Chapter 569: Chapter 281 Unmanned Town_2
Maya couldn’t accept the intermediate plan mainly because: she had no value in it. Lin Wu could form an intermediate squad with just about anyone. She, on the other hand, needed Lin Wu to survive in an intermediate squad.
"Darn, two Titans at the crossroads of a small town." Lin Wu crouched, turning back to look at Maya.
Maya snapped back to reality and took out a map to check: "Past the Jade Store, turn onto 5th Street."
"Hey, perk up; I’m counting on you for moral support."
Maya said, "With your personality, you don’t need moral support."
Lin Wu said, "Nonsense, of course I do. You can shout: ’Lin Wu, you’re so handsome.’ and I would revive with full health."
Maya wanted to laugh and said, "Let’s go, enough with the chatter."
"Humph!" Turning left, they passed through the street and entered the narrow Jade Store, where two Frenzies were inside. Lin Wu pulled out a steak knife, licked the blade, and murmured, "Didn’t expect to get back to the old job." Huh? Seems like the knife just poked through a zombie.
A Wind Stinger move later, with a backhand stab from the left hand and a throat grab with the right, the knife fell swiftly, taking down a Frenzy. Throwing the Frenzy’s corpse to Maya, Lin Wu stayed close to the wall and called out to the Frenzy, "Hey."
The Frenzy turned, and Lin Wu had already Wind Stinger’ed over, doing another series of cuts. After finishing, Lin Wu took a watermelon knife from the Frenzy’s body, holding it out in front of him, and told Maya, "This is a good start."
Maya had to admit Lin Wu was right. Zombies could drop weapons, but the chances were very low, mostly dropping materials or items like Skill Books. There were rumors of someone finding bullets on zombies, but whether that was true remained a mystery.
The back half of the Jade Store had a few zombies. Maya took the watermelon knife and tested it out. Lacking swordsmanship and attribute enhancements, there was a huge gap in killing power. However, Maya performed much better than any newcomer, seeming to have learned from swordsmanship rather than relying solely on it. Each of her cuts was clean and efficient, a shame that they lacked Beheading chances, forcing her to continuously retreat in the face of the pressing zombies.
When facing the second zombie, thanks to her agility and tactical awareness, Maya dodged the zombie’s hands and struck its neck with each cut, quickly triggering the Sharp Blade’s exclusive Beheading execution.
Lin Wu sat to the side: "Good, Maya looks beautiful, Maya is so strong, yay."
Maya, her will to fight gone, said, "Let’s go."
Lin Wu asked, "Not cutting anymore?"
Maya: "Efficiency."
Lin Wu hopped off the counter and said, "Wait." He flipped over the counter to the cashier area, opened the slightly ajar cash register, and found a small safe with a keypad underneath.
Lin Wu said, "Are all the locals idiots?"
Maya explained, "The base exhausted all manpower and resources just to assemble that personal computer for you."
Struggling, Lin Wu lifted the small safe onto the counter, "What I mean is: didn’t they ever think of moving the safe?"
"Um..." How to respond to that? There’s still a mechanical safe at the church on the hill that can’t be opened.
Lin Wu realized, "You didn’t think of it either."
Instantly blushing, Maya kicked Lin Wu in the shin, frustrated and embarrassed: "Just open it."
Ten seconds later, Lin Wu flipped his left arm, letting Maya see the code. She reached out, entered the code, and opened the safe. Inside were two items. One was a Sniper Crossbow with very high damage and piercing capabilities. Its downside was a slow fire rate, and it used Sharp-tipped Crossbow Arrows.
There were two types of crossbow arrows. One was a cone-shaped lightweight arrow with a high recovery rate but short range. The other was a Sharp-tipped Heavy Crossbow Arrow, weighing approximately as much as four 7.62 bullets, with a low recovery rate and higher manufacturing cost, but the power and range were very strong, surpassing that of common handguns.
All crossbows were indestructible, and they were Silenced Weapons. The Sniper Crossbow came equipped with a rare four-times scope amongst crossbows.
The second item in the safe was naturally the crossbow arrows, a complete set in quivers, totaling two small quiver bags. Like a belt, they could be strapped to the waist, allowing placement on either the left or right side. Each small quiver bag could hold 15 arrows, and both were full.
Maya slung the Sniper Crossbow onto her backpack and wore a stylish quiver belt around her waist, exuding a wild charisma. Lin Wu looked on for a couple of seconds longer and, seeing Maya looking back at him, quickly explained, "Just looking closely, you look quite good. No, I mean, you’re beautiful, but today even more so."
"You talk too much, let’s go."
Lin Wu looked around, his voice quivering: "Is there anyone else here?"
Finally unable to restrain herself, Maya gave Lin Wu a knock on the head, and the struck Lin Wu obediently went on scouting.
The zombie density in the small town was very low, at least to the world-wise Lin Wu and Maya, it was no big deal. Hoping for a stroke of luck, the two of them carefully searched several shops and two houses, but didn’t find any System Items. However, they did find some salt and other condiments, and Maya casually took a rice cooker’s inner pot to use as a cooking pot.
Although these items had gone through enduring corrosion, they naturally had very long shelf lives and were hard to damage, so they were still usable.
Judging by the dust on the floor of the houses, it had been a long time since any player had set foot there.
Lin Wu said, "This house isn’t bad."
Maya objected: "No resources nearby, game is only found outside the town, the nearest water source is a kilometer away, and the house is on the edge of the Blood Mist."
