Chapter 543: Chapter 270: Nightmare Revisited_2
Lin Wu asked, "Going to such lengths? What could the mission be?"
Shana propped her cheek with her hand, gazing up at the sky, "Keep following and you’ll find out."
Lin Wu said, "We’re going outside the range."
Shana replied, "No worries, use your imagination and keep up."
Lin Wu muttered, "A merchant? I wonder if it’s a Fortress Merchant."
Shana immediately sat up straight, "Really?"
"Don’t know, about six kilometers away, at the edge of Shuixi Bridge in Left County," Lin Wu said. "Nightmare took a left turn while driving, escaped using the same method, abandoned the car, and moved to several old wooden boxes filled with fruits 30 meters away from the bridgehead. She periodically pokes her head out and takes aim at the merchant with a gun. The merchant just sits on the curb at the bridgehead, with a large backpack in front of him."
Zombies ignored the merchant, and the merchant likewise ignored the zombies; the two coexisted peacefully. For a moment, Lin Wu thought this might be a zombie merchant whose customers were zombies. Of course, Lin Wu had to file a complaint about this, having nothing better to do. Little White Rabbit’s explanation was that the merchant had taken a high-grade Concealment Medicine. Lin Wu inquired about the details of the high-grade Concealment Medicine. Little White Rabbit told him to mind his own business. Naturally, Little White Rabbit didn’t phrase it that way, but that’s what it meant in Lin Wu’s understanding.
Twenty minutes later, a pickup truck drove in from Shuidong. The sight of the vehicle knocking zombies aside left Lin Wu dumbstruck; as he was about to complain again, he finally caught on. It turns out the pickup uses its doors, not its front, to hit zombies. As the truck passed by zombies, either the driver or the passenger would open the door, knocking the zombies away or even killing them.
When the truck neared the bridgehead, three Alliance NPCs alighted, wielding silenced assault rifles and began a killing spree. After clearing nearby zombies, they aimed their guns at the merchant and began shouting something at him. One NPC reached for the merchant’s backpack, and the merchant fought back.
That’s when Nightmare made her move, firing rapidly and blowing one NPC’s head off. The other two NPCs were highly alert, each taking cover to the left and right and starting a shootout about 30 meters apart. A grenade thrown near Nightmare exploded, attracting nearby zombies to swarm her. Nightmare moved to the side of the cover, circled to the back of a building, and headed towards the bridgehead.
About 10 meters in, Nightmare took cover behind an abandoned van, with the two NPCs continuously changing positions and firing towards the van to suppress Nightmare’s movements.
Nightmare stuck a monitor on the vehicle’s front, aiming the lens at the NPCs. She moved from the front to the rear of the van, crouching by the tire, and watched the screen placed on the ground. Taking advantage of her opportunity, she popped up just enough to shoot one NPC dead. With the help of the monitor, she quickly took down the second NPC.
Crouching low, Nightmare crossed the open ground to the bridgehead, staying alert as she looted corpses. After acquiring the rifle, she removed some of its attachments and ammunition, and casually tossed the rifle body into the Left County River.
Once done, Nightmare squatted beside the merchant. It was unclear what they talked about or what they traded. About a minute later, Nightmare left with half a pair of glasses, something unidentifiable. This thing had little to do with glasses; it resembled a headset that could hang on top of her head or on both ears. The core was a transparent glass piece that hung over Nightmare’s left eye. She pushed with a finger to retract the glass, and pulled it down to set it in place.
It looked incredibly cool, and Lin Wu couldn’t help but feel envious.
From Maya, he learned that this was a Squad tactical system. The so-called glass piece was a display that connected to special devices such as radars, thermal sensors, monitors, etc. With the display, Nightmare could see images and information sent by the devices, giving her an understanding of the situation between her and her enemies.
Maya and Shana established contact and were fairly certain that the NPC merchant at the bridgehead was the wandering merchant they were looking for. Maya had intended to contact Nightmare for assistance, but Nightmare hadn’t returned to the temporary base, leaving her unable to reach Nightmare.
Nightmare could use repair kits to blow up vehicles along the way, fighting through with gunfire to reach the merchant’s side. Shadow certainly had enough resources to send players to the bridgehead in a similar manner. However, Nightmare knew what her gains would be, whereas Shadow would need to bet on the low probability of profit. Therefore, they couldn’t possibly adopt Nightmare’s approach.
...
Lin Wu drove to pick up Maya at the Sawmill. The two Deputy Commanders grabbed the System Map and self-drawn maps to start a meeting at the conference table. They needed to find a safe route that didn’t consume too much in resources and could reach the bridgehead. Shadow’s advantage lay in timing; basing on the details from Lin Wu’s complaints and drone surveillance, the Fortress Merchant wouldn’t leave the bridgehead anytime soon and was very likely to stay there for up to 12 hours.
"Taking the sewer will only get us this far; we’ll have to walk two kilometers to reach the bridgehead. The difficulty and risk of walking two kilometers in the city are too high."
Shana said, "We could take the sewer to here, then float down the Left County River and get ashore near the bridgehead."
Maya asked, "How do we return, then?"
Shana explained, "Take an armored vehicle there? It’s a straight line of six kilometers, eight kilometers by road, making a round trip of 16 kilometers, consuming roughly ten liters of fuel."
Maya replied, "It’s not about the fuel; there is no safe zone nearby to park. As soon as we park, zombies from all around will swarm us, and if there’s an Exploding Carnage among them, everyone will be suffocated inside the armored vehicle."
