Chapter 647: Chapter 310 Ambush
The fifth day was extremely quiet during the day; the Orient Express made stops at two small towns, and neither the train nor its members faced any threats. By six in the evening, just as the train had started its journey, Nightmare called Maya, "The battle will take place tomorrow morning."
Maya countered, "So soon? Why not gather more resources and strike a fatal blow on the last day?"
Nightmare was taken aback for a few seconds before asking, "Don’t you know the seventh day is the time for the system event?"
"No, I didn’t."
"From 8 a.m. on the seventh day to 7 a.m. on the eighth day, that’s the system event time for this activity. We will leave the instance at 8 a.m. on the seventh day," Nightmare explained.
Maya asked, "That’s strange, Sasha’s mission didn’t mention this."
"Because the Fortress agents failed in their assassination, the villains have completely lost hope in humanity. Therefore, on the last day of the event, the villains will send someone to kill Sasha," replied Nightmare.
"Who is this someone?" Maya inquired.
"Sorry, I don’t know either, don’t you guys have a mission prompt? Or have you not communicated with Sasha since she got on board?" Nightmare said.
"We haven’t," Maya answered honestly.
"Haha, you’re becoming more and more like Lin Wu. In the past, you wouldn’t miss any opportunity to gather information," Nightmare chuckled. "From 8 a.m. tomorrow morning to 7 p.m. tomorrow afternoon is our time to duel. Maya, we’re only after Sasha and Lin Wu, and if you’re willing to cooperate, we won’t hurt the innocent. You know you can’t survive the 10-minute defense battle. Not to mention the zombies attacking you, to be honest, do you think you could withstand our 10-person assault for 10 minutes?"
"Let’s wait and see," said Maya, who discovered that Nightmare had inadvertently revealed one piece of information—that they could stop the Orient Express.
"Alright, we shall see. By the way, here’s some good news for you, Shadow’s people are still alive. However, they only reached Town No. 10 today, so they didn’t participate in the hunting game. As long as they don’t play themselves to death, they should be able to come out of the event in one piece," Nightmare conveyed.
"Thank you," Maya said.
"Good night," Nightmare said.
"Good night."
...
On the fifth night, they had a choice of three pathways, also the last set of three choices: dodge, block, and dodge and block. Yet another set of inexplicable options. The Deductionist Lin Wu said, "It seems that Line 3 is the worst, having to both dodge and block, but after thinking it through, I believe Line 3 might actually be the best choice."
Maya looked at Hong Yi, and Hong Yi said, "Even though what he says doesn’t seem reliable, the results often prove his words to be right, so I really can’t comment on this."
Qinglang sighed, "Same here."
So they chose Line 3, dodge and block.
After switching to Line 3, what followed was a sky lit up with countless small stones, ablaze like raindrops falling from the sky, along with the occasional larger rock bursting with bright flames.
Dodge: Avoid meteorites; failing to dodge once will reduce the train’s top speed to 20 kilometers per hour. Fail a second time, and enter a two-minute defense battle. Every subsequent failure to dodge adds one minute to the defense battle duration.
Block: Fend off the destruction from the small meteorites; if the car’s durability drops to 0%, the car will be permanently damaged and cannot be repaired.
Dodge and Block: Face both disasters at the same time for double score rewards.
The players were given 200 repair materials necessary for their mission; repairing 20% of a car’s durability only required using one material.
"Haha," initiator Lin Wu boasted boldly, "Bring it on, aliens."
Hong Yi pinched Lin Wu’s arm, "I knew I shouldn’t have listened to your nonsense."
Qinglang didn’t see it that way, "If we had chosen only to dodge, this repairman could’ve had a big sleep. He’s played himself."
While they spoke, Maya applied the emergency brakes, the wheels screeching sharply, as a meteorite smashed into the ground 120 meters in front of the locomotive. Remarkably, the meteorite drilled a hole between the tracks and burrowed in, not affecting the train’s operation.
Looking up, Maya accelerated to maximum speed, successfully avoiding another meteorite, "Qinglang, you take the wheel. Hong Yi, go to sleep. Lin Wu, handle the repairs for any cars over 50% damage but only repair up to 70% durability, using increments of 20% for each repair."
Hong Yi gave Lin Wu and Qinglang a smiling nod before merrily heading off to sleep.
The small stones rained down on the cars with a pitter-patter, slowly lowering the car’s durability. Maya headed to the flatbed car. When the train moved swiftly, the stone rain couldn’t fully cover the flatbed, offering a safe zone where Maya observed the larger meteorites from outside the car. Picking up the intercom, she said, "Speed 50."
Qinglang responded through the intercom, "Speed 50!" adjusting the speed to 50, as the train gradually slowed to 50 kilometers per hour.
Maya kept her eyes on the approaching meteorites, timing the distance and speed. "Speed 20," she spoke into the intercom.
"Speed 20," and they successfully dodged the third meteorite.
Inside the car, Lin Wu grabbed the repairman’s special wrench and entered the passenger car, where a point of light with a wrench icon appeared. After making contact with it, Lin Wu began to turn the wrench; as the materials were slowly consumed, the car’s durability swiftly recovered. After finishing, Lin Wu saw the dormitory car’s durability had fallen to 48% and ran to repair it, followed by the armed car and the flatbed.
In the midst of his busy repairs, Lin Wu picked up the intercom and asked, "Can we detach a few cars?"
