Chapter 652: Chapter 312 Curtain Call Station
Maya said, "We’ll stop at Town 20 for one hour. We no longer need to replenish our coal supplies or pawn extra items for money to buy bullets in the armed carriage."
"Our bullet inventory is sufficient," Lin Wu reminded.
"Did you forget how many bullets the players fired in the last few hours at Waste City?" Maya said. "I’ll organize the warehouse items and sell all the excess things, adding to the remaining cash we have, we should be able to scrounge up a couple of hundred bucks."
Qinglang reminded, "Aren’t you considering keeping some cash for Curtain Town?"
Maya asked, "How many passengers are left?"
"Four."
Maya said, "The Forty dollars in fare from the four passengers will be kept for use in Curtain Town. We can’t bet on the last stop."
"The last?"
Maya nodded, "It should be. Lin Wu, keep a close watch on Nightmare’s whereabouts."
"Understood." Lin Wu petted Wai’s head, "Wai, it’s up to you now."
...
Town 20 was practically a carbon copy of Town 10, down to nearly identical roads and NPCs, and there was coal for sale right at the station. With this familiar setup, Maya efficiently made her way to the pawnshop, sold off most of the supplies, and exchanged them for cash. She also rearranged the carriages, swapping the bonfire carriage with the passenger carriage, and moved the passenger carriage to be the first in line.
At four in the afternoon, with the sound of the steam whistle, Lin Wu closed the door of the passenger carriage; the wheels turned, and the train headed for Curtain Town.
As the train gradually picked up speed, a Nightmare who had already slinked close to the tracks lightly jumped onto the flatbed carriage of the Orient Express. She leaned over to one side and peered in through the glass of the connecting door, noticing the passenger carriage had been moved to the front and also spotted Wai running around in the corridor.
With the train in motion, thanks to the wind and the tight seal of the carriages, Nightmare believed Wai wouldn’t be able to sniff out her scent. Once she entered the carriage, she was certain she couldn’t escape the dog’s nose. Nightmare glanced at the side, unable to climb to the passenger carriage from the side without being noticed. She pulled out a tablet, a route navigator that could display the terrain within ten kilometers.
Nightmare climbed onto the roof, walking in small steps atop it. This was her overthinking it — Lin Wu had already fixed all the carriages, so walking normally on the roof didn’t make any noise.
Crossing the gap of less than 30 centimeters between carriages, Nightmare reached the bonfire carriage. After that was the supply carriage, the armed carriage, the medical carriage, and finally the dormitory carriage. Just in front of that was the passenger carriage. To avoid Corpse Looting, Nightmare only brought a pistol, a shotgun, and a few bullets.
Nightmare took out her pistol, stepped onto the passenger carriage, hooked her left leg around the protrusion on top, and tied herself with a rope before slowly lowering herself upside down. To slide down a distance, Nightmare spotted a pair of legs moving in the aisle, so she stopped sliding and looked for Sasha among the passengers’ seats on the right, finding neither Sasha nor any NPC passengers.
Nightmare silently waited for the legs to leave before climbing back up to the roof, checked her tablet, and laid down quietly to wait. In less than a minute, the train entered a tunnel, and Nightmare, prone on the roof, was only twenty centimeters away from the tunnel ceiling.
After the tunnel, Nightmare slowly slid down from the left, seeing Lin Wu sitting by the window. Lin Wu was positioned a bit farther from Nightmare’s spot, enabling her to only see his back. The window next to Lin Wu was open; he seemed to be admiring the distant scenery, or perhaps he was lost in thought.
This was a golden opportunity. Nightmare slowly put the pistol away and took the double-barreled shotgun off her back; this gun could fire twice in quick succession. The first shot would break the glass to injure Lin Wu, and the second could kill him outright. But if Lin Wu had the window open, where did the glass come from? This type of window was the kind that pushed upwards, with two panes overlapping above.
At this moment, Nightmare hesitated again. In her previous communication with Maya, she had made it clear Sasha was her target. So what would killing Lin Wu count for? Killing Lin Wu without revealing herself would only serve to alert Maya that someone was lurking on the train, which was no help in killing Sasha. Thus, Maya wouldn’t believe that Nightmare killed Lin Wu first to target Sasha.
This was the so-called unwritten rule, not explicitly stated nor open for debate. Nightmare hated herself for revealing her intentions to Maya; now, it was binding her own hands and feet.
But where was Sasha? Not to the left, not to the right. The mission stated Sasha couldn’t leave the passenger carriage, so was she ordered to hide lying on the floor? Nightmare believed Lin Wu was capable of this, and she didn’t rule out the possibility of Sasha being stepped on by Lin Wu.
One’s fate must be mastered by oneself. Do it!
Nightmare slid down another ten centimeters, ready to make a move on Lin Wu, only to see him holding a revolver in his left hand and a mirror in his right. This discovery made Nightmare break into a cold sweat; she didn’t know what had gone wrong, but she was certain that the moment she aimed her gun at Lin Wu, he would shoot first. Nightmare didn’t have the confidence to contend with Lock Head’s trick shot skills.
Before Lin Wu could make a move or speak, Nightmare forcefully climbed back to the roof. Now that her presence was detected, she stopped hiding and raised her shotgun, firing directly at the carriage below. The first shot pierced the carriage, and although the pellets hardly had any lethality, it opened a hole. The second shot exploded into the carriage at the same spot.
