Chapter 590: Chapter 289: Goodbye Typhoon_2

Most large animals are warm-blooded. There were signs of biological presence, but no heat sources, which, based on the current situation, most likely indicated the presence of Night Demons. This was not a faint-glow night, but overcast skies covered the moon, and it had begun to rain, reducing visibility to less than 10.

Lin Wu asked, "Do we have any headlamps?"

Hong Yi answered, "No."

This was not acceptable, as without seeing the Night Demon, it would be impossible to lock onto it. Wai was already on alert, and with a thought from Lin Wu, the dog took a lit torch in its mouth to lead the way. However, the light from the torch provided only limited visibility, and after roaming through the sand-preventing forest for a while, they didn’t spot any Night Demons.

Maya suggested, "Add more wood, raise the torches higher."

The four of them began chopping down the trees near the fire to feed the flames, each taking up a torch and spacing themselves two meters apart to continue chopping wood. Lin Wu, with Wai beside him, patrolled the area with a pistol at the ready. He didn’t dare let Wai roam too far, as a single bite from a Night Demon would require at least twenty minutes of treatment.

Suddenly, Lin Wu spun around, nearly hitting the Night Demon following close behind with the torch. Startled, the Demon attempted to flee, but Lin Wu shot it in the head with one shot. How did Lin Wu know there was a Night Demon behind him? One reason was his high attributes, and the other was the wind. Lin Wu was always listening to the wind, and when it abruptly changed direction, it signified that something had interrupted its path.

Corpse Looting, found nothing.

While Lin Wu was looting the corpse, another Night Demon approached Maya from behind, who was at the farthest edge. Sandstorm, who had stayed by the fire, trampled on the embers, scattering sparks and sticks. Maya turned and spotted the Night Demon in the light from her torch, instinctively swinging her watermelon knife at it.

With one slice, the Night Demon stiffened, and Maya continued to slaughter it with left and right slashes to its neck, each targeting a vital point. Due to her strength, speed, and accuracy, the Night Demon remained immobilized and was hacked to death by Maya.

As the Night Demon fell, Maya didn’t loot the corpse, but said, "Three-star Strength, comprehended Passive Skill Swordsmanship."

"Swordsmanship?" Giving up swordsmanship in favor of knife method?

Maya explained, "Knife Method has ten levels, and can be triggered when equipped with any bladed weapon."

Knife Method Level One: Basic chance of Beheading 10%, Basic chance of Infinite Combo 10%. The heavier the weapon you wield, the higher the chance of triggering a beheading. The lighter the weapon, the higher the chance of an infinite combo. Level two increases the bonuses based on the experience gained using the weapon.

The heaviest known knife right now weighs 20 kilograms and is known as the Zhanma Knife. Assuming that the Zhanma Knife is the heaviest knife in the game, using it to kill zombies or animals and leveling Knife Method to level two will boost the base beheading chance from the original 10% to 20%, while maintaining the combo rate at 10%.

Theoretically, if Maya leveled up her Knife Method to ten using the Zhanma Knife, that would equate to a 100% beheading chance. Beheading had an execution effect that could stagger even a Titan. Thus, Maya could become the first person to single-handedly take down a Titan with a melee weapon.

The lightest known knife is the Meat Cutting Knife, weighing just 0.25 kilograms. Theoretically, by only using the Meat Cutting Knife to level up, when reaching the max level of Knife Method, Maya would be able to infinitely combo a zombie to death.

An Infinite Combo is like a follow-up attack—if triggered at 100%, it means every slash is followed by another guaranteed strike, and then another. Sharp Blade weapons inflict a very short period of rigidity, and an infinite combo implies infinite rigidity. Whether Maya chose to level up with a heavy knife or a light one, as long as she pursued it to the extreme, after reaching level ten, she would be unrivaled in melee combat.

If at level ten there was a 50% chance the benefits applied to both heavy and light knives, that wouldn’t be too bad; the effect would be comparable to swordsmanship skill. Most importantly, Knife Method was a strength-based skill, while swordsmanship benefitted from Agility. So no matter how Maya progressed in the future, she wouldn’t be at a loss.

"Congratulations," said Hong Yi and Shuihua, offering their well-wishes.

Lin Wu, filled with envy, remarked, "Such a powerful skill, and you grasped it just like that?"

While chopping wood, Maya retorted, "Are you going to complain again?"

Lin Wu replied, "No point in complaining about a game’s design flaw. What’s the plan? Start with a blunt weapon?"

Curious, Hong Yi asked, "Isn’t it a Knife Method? Don’t you need to wield a knife? Why would you need a blunt weapon?"

Maya explained, "He means that before obtaining a heavy or light knife, I shouldn’t rashly use a sharp blade to kill zombies."

Realization dawned on Hong Yi, "No wonder I’m not an expert."

Lin Wu boasted, "Remember when Maya had swordsmanship, during the Invincible Base’s five-star siege, facing waves of zombies, she fought for three days and nights without even blinking."

Unable to stand it, Maya interrupted, "It was just for a few minutes."

Lin Wu continued, "It was a scene of carnage..."

Maya cut in, "Silence, stay alert."

"Hmph!" Alert it is, what’s so great about that? Silence? I just snorted, and you wouldn’t dare respond, would you?

Lin Wu, in his routine work, might slack off, but when it was a matter of life and death, he was quite dedicated. Despite having mastered a plethora of skills and possessing high attributes, Lin Wu still held Night Demons in high regard. Besides Black Bear, they were his most vexing opponents.

After chopping down the wood, they used vines to bundle it into several small piles. They threaded a stick through two of the piles to make a unit of firewood. They placed two units of firewood on a horse’s back, holding them steady with their hands as they guided the horse back to base.

During the journey, Phantom showed resistance to carrying the load, prompting Lin Wu to unholster his steak knife and pistol, using them to no avail to intimidate the horse. Finally, out of options, he brought over Sandstorm, implying that if Phantom refused to carry the load, he would let it get intimate with Sandstorm. Not entirely clear on what Phantom made of it, after some fuss from Lin Wu, the horse reluctantly agreed to the task.
