Chapter 600: Chapter 293: Town No. 1
Lin Wu neither agreed nor disagreed, handing the repeater gun and bullets to Maya. Maya called Lin Wu to the dormitory carriage, where everyone was busy and holding a meeting. Maya said, "The next stop is a human station. Qinglang, you take the lead in tallying the supplies. Lin Wu and Hong Yi, you two are in charge of gathering information, including trade details. Check if anyone is buying what we have, and then record the prices of necessities we need, such as carriage cards, job cards, food, firearms, bullets, and so forth."
Maya: "When the whistle blows once, reminder yourselves to watch the time. If it blows twice, hurry up and return within 300 meters of the train as quickly as possible. Three blasts, regardless of the situation, return to the train immediately."
Lin Wu raised his hand: "What if I have just paid but haven’t received the goods when the whistle blows?"
Maya firmly replied: "You must return. It’s a rule, a rule that must be executed unconditionally. I know wasting a few seconds might not seem like a big issue, but it’s a rule that must be carried out immediately." Lin Wu’s question was meant for Maya’s answer, to tell everyone the importance of adhering to the rules. A delay of a few seconds might seem harmless, but it could potentially endanger everyone on the train.
Maya: "Qinglang, prepare a set of bedding and some food to be sent to the locomotive to help Shuihua set up. He will need to spend most of his time there."
Qinglang nodded, saying, "I’ve checked the food, and it’s barely enough for the five of us for two meals, which accounts for today’s food."
Maya: "It seems food and water must take precedence over weapons."
Lin Wu looked out the window: "We are passing by a lake."
Maya looked down and regretfully said, "We don’t have any water storage containers." Otherwise, they could have made a temporary stop to address their water issue.
With that in mind, they really needed a lot of supplies, and the small dormitory carriage was almost crammed full. So, was it more urgent to add more carriages?
The dormitory carriage had a total of five beds, arranged horizontally. The damned Dawn had strict control over the size of the beds: the greater the number of people, the smaller the beds; the fewer the people, the larger the beds, with a maximum capacity of eight beds. The beds took up two-thirds of the space, leaving only one-third for the aisle, where two people had to sidestep to avoid contact when passing each other.
In contrast, the passenger cabin was more spacious, with just 20 seats in a large carriage.
"Maya!" Shuihua shouted.
"Coming."
Shuihua pointed at the control panel, which displayed a message: A coal transfer station detected two kilometers ahead, do you want to stop? Shuihua reminded, "The process of stopping while driving is longer than when at rest, and the further the speed is from 50, the more coal is consumed."
Maya: "The game has just started, and the difficulty won’t be too high, so stop the train."
"Alright."
Maya turned around while walking and called out: "Everyone pay attention, there’s a coal transfer station ahead, and we will make a temporary stop to find coal. Lin Wu, as usual, scavenge for any usable supplies."
The transfer station was right by the railroad tracks. As the train slowed, Maya stood next to Shuihua and watched the transfer station. Past a patch of reeds, suddenly two zombies appeared. Maya immediately said, "Go, speed up."
Shuihua followed the order as Maya looked at the train’s speed, which had dropped to 5 kilometers per hour, and shouted, "Be alert, prepare for battle." Damn Dawn.
The train was 30 meters from the station when a horde of zombies poured out of the transfer station. Maya: "Full speed ahead."
Attracted by the train’s noise, zombies started charging toward the train, which was slowly picking up speed. One zombie leapt onto the locomotive and was kicked down by Maya. Another zombie jumped down from a higher position and slammed into a carriage, getting flung aside by the impact, which also shattered a side window of the dormitory carriage.
With only two guns and no melee weapons, the players were lacking in defensive capabilities. Fortunately, the acceleration was timely enough that the remaining zombies were unable to board the train. But even in this situation, they continued to throw themselves against the train. After escaping the crisis, Maya took inventory and found that the dormitory carriage was 15% damaged, the passenger carriage was 20% damaged, and without supplies on the train, repairs were impossible. Additionally, a window was broken, which seemed to have no effect on the train for now.
Maya considered whether to dismantle the passenger carriage for resources. She wasn’t sure how much fare the passengers could offer or how much the fare could buy. She had lost trust in Dawn, who set a big trap just as the beginner’s tutorial ended. If they hadn’t noticed the zombies in time and had only discovered them after the train had come to a complete stop, everyone would’ve been doomed. Thinking about this outcome still made Maya break out in a cold sweat.
Did Dawn intend to kill off all the hardcore players?
The whistle sounded, and Shuihua shouted, "We’re entering a tunnel." They had to shout to communicate, which was harsh on the throat.
As the train entered the dark tunnel, were there any traps here? Even if there were, there was no choice. There’s only one path by Mount Hua, and it was impossible to carry the train over mountains, wasn’t it?
Observant Qinglang spotted an issue: "Look."
There shouldn’t have been any light inside the tunnel, but there were glowing patterns on the tunnel walls. The patterns were bizarre, including double-lidded eyes, irregular quadrilaterals close to triangles, and patterns made up of two parallel lines with a wavy line in between.
Hong Yi urgently asked, "Who has a pen and paper?" There was a blind fumble, and a collision with the carriage.
Maya silently recorded the patterns in her mind.
Lin Wu, on the other hand, was much more relaxed, pressing Wai’s head against the glass to have it memorize the patterns while he sat swinging his legs leisurely. Since he couldn’t remember them anyway, he didn’t bother trying, but he didn’t rule out the possibility that Wai could remember. Given their inability to communicate complex information, he used actions to convey his intent.
