Chapter 672: Chapter 319 The Only Divine Artifact_2

"It’s not very big,"

Maya asked, "But Phantom is very picky with food. Not to mention that you can’t find good pasture near the Doomsday Fortress, even if you do find it, are you going to graze it every day? Look at the time, winter is approaching. If you don’t let Phantom eat pasture, you’ll have to prepare fodder for it."

Lin Wu gave a bitter smile, "So I can’t keep it?"

"You can’t keep it," Maya nodded seriously.

"Then kill it, and let me let go of the idea," Lin Wu said.

Thus, the only washing machine in the entire server met its end at the barrel of Maya’s gun.

"You really did it?" Lin Wu cried his heart out.

Maya looked at Wai, "Go comfort your master," she said as she walked away, letting Lin Wu continue his drama.

...

Desert Town was large with many houses. Lin Ma searched about 70% of the area and only found one intact plastic mineral water bottle suitable for holding water. The town also provided an explanation, after the residents relocated, a professional environmental company cleaned up the trash, resulting in no garbage to pick up.

Given the scarcity of resources, Lin Ma rationed food by packing up the tent at three in the afternoon and traveling at night at seven. The next day, during their rest, Lin Ma could distinctly feel the terrain was descending. By eleven o’clock that night, Lin Ma saw the long-lost lit-up area. Even in Hardcore Mode, the system still preserved street lamps in system towns.

The closer they moved towards Lit-up Town, the less sandy the ground became, and soon green trees and grass appeared. However, Lin Ma was then blocked by a large river; the bridge on Highway 88 had completely collapsed. Their estimated straight-line distance to Lit-up town was about 20 kilometers.

Using night-vision goggles to check the surrounding materials, Maya instructed Lin Wu to set up the tent on an open area 100 meters from the river. After setting up the tent, the threat level of the tent base rose to two stars.

After daylight came, Lin Ma greeted a day of rest and labor. Maya chopped trees for building materials, first constructing a workshop for making tools and maintaining weapons. With a workshop in place, they made a stone axe from branches and stones. Due to a lack of scrap iron, Maya’s watermelon knife, which was almost out of durability, was temporarily put away.

Lin Wu’s drone brought good news: there were abundant resources along the river, plenty of trees, water sources, and food were not an issue.

But it also brought bad news: within 10 kilometers there was no river crossing point, no bridge, no ferry. The river was at its narrowest 90 meters wide; the depth was unknown, and the current was rapid in most areas, especially turbulent in a few.

Based on the situation, Lin Ma and Wai wouldn’t have much trouble crossing the river; they just had to float downstream and gradually make it to the bank. However, the two horses wouldn’t be able to cross at all.

The first solution was to abandon Dould Ma, but with Doomsday Fortress still at the ends of the earth, without the aid of horses, they might reach the fortress, but the game would be virtually over.

The second solution was to detour. Since the river wasn’t straight, Lin Wu’s drone hadn’t spotted bridges or ferries along the river, not ruling out the possibility of obstructions in the line of sight.

Maya naturally decided on the second option and started heading upstream. The further upstream they went, the fewer the tributaries and the narrower the river would be. It was unclear when a path would be found, but certainly, compared to the desert trek of the previous days, this place could be called paradise. After several difficult days of survival, Maya had given up the original plan of traveling in three-day segments and also let go of the rush to get home.

Home was but a direction, a goal, not a method.

By the afternoon, they had successfully built the kitchen and dormitory. Lin Wu remembered the washing machine for three seconds, rummaged a small pack of black tea from his backpack, brewed a pot, and took it to the worksite thirty meters away. Upon arriving, he placed the tea on a stone stool, along with some jerky. Maya sat down too; they enjoyed the breeze from the river and sipped the hot tea in a very comfortable temperature.

Maya drank up her tea and prepared to resume work, but Wai wasn’t happy. Seeing this, Lin Ma immediately grabbed the assault rifle. Wai faced a one-meter wide rural path along the river embankment, where the sides were overgrown with weeds and various trees, obscuring any clear view.

Maya pointed upwards, "Above."

Lin Wu looked up and saw an eagle soaring five hundred meters above them.

Lin Wu asked, "Should I shoot it down? I’ve never eaten eagle meat. Is it edible? Is it delicious?"

Maya pointed at Wai and Lin Wu, then gestured to the side. The two split up and surrounded the river bank. They had just taken a few steps when a boy on a bicycle emerged from the hidden area. Upon seeing the two armed figures twenty meters away, the boy was startled, stopped with one foot on the ground, and raised his hands to show that he was unarmed, saying, "I mean no harm; I’m a player from nearby."

Maya lowered her gun but remained alert, "Nearby?"

"Ten kilometers away, Cloud Dream tribe, I’m Little Fire." The boy appeared young, likely not yet twenty, with a quite sunny and bright demeanor. He observed their weapons, "You’re not newbies?"

"Yes and no, my name is Lin Wu." Lin Wu put away his weapon and stepped forward to shake hands with Little Fire, asking, "You spotted us from ten kilometers away?"

"Oh!" Little Fire realized their wariness, looked up at the sky and put the little finger of both hands to his mouth and whistled loudly. The eagle that had been circling high above swiftly dived down, and as it neared the ground, it spread its wings to land smoothly on Little Fire’s shoulder.

Little Fire introduced, "Old Fire, my hunting eagle."

Lin Wu exclaimed, "You’re a Hunter too?"

Little Fire was also surprised, "Too? You’re a Hunter as well?"

Lin Wu looked down at Wai at his feet, "Wai, Hunting Dog." Feeling like you’re not quite up to snuff.
