Chapter 58: Chapter 57 Gun Brushing
Little Knife reached into the container, pulling out a sleeping zombie and slamming it to the ground. She stepped down once, twice, thrice... Since she didn’t use a weapon, it was almost silent throughout. The only sound, if any, was the low, muffled thud when the skull was crushed underfoot.
Snow Egg dragged the body away to begin searching. Only a short while passed before a new body was produced, which Horse Soul dragged away for searching. Shana took away the third body. Maya stood guard atop the container, always vigilant for any Night Demons that might spawn.
Chewing gum, Little Knife ceaselessly pulled zombies out from inside the container. Including the time for stamina recovery, the fight went on at a pace of 15 seconds per zombie. In less than five minutes, she had stumbled upon a small pistol, a pair of handcuffs, and a prized item among blunt weapons: a retractable baton.
After clearing out one container, they moved on to the next.
Snow Egg, Horse Soul, and Shana robotically repeated the assembly line work in the dark, continuously reaping items that invigorated their weary spirits. Little Knife became more and more energized with each stomp, to the point that everyone started to feel a bit sorry for the zombies. They secretly wished that at least one might put up a bit of resistance, to scare the gleefully violent Little Knife.
By the fourth container, Little Knife’s Trample Execution skill had unexpectedly advanced. She could now crack open a helmet with her first stomp, significantly increasing their work efficiency. In the face of Little Knife’s addiction to stomping, Maya had no choice but to leave her post on top of the container to join the corpse-looting crew. Unbeknownst to them, a Night Demon was silently inching closer to the unwary group of five.
The Night Demon chose its moment and leapt from the container. Its claws instantly pierced through Snow Egg’s shoulder, prompting a loud cry of pain. As Snow Egg turned to see the gaping maw of the Night Demon, in that critical moment, Little Knife reached out, grabbed the Night Demon’s head, and slammed it to the ground, followed without hesitation by a deadly stomp. After crushing its skull, Little Knife realized what had happened and screamed, "What the hell is that?"
Horse Soul, with fast reflexes and being the closest, picked up a blunt weapon and swung it to block the container, preventing any resurgent zombies from rushing out: "Get to the roof."
Maya corrected, "Get on the containers."
Agility personified, Shana was the first to flip onto the container, reaching down to grab the injured Snow Egg by the hand. With Maya’s help lifting, they managed to pull Snow Egg to safety on top of the container. Through combined efforts, the five of them made a narrow escape without incident.
"Retreat," Maya commanded. The appearance of one Night Demon meant a second was sure to follow soon. Little Knife’s instant kill of the Night Demon was purely accidental, a reflex resulting from her mechanical work. She believed the second Night Demon wouldn’t offer her the same lucky chance.
Shana knelt before Snow Egg, took out a bandage, and tightly wrapped it around his left shoulder, immediately alleviating the pain. In the moonlight, looking at the goddess who wrapped his wound, time seemed to stand still for Snow Egg. In that moment, he fell in love with her. But the cursed Horse Soul broke the spell, pulling him to his feet: "Let’s go."
Without Lin Wu to attract attention, everyone had some close encounters with the zombies while escaping through the iron gate. Apart from Little Knife, everyone sustained minor injuries, but ultimately all five returned in one piece.
After tallying their loot, two hours of work yielded them 7 small pistols of average quality.
They also found a fishing net-style stab-resistant clothing. Due to its metal material, this piece of clothing weighed 10 kilograms, and while it could fully protect against the scratches of ordinary zombies in the covered areas, it was powerless against bites.
Additionally, they had 3 retractable batons, 3 cans of pepper spray, 3 pairs of handcuffs, a walkie-talkie, and over thirty .357 Magnum and 9mm pistol bullets.
Back at the base, Stone’s eyes lit up at the sight of the 7 pistols and he immediately said to Maya, "Arrange for a trip tomorrow. Take all the pistols to North Town and trade them for Skill Books."
Maya looked at Shana, and after she nodded, Maya continued, "So, Shana will go and..."
Snow Egg raised his hand, "I can accompany Shana on the trip."
Maya said, "Okay, then let’s leave it to Shana and Snow Egg."
Stone instructed, "To many people, handguns are still scarce commodities, so you can’t put all your stock out right from the start... Skill Books, trade for Skill Books, small handguns are trash to us. Lin Wu will handle the Night Demons during the day tomorrow, and tomorrow night we’ll continue flipping handguns, collecting resources, becoming rich, and dominating the whole server."
Everyone was silent, Lin Wu clapped, "Good, the boss speaks well, you can dismiss."
Stone chuckled, "It also shows that the future belongs to firearms."
Maya said, "I don’t agree with that view. Firearms have characteristics that cold weapons can’t surpass, but in the resource-scarce post-apocalypse, the role of cold weapons will not be less than that of firearms. Everyone has worked hard today, and many haven’t had their full five hours of sleep, so go and rest."
Shana raised her hand, "I’ve rested enough on the sickbed this afternoon."
Lin Wu stood up, "Then Shana will keep watch tonight, everyone else sleep."
Shana, seeing everyone standing up, questioned, "Am I the only one who has had enough sleep?"
Everyone nodded together.
Snow Egg said, "I’ll join you after I catch up on two hours of sleep."
"Wow," everyone cheered in unison.
Snow Egg blushed, "Go to sleep, everyone, off you go, off you go."
Stone walked past Shana, gave her a meaningful look, and without saying anything, headed towards the barracks.
Shana slapped her forehead, she certainly knew what Stone meant. Stone was unhappy because she, having joined the base for less than 24 hours, had already gotten involved in matters between men and women. She prided herself on her high emotional quotient, but now she was completely clueless, not knowing where she had provoked Snow Egg. She had spent the entire day with Lin Wu, so if anyone should feel provoked, it would have been Lin Wu. Lin Wu suddenly discovered his own beauty, his inner qualities, his temperament, his elegance...
...
Over the next few days, Lin Wu would get up every morning to run to the Sentry Card with Shana to check and eliminate Night Demons. Returning to the base, he would claim the Silencer and provide firepower support to the commercial street. Lin Wu discovered that playing with guns could be addictive; his favorite part wasn’t the moment of killing zombies, but rather when pulling the bolt to chamber a round, the mechanical sound that the gun made. The mechanical rhythm stimulated Lin Wu’s nerves, making it easier for him to focus during shooting.
Lin Wu wasn’t unreasonable, for the sake of the base’s safety, he spent most of his time firing blanks. Seeing Lin Wu’s interest in shooting, Maya instructed him in several standard shooting stances.
After nightfall, Lin Wu, Little Knife, and Maya would head to the Sentry Card to farm handguns. With each passing day, the drop rate of small handguns decreased. Through several days of trading, many players in North Town had acquired a handgun to their liking. Against this backdrop, when it was learned that the night shift had only brought back three small handguns, Stone called everyone for a campfire meeting.
