Chapter 664: Chapter 316 Choose One
After getting permission, Qinglang immediately went to fetch the shells, while Lin Wu leaned close to Maya’s ear and said, "See, I’m actually quite mature."
Maya replied, "That’s because you’re not interested. Think about what you did when you got the Silencer, then think about what you’re doing to Wai."
"Ha!" How annoying, what did I do to Wai? Didn’t I just use it as a blanket, pillow, and mosquito repellent...
Maya looked at Lin Wu, "But there’s one thing I don’t understand. Why do you like bolt-action rifles but dislike cannons?"
Lin Wu answered, "Fussing around for half a minute just for one shot. Whether it’s aiming, adjusting, or moving the shells, none of it is fun. Bolt-action rifles are different. Aside from the outcome, the mechanical rhythm of the process is very stress-relieving. Most importantly, it’s not tiring."
Maya nodded, understanding that laziness explained the root of human progress and also cleared up her own question.
Qinglang arrived with the shells, loaded them into the breech, and aimed, "One degree left... good! Lower by one degree... good!"
After pulling the lanyard, Qinglang jumped and exclaimed, "Oh no, don’t die on me." I should let it regain some health. After the explosion, seeing that the enemy was left with just a sliver of health, Qinglang relaxed, "Good, good."
"I’m off to cook dinner and double as a driver," Lin Wu said as he left. Day after day, neither cooking nor driving, the driver and the cook busy themselves firing cannons every day. Of course, driving at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour doesn’t actually require a driver, and even if it did, Lin Wu could scream to summon the two official drivers from the rear of the train to the front.
What should have been a heart-pounding chase by the Spider Train had become, in Lin Wu’s eyes, a boring reverse chase. No, not a chase, but rather a slaughter. If there was a Spider Train Protection Association, the Orient Express would be sued until it didn’t have a single wheel left.
...
After dinner was ready, Lin Wu informed the two who were still toying with the engine, "There’s a Spider Train ahead."
"Take care of it," Maya commanded and headed to the front. She saw Carriage No. 9, a Spider Train engine, creeping along at a sluggish speed of 50 kilometers per hour 1 kilometer ahead. Maya opened the electronic map, "Damn, there’s only one track within 100 kilometers." The problem wasn’t that Carriage No. 9 could harm the Orient Express, but that the Orient Express couldn’t harm them.
Maya adjusted the speed of the Orient Express to 50 and ran to the flatbed carriage, while Lin Wu brought a bowl of mutton paomo to the cargo carriage, catching sight of the two fools moving the Flat-firing Gun’s barrel with the turntable.
As the turntable rotated, the barrel slowly raised, first at a 90-degree angle, then tilted toward the front of the train. In three minutes, they had converted the Flat-firing Gun into a howitzer. Lin Wu had his doubts about it. Without aiming and without visual correction, could a howitzer hit Carriage No. 9 of the Spider Train?
Maya reached the engine, and after Qinglang loaded and fired, a shell flew over the roof, landing on a house by the road used for decoration because of the curvature of the tracks. Watching the house collapse in the explosion, Lin Wu clapped and praised, "Impressive, my Qinglang."
Maya ignored Lin Wu. She began to speed up the train, slowly approaching No. 9 Spider Train engine. She watched the electronic map for a bend and picked up the walkie-talkie to give an order, "Turn left five rotations."
"Five rotations," Qinglang confirmed through the walkie-talkie, turning the barrel left. Five rotations were the unit for the turntable.
"Wait for it, wait for it," Maya watched both the No. 9 engine ahead and the speedometer on the control panel, along with the electronic map, "Wait for it... fire!"
Due to the curve and the darkness, Qinglang couldn’t see the exact position of the engine. Maya could only see No. 9 on a straight line. But both saw the shell land precisely on the engine and explode. Lin Wu could hear Qinglang’s cheer from the back of the train at the front.
"Another one, another one," urged Qinglang.
"Turn right two rotations," Maya continued her divine operation, "Wait for it... fire!"
Poor No. 9 Spider Train was struck again. As the tracks curved more sharply ahead, Maya took out pen and paper to start calculating. For the first time, Lin Wu, a mere spectator until now, realized higher math could be applied in gaming.
"Fire!"
The shell flew into the darkness and in a flash, No. 9 engine was blasted away. Qinglang and Maya cheered in unison, with Maya keeping her cool and ordering after their cheer, "There are no tunnels ahead, you can turn the barrel back now." After all, Spider Trains appearing ahead weren’t fatal, it was those that came from behind that were deadly.
Qinglang turned the turntable with a mad fervor, and was only just positioning the barrel back in place when Maya brought news, "We have spotted a Spider Train ahead."
"Roger that," Qinglang continued to turn the turntable with enthusiasm and speed.
This was a Spider Train that had been hunting players, meant to be his game alone, but this interloper had muscled in. Five shots, three hits, and the Spider Train was sent to hell.
Lin Wu, who had remained an observer, continued to watch the two perform, delivering food and drinks to them. Maya analyzed the high ground from the map, driving the train to an elevated area to scout for Spider Trains from above. In their spare time, the two would stare with eyes as wide as copper bells, searching for any Spider Trains within sight. When busy, Maya took care of aiming and adjusting, while Qinglang handled transporting the shells and firing the cannon.
By around 5 a.m., a total of eight Spider Trains had died at the hands of the Orient Express, and they’d collected a large pile of assorted loot. Give me a lever, and I can lift the earth. Give me a cannon, and I can rule the server.
