base 01 was temporarily out of crisis.
...
Although Lin Wu didn’t bother the Shadow base, the whole Shadow base was stirring again. As soon as Stone realized that Lin Wu and Shana had suddenly left the base, he immediately grabbed the radio to call them but couldn’t get through. For safety, Lin Wu had turned off his walkie-talkie; otherwise, any sudden message from Stone during the stealth like: "Bro, where are you?" would lead straight to disaster.
Stone woke everyone up, and they gathered around the campfire to speculate. An unreliable guess was that Lin Wu and Shana ran into a large base in the county and decided to defect with their weapons.
An even more unreliable guess came from Little Knife, who believed that Lin Wu would never betray them without saying goodbye. She speculated that Lin Wu, on the brink of death, didn’t want to sadden the group and hence left the base to face his death.
The most unreliable guess came from Hun Dan: "They’ve gone to get married."
Everyone was speculating wildly, left with no choice but to guess in the absence of information, destined for another sleepless night.
On the other hand, Lin Wu, who had recovered a bit, sat leaning against the doorway on alert. Base 01 was room 202, located in the middle of the corridor, with a staircase to the left and right. The same corridor had two more apartment units, and it was believed that zombies were hiding in both.
Lying on the hospital bed, Shana unconsciously forgot about exiting the Shadow Base, took a magazine from the bedside table next to her, and began reading by the candlelight provided by the system.
The apartment base not only had a small safe area but also just two building units, and the maximum storage limit for the five major materials was only 10 points. Despite the small size, it gave people a long-missed feeling of home. At least that was the case for Lin Wu. There was a small living room, small bedroom, small restroom, and the small living room also included a tiny kitchen and dining area.
...
Lin Wu didn’t disturb Shana in the inner room. The presence of two Frenzy zombies playing in the small park about ten meters away made him rather uneasy. After observing for a while, Lin Wu noticed that the zombies in his unit were crowded at the exit of the building, where dozens of zombies were pushing against each other, including several Screeching Zombies.
Lin Wu guessed that the sound of him killing the Exploding Carnage might have attracted the horde of zombies patrolling Route 1, and hearing the explosion, they poured into the community. He could only hope they would disperse quickly after failing to find their target. It seemed like they didn’t want to disperse, but rather the road was congested, and with the community being such a small maze, they couldn’t find their own group, differentiate whether their comrades beside them were loose or bulk, nor know who to follow, leading to utter chaos on site.
After grasping the basic situation, Lin Wu closed the door and lay down with his gun in the living room. Inside, the candle was more decorative than illuminating. Soon after, a red dot appeared on the small map of the base. Lin Wu pulled back the curtains slightly from the wall and saw a zombie slowly making its way to the front door of the base, stopping after every couple of steps.
Lin Wu’s hand gripped the doorknob, ready to head out if the zombie knocked. After a wait, the zombie slowly moved away, only for another to appear.
A ball of paper was thrown from the inner room. Lin Wu let go of the doorknob, went into the inner room, and saw Shana lying lazily on the hospital bed. He approached and whispered the situation in her ear. Lastly, Lin Wu said, "The distance between the apartment buildings is narrow. After daybreak, we’ll head to the rooftop, use it to retreat near the county marker, and then escape the community by rappelling down the buildings with a rope."
Shana nodded and quietly asked, "Are you hurt?"
Even her quiet voice was a bit too loud, and the zombie at the door began pounding on it. Lin Wu hurried to the door, pushed it open, knocking the zombie to the ground, not bothering with it as he took aim at another Exploding Carnage a dozen meters away. The sound of the Exploding Carnage immediately attracted the zombies that were originally heading toward Base 01.
After dealing with the zombie on the ground, Lin Wu closed the front door, went back into the inner room to close that door as well, and approached Shana to ask, "What?"
Shana asked again, "Are you hurt?"
"No, better not talk much. Your voice carries too well," Lin Wu explained. "On the cliff at the base, I could scream my lungs out and the zombies ignored me, but one howl from you and you’d gather a whole crowd of them."
Shana angrily retorted, "With that attitude, I won’t thank you now."
"No thanks needed," Lin Wu replied. "If I have the chance, it’s my duty to bring you back alive."
"And if there’s no chance?"
Lin Wu replied, "No chance, of course, means I’d abandon you."
Shana shook her head. "You shouldn’t say that to a girl. You should say that you’ll never leave her side, that you’ll stand by her in life and death. A girl would be moved by that, and her affection for you would soar."
Lin Wu replied, "I’m not a playboy, I don’t need girls to like me, and I can’t make everyone like me."
Shana said, "Tell me your story."
