Chapter 550: Chapter 273: Hunting

After showering and mooching a meal from the Shadow Group hurriedly evacuated with a brightness value of 20 still remaining because no one wanted to deal with Night Demons. The Apocalypse People, however, decided to eat before showering even though it was scorchingly hot. The sea breezes and river winds clashed, bringing unbearably dry and hot air.

Fortunately, Peanut returned to the base safely, probably because Night Demons couldn’t be bothered to pick on a newcomer. Upon his return, he had only one word for it: "Hot."

During those 24 hours, Peanut stayed in a small villa, enjoying the air conditioning, feasting on roast beef, watching 3D TV, and playing virtual reality games—an endlessly delightful life. Peanut then shared his thoughts, "It’s so hot, I might as well die." Of course, he was joking; dying would mean losing points, and one more death might mean the loss of his TV. Another death after that, and he might even lose the villa.

Currently, no one knew how Dawn calculated points. Someone like Lin Wu, who considered himself to have a high score, had never died. Clever as Maya was, she couldn’t gather complete data either. However, judging from Peanut’s description, his points weren’t low.

The heat made everyone wilt. By 11 p.m., it had cooled down slightly, and everyone went back to their dorms to rest. Lin Wu didn’t know how long he had been asleep when he woke up drenched in sweat. Struggling out of bed, he went outside for some cool air and climbed atop the shipping container, where he lay motionless.

Soon enough, everyone else came up to sprawl out, clearly overwhelmed by the heat. Cotton somehow found a piece of cardboard and made himself a makeshift fan. But it wasn’t long before they all had to return to their dorms. Despite the Apocalypse People’s attention to cleanliness, the lack of NPC maintenance meant that mosquitos were inevitable, especially near the river.

Between dying from bites or the heat, everyone chose the heat. Lin Wu dozed off for a while, half out of his dorm to enjoy the natural breeze, then gave Wai an order. Wai hopped around Lin Wu’s head, bringing some wind on one side while shooing away mosquitos on the other.

After a restless night, everyone finally fell into a solid sleep around 4:30 a.m. The next morning at 9 a.m., they dragged their tired bodies out of bed, once again woken by the heat.

Seeing everyone in such a state, Maya said, "Everyone, go rest on the first floor."

And so, the Apocalypse People each took a blanket and pillow downstairs to the cooler first floor to rest. Maya was still in good spirits. Seeing the public channel silent, she guessed the Shadow Group had also had a rough night. She checked the command center and saw that the day’s high was set to exceed 42 degrees—a brutally tough day was in store. In this kind of weather, forget working—just staying inside was miserable.

To Maya’s surprise, Lin Wu, usually so lazy, volunteered to go hunting. Maya drove him to the lumberyard. Later, not wanting to be left behind as a newbie, Peanut decided to brave the scorching sun and go out to level up, mainly because the metal containers at the base were getting hotter. So, Maya had Cotton prepare lunch, and they all carried their meals down to the cooler sewers to scavenge while escaping the heat.

Whenever it felt too hot, they’d duck into the sewers. When the smell became unbearable, they’d come out to scavenge.

Speaking of Lin Wu, after he reached the lumberyard, he immediately went to the nearby waterfall with a lab. He plunged into the water, finding it blissfully cool. After getting out, he gathered wood in preparation for spending the night. With no one around, he stripped down to the waist. There was a house by the waterfall, and outside it was a rocking chair. Lin Wu enjoyed the cool breeze and felt carefree.

Why not call everyone over? One person slacking off is one thing, but you can’t stop the whole machine from working. Besides, Lin Wu was actually there to hunt. He set up three Beast Traps along the waterway formed by the waterfall. In weather this hot, wildlife would surely come to drink.

At two in the afternoon, one Beast Trap was triggered. Half-asleep, Lin Wu sent Wai out. Ten minutes went by, and when Wai didn’t return, Lin Wu went to check and found that the prey was a large wild boar, already dead from blood loss. Wai was stubbornly dragging it towards the waterfall, but due to the terrain, the boar was stuck and couldn’t be moved.

"Idiot," Lin Wu told Wai to step aside. He then butchered the boar on the spot, obtaining a boar hide and ten kilograms of meat. See, his hunting was paying off. And if there hadn’t been a boar? Well, there was always Wai—not to eat, of course, but to falsely accuse of eating the prey.

After lying down again, it wasn’t long before another trap was triggered, and a muttered Lin Wu resentfully sent out Wai. Scolded as an idiot, Wai’s intelligence seemed to skyrocket, bringing back half a rabbit. The Beast Trap was too powerful, and with Wai’s dragging, only half remained. After collecting 0.2 kilograms of rabbit meat, Lin Wu hesitated for a long time before finally resetting the traps and harvesting another 0.2.

Soon, another pesky prey was caught, and a cursing Lin Wu headed out with his gun. This time the prey was a deer, yielding 5 kilograms of meat. Back at the site, Lin Wu started making soup. The small pot was brought from the base and was originally intended to boil water for tea.

After a satisfying meal and resting for a little over an hour, and cutting another 0.3 kilograms of rabbit meat, Lin Wu called Maya and descended the mountain leisurely with Wai. Why abandon the idea of staying the night? Not to mention that, as sunset approached and the shadows deepened with the temperature dropping, the mosquito army would launch an assault—and these were the kind of mosquitoes that could torment you for two days with a single bite.

Maya was thrilled to see such bounty from the hunt, and she called the Shadow Group to join them at Doomsday Fortress for meat soup, followed by the usual shower and meal routine. Everyone seemed to gradually adapt to the high temperatures, no longer preoccupied with the heat. They even began hosting a night of Mahjong.
