Chapter 655 - 313 Challenge

Chapter 655: Chapter 313 Challenge

The challenge had only one route, which still used the Orient Express, and upon the conclusion of the challenge, win or lose, all items on the Orient Express would return to their original state.

The train initially traveled at a speed of 50 mph, around one minute or so, when even inside the carriage, it was clearly felt how the shaking of the carriage was caused by the quivering tracks. From the tail of the train, one could see the Spider Train itself.

The Spider Train’s head had a Demon’s face, with two green eyes and a malevolently grinning smile. In addition, there were eight sturdy legs on either side of the head, which not only allowed it to slide on the tracks but also to accelerate by running on its legs. There was something resembling a whistle on top of the train’s head, with two moderately-sized holes on either side of the whistle-like object. Behind the whistle was a chimney, which was belching out thick black smoke at that time.

Maya, "Accelerate to maximum speed."

Qinglang dashed to the front of the train to adjust the speed, and after the speed increased, the distance between them and the head of the Spider Train grew. At that moment, the shaking of the train became even more violent, and the control panel sounded a warning, Danger, danger. Upon checking, it was found that this section of the railway was a curve, and speeds exceeding 80 mph could potentially lead to derailment.

After learning this, Maya said, "Adjust to 70."

About 20 seconds later, the head of the Spider Train appeared again, Maya, "80!"

The Spider Train continued to close in, Maya, "90."

The Spider Train was still approaching, Maya, "95."

"We’re going to derail." The entire train started to shake violently.

Observing for a moment, Maya said, "Adjust to 80! The Spider Train’s minimum speed is 95. Open fire."

Lin Wu had been prepared in the campfire carriage, and upon hearing Maya’s command, he stepped to the side door of the passageway and fired a bullet at the Spider Train with his repeater gun. The distance between them was 200 meters, which was not within range, but due to the difference in speeds, the bullet hit the head of the train and sparked. The Spider Train seemed completely unaffected and continued to chase at high speed.

"Aim for the eyes."

Lin Wu took aim and fired, hitting the eye, and a long red bar appeared atop the Spider Train’s head. The health bar dropped by about 1% due to the bullet. At the same time, the Spider Train’s speed slacked, dropping to an estimated 70 km/h. About 3 seconds later, the Spider Train caught up again.

The repeater gun was slow to reload and, as the next shot failed to hit the eye, the Spider Train closed in quickly to about 100 meters. Then, numerous spiders leapt from the two dark holes next to the whistle, with their colorful and nauseating appearance. First, they jumped onto the head of the train, then forward onto the tracks, rapidly approaching the Orient Express by constantly bouncing, as the green bars above their heads, indicating their stamina, quickly depleted.

When they were about 15 meters from the flatbed carriage, a spider with almost depleted green bar fired a web that struck the flatbed carriage, and then it was tugged onto the flatbed. After landing on the flatbed carriage, the spider jumped from the back to the front of the flatbed, where Lin Wu blasted it in midair with a shotgun. A system prompt indicated an armor-piercing bullet for the repeater gun had been gained.

Lin Wu handed the bullet to Maya, who loaded the armor-piercing round, took aim for a few seconds, and struck the Spider Train’s eye. The Spider Train let out a howl, spewing thick black smoke, and the train swayed on the tracks, its health dropped by 5%, and its speed was reduced to 50 km/h, which it took 10 seconds to start increasing again.

Not every spider dropped armor-piercing bullets, nor could the head of the Spider Train always eject spiders. When the second chase came, the Spider Train didn’t eject spiders, and the two holes that spewed them showed a 20-second countdown for cooldown.

The Spider Train closed the gap to 100 meters when a white silk thread spat out from the whistle and stuck to the flatbed carriage. The driver, Qinglang, then reported, "The train is slowing down."

Maya, "100 kilometers per hour."

After a 5-second countdown, a second web was shot from the whistle and stuck to the flatbed carriage.

Qinglang reported, "Not only is the speed not reaching the target, but it’s consistently decreasing." He had set it to 100 mph, but not only did the speed of the train not increase towards 100, it actually began falling.

Maya jumped from the campfire carriage to the flatbed carriage, holding a watermelon knife. A web flew towards her and struck Maya, who swiftly swung her knife to cut through the web, but the pull of the web caused her to fall onto the flatbed carriage.

Lin Wu followed Maya to the flatbed carriage, wielding a dagger, quickly reaching the back of the train to sever the web sticking to the flatbed. The next second, a web struck Lin Wu. Before he could react, he was yanked away. The Spider Train opened its malevolent mouth and swallowed Lin Wu whole.

After swallowing Lin Wu, the Spider Train’s whistle emitted a happy whoo-whoo sound, its health bar was full again, and it spit out another web to grab onto the flatbed carriage. Maya didn’t attempt to cut the web this time; she turned and leaped back onto the campfire carriage, "Is there a speed limit on the track?"

Qinglang, "The speed limit has been lifted, but the speed isn’t increasing."

As the train captain, Maya gave the order to detach the flatbed carriage, which then separated from the train. The Spider Train leaped onto the flatbed, with black smoke shrouding it and the flatbed, while it also slowed down, sliding on the tracks purely by inertia.

Maya asked Qinglang to slow down to 30, as she needed data.

After about a minute, the Spider Train, having digested the flatbed carriage, began to accelerate, and Maya noted the time and asked Qinglang to operate at maximum speed. She had the basic data; now it was just a matter of completing the challenge.

Maya noticed that the Spider Web Railway was very damaging, even though many sections allowed for maximum speed, some parts required slowing down. In the subsequent chase, the average speed of the Orient Express was about 90 km/h, while the Spider Train’s maximum speed was 95 km/h.
