Chapter 518: Chapter 260: Water-Avoiding Base
Lin Wu switched to the public channel, "Old Man, have you drowned yet?"
Stone said, "Even if you die, I won’t die."
Lin Wu laughed heartily, "Little Knife, go and kill him right now, and I’ll give you two Snow Eggs."
Little Knife replied, "I don’t want that."
Lin Wu asked, "You don’t want two Snow Eggs, don’t want the Snow Eggs, or don’t want to kill Stone?"
Little Knife huffed, "If I say kill Stone, you’ll say I’m not satisfied with one Snow Egg. If I say I don’t want two Snow Eggs, you’ll say I don’t even want two Snow Eggs for Stone’s sake. I won’t fall for that."
Peanut chimed in, "Well said, a round of applause!"
There were few responders, to which Lin Wu said, "Brothers and sisters, let’s play mahjong together. Let’s play a round of credit mahjong."
"What do you mean?"
Lin Wu explained, "Everyone plays from their own dormitory, through the headset. Each person with their own set of mahjong tiles."
Shana questioned, "Playing by oneself?"
Lin Wu answered, "Exactly, that’s credit mahjong for you, whoever lies is a scoundrel."
Shana commented, "But, but won’t that be chaotic?"
Stone said, "I think it’s worth a try."
And so, the first twelve-person mahjong tournament of Shadow commenced.
Stone declared, "Five of Bams."
Maya announced, "I’ll chow."
Cotton interjected, "Stop right there, I pung."
"Stop right there, I’ve got a Kong, and Kong beats all." Drawing a tile, Five of Bams, Peanut claimed, "Add-on Kong, birdie."
Lin Wu said, "Any pungs? If not, I’m drawing... Five of Bams!"
Cotton said, "I pung."
Shana announced, "I have a Kong, I’m the biggest."
Cotton went berserk, "How come there’s another Kong?" It was infuriating.
Each person wrote down their play order on a piece of paper, and strictly required themselves not to peek or cheat, sitting alone in their dormitories. Without playing it seemed nonsensical, but once they played, it turned out to be quite interesting, and the first day of the typhoon passed in relaxed and enjoyable spirits.
...
The wind was a little weaker the next day, but the rain kept pouring down non-stop, and the water in the first floor of the Doomsday Fortress had already reached one meter deep. It wasn’t that the flood discharge measures were inadequate, but rather the river water had surged back. The seawall road was about 50 centimeters higher than the first floor, which was now completely submerged by the river water. The base’s only pickup truck had half of its body submerged in water. Fortunately, the system only calculated damage, not water soaking.
The sawmill of Shadow rose up towards the north, and where the ground was higher, the floods flowed downwards, pouring into the sawmill. Plus, with the river behind the south gate swelling up, the entire base was completely submerged. The water level was at 1.3 meters, already flooding the first floor of the dormitories and leaving only 20 centimeters to the beds on the second floor.
The troubling thing was that Shadow had no means of flood discharge, as the surrounding industrial areas were all submerged. Early in the morning, as instructed by Stone, Su Shi made a small boat and two oars out of wood and relied on the boat to paddle around the base. The boat attracted everyone’s interest, and they all lined up to take turns rowing.
The most discomforting thing for the players during the flooding was their clothes. They only changed into dry clothes on their own beds, and had to put on wet clothes when leaving the bed, always keeping one set of dry clothes for themselves. After all, as capable as NPCs were, they couldn’t dry clothes in such weather.
Watching Snow Egg and Little Knife happily rowing, Horse Soul and Starlight started fishing, but hardly any fish took the bait. In the apocalypse, without farmers to raise fish, floods couldn’t breach the fishponds, and naturally, there weren’t that many fish around.
Shana called out, "Hey, hey. Don’t go out." When she saw Little Knife and Snow Egg rowing towards the edge of the safe zone, she immediately spoke up to stop them. Once swept away by the current, it was basically impossible to find them again. Looking around, only the base’s safe zone had still water.
Stone waded over to Shana and said, "You go and take over the Meteorological Station for a sub-base, give everyone a break, at the very least dry our clothes." The Meteorological Station was on the slope north of the sawmill, very close by, but due to the elevation difference, there was no flooding.
Shana said, "That would require five people."
"Forget the research for now, handle the morale first."
Shana nodded, calling the field team to work, easily taking control of the Meteorological Station. Then the two bases formed an alliance, allowing everyone to rest at the Meteorological Station. Although they had no dedicated NPCs, they could light fires and dry clothes. Horse Soul also brought over some ingredients and cooked a big pot of mixed hotpot in the Meteorological Station’s living room.
The morale was stabilized, but there wasn’t much food left. Today was the last working day of the week for NPCs; both bases decided to temporarily forgo hiring NPCs, dealing with personal clothing issues themselves.
The cofferdam of the Doomsday Fortress was still there. Although the flood was fierce, it couldn’t raise the sea level by even a centimeter. However, the floodwater could cover the tidal flats during low tide.
The cofferdam was located near the warehouse area. Normally, during low tide, Left County River water would flow into the sea through the river channel by the tidal flats. Now, low tide didn’t bring down the water. Under the relentless flood, it was impossible to catch fish through the cofferdam.
Maya stood atop the container at the highest level for a long while before silently returning to her own dormitory. Lin Wu, sitting at the dormitory entrance, saw this scene and connected with Maya, "I’ll go up the mountain to take a look." He knew she was worried about the food situation.
Maya said, "During the rainstorm, wild animals will stay in their dens. I just spoke with Shana, and with two fields flooded, food has become a major issue. The situation is still fine for now, but if it continues like this for over five days, we’ll have to start reducing rations. And then, we’ll only be left with staples."
Maya continued, "I’m considering using the Universal Card to establish a ranch at the Doomsday Fortress. But first, we need to expand the base. After a month of effort, we’re still short of a hundred building materials."
Lin Wu said, "Shadow has a lot of building materials."
