Chapter 659: Chapter 314: Red Eye_2

Both collapsed on the hospital beds, and Maya said, "The repeater gun’s rate of fire is too slow." Rack the bolt, load the bullet, chamber it, aim, and fire—a whole cycle takes about 5 seconds. Add to that the time it takes to fetch the bullet and aim accurately, and it takes even longer.

Lin Wu’s revolver was quicker, but with so many targets, he had to fire a shot every 1.5 seconds, which was torture due to Lock Head’s after-effects. It couldn’t be used continuously, resulting in some slip through.

Qinglang, who came to visit, comforted them, "Don’t worry, the Red Eye is just an isolated incident."

As soon as he finished speaking, an alarm sounded from the front of the train. Maya exclaimed, "Damn, we’re entering a speed-restricted section."

In the figure-eight track, there were only two sections restricted to 60 kilometers per hour, and they were approaching the first one. Forced to slow down, Qinglang lost their edge, and the Green Eye Spider Train chased after them. The two, nursing light wounds, had no choice but to leave their sickbeds and brace for battle again.

Up ahead, there was originally only one set of tracks, but now, one curved in a semicircle to the right to align with them—this one bore a train known as the Pearl. Soon, the two trains were racing at 60 kilometers per hour side by side, one on the left and one on the right.

The handsome conductor of the Pearl opened the door of the train’s engine and shouted at Qinglang, "Bro, are you guys doing alright?" His tone wasn’t one of concern but of schadenfreude.

The driver handed the handsome conductor a microphone connected to a wire, resembling a walkie-talkie, and with the microphone in hand, the conductor called out, "How about it, beauty in the back, come over to our train. Choose any of the 8 handsome guys at will."

"Woo woo!" A pack of lackeys howled in unison.

At that moment, a fierce battle was unfolding behind the Orient Express, and the eight hunks of the Pearl pressed against the rear of their train to watch the excitement. Constant calls came from them, "Hey, little beauty, just call me ’brother,’ and I’ll fire a shot for you."

The rest of the group egged her on, "Call ’daddy’!"

Maya glanced at him, which only excited him more. She grabbed the walkie-talkie, "Plan C."

"Understood!" Qinglang immediately sped up. The car swayed violently, and at the right moment, Qinglang turned right, switching to the right track at the turnout, narrowly avoiding a collision with the Pearl as the tail of the Orient Express barely missed the Pearl’s engine. The Spider Train’s head followed the Orient Express onto the right track.

It was only then that the driver of the Pearl realized something was wrong. The Spider Train on the left didn’t care about the Pearl at all—it was squeezing onto the right track through the turnout, and it was too late to brake. Ultimately, the Spider Train’s front crashed onto the Pearl’s third carriage. After the collision, the Pearl derailed to the roadside on the right side of the tracks, while the Spider Train’s head toppled on the left side of the tracks.

However, the Spider Train had legs. With a flip, it was back up. Instead of continuing to pursue the Orient Express on the tracks, it pounced toward the roadside Pearl. The first one to suffer was the handsome conductor. Just as he emerged from the train to assess the situation, a spider leg pierced him through, sending him into the gaping maw.

The Spider Train’s head then smashed down atop the train, and under the havoc of its eight legs and gaping mouth, debris flew everywhere. The people inside the carriage struggled in vain, utterly helpless to stop the Spider Train and its brood of smaller spiders; it was a one-sided massacre.

Watching this appalling scene from the rear, Maya extended her left fist and Lin Wu bumped it with his right, saying, "If they had assisted us in defense, this wouldn’t have happened."

"No, even if they didn’t assist us, as long as they hadn’t reveled in our misfortune, this wouldn’t have happened," Maya replied. "Helping is a favor; not helping is the norm. But if you get involved with the attitude of kicking someone while they’re down, then you’re just inviting yourself to be the scapegoat."

Lin Wu agreed and complained on the side, "Why didn’t we derail when we were going 80 in the 60 zone?"

At those words, Maya almost throttled Lin Wu. Some day when Dawn doesn’t spoil you, see whom you’ll turn to for reason.

But Dawn wouldn’t talk nonsense because of Lin Wu’s mischief. Little White Rabbit, dutiful and proper, answered his question. First, the speed limit of any section represents the safe speed, and exceeding this speed is dangerous but not necessarily fatal. The faster you go above the limit, the greater the chance of derailing, but it’s not a certainty.

Furthermore, the safe speed is calculated based on the worst condition of the train. For example, with more than ten carriages, or if the average weight of the train carriages is light, or if the train’s acceleration is uneven. Even in the worst-case scenario, as long as the speed is within 60 kilometers per hour, derailing will not occur. Conversely, for a train in good condition, even if speeding, the risk is relatively low.

The Orient Express’ biggest advantage is its armor. With added armor, coal consumption increased due to the added weight, thus compared to lighter trains, the risk of derailment for the Express was lower.

Last but not least is the integrity of the carriages. Since every carriage of the Orient Express, besides the flatbeds, was 100% intact, speeding up to 20% over the limit was basically safe for the Orient Express, and even going beyond that wasn’t highly dangerous.

This news was good for the Orient Express, signifying they could legally speed in restricted sections. But joy lasted only three seconds before Qinglang brought bad news: after switching to the right track, there was a divergence, pulling them off the figure-eight route. Judging by the direction of the train and the tracks, they were getting further from the figure-eight, with slim chances of return.

Qinglang’s conclusion to the whole affair was that one should be kind, for when you meet someone worse than you, you become the target of bullying. He said this not only for the Pearl but also for the Orient Express. Although the Express used the Pearl to temporarily shake off the Spider Train, it had driven onto an unknown track.
