Chapter 501: Chapter 254: Bulk Goods
Other people stayed away from the small iron door, gathering together with weapons ready to fight against the zombie tide. Lin Wu took a deep breath, pulled open the small iron door, and waited behind it for a while. Hearing nothing, he peeked into the warehouse.
As mentioned before, warehouse 307 was built on the shore and was a separate structure. The area of this warehouse was about one hundred and fifty square meters, without any zombies inside, it was empty. The only supplies were at the deep end of the building, near the southeastern and northeastern corners of the wall, covered by army green tarps, unclear what they were.
"Stop," Maya called to a halt, pointing, "This must be the anti-theft device."
The warehouse was close to rectangular, and there was a pillar every 20 meters or so inside the warehouse. On the pillars against the wall, there was a toy train track where something was moving up and down.
Lin Wu had seen these things in movies before: "Lasers, infrared, black sonar lines, visible light lines, and so on."
Why didn’t he see any defense turrets? Maybe there were, but they weren’t needed, as the alarm went off, the whole dock’s zombies would know it’s lunchtime.
"Seems simple," Peanut said. The radiators moved at a speed that was not slow, but also not fast, and they could just crawl through.
"Observe carefully," Maya said.
Peanut approached the first pillar, "From what I remember, a small device emits a light beam that hits other devices. If an object interrupts the beam, it triggers an alarm. But the opposite pillar has the same three radiators, and they are moving up and down."
"Right, not a straight line. The owner of the anti-theft device wants thieves to gamble," Maya explained. "A emitter on pillar A might connect the beam to any one of the three receivers on pillar B. That’s one possibility, and another possibility is that pillar B is the actual emitter and pillar A has the receivers."
"Why don’t we just crawl over when pillar A’s emitter moves up?" Lin Wu said.
"Most thieves probably think that way," Maya squatted down, pointing to the bottom of pillar A.
Lin Wu looked carefully and saw a brown stain on pillar A about 20 centimeters off the ground, looking as though someone had dirtied it with half a shoe heel.
Pointing at the stain, Maya said, "That’s the actual receiver, picking up a signal from one of pillar B’s emitters. You guys step back."
The three stepped back, and Cotton guarded the door. After taking a deep breath, Maya crossed over the stain when pillar A’s emitter moved up, successfully passing the first challenge.
In the earpiece, Maya said, "Their anti-theft measures are very simple, just a few tracks stuck on the wall, very easy to disassemble."
No response was heard, and turning her head, she saw Lin Wu talking to the air, obviously complaining yet again. His complaint was about the emitters needing batteries, which he presumed should have run out by now. Of course, Lin Wu was wrong; Little White Rabbit explained that each pillar had a socket, and the track was connected to a power source.
Why was there power? Because it was on the same circuit as the street lights.
Without maintenance, there should be no street lights. Little White Rabbit told Lin Wu that, taking Hoover Dam as an example, even if all personnel evacuated, the system could run automatically for at least several years.
Then why was there no power inside the building? Little White Rabbit explained the power grid allocation system, and some electricity came from thermal power plants. When there was a shortfall in electricity, the system would automatically cut off lower priority users. Street lights played an important role in maintaining urban order, and especially could stabilize people’s hearts during a citywide blackout, so they had higher priority and didn’t experience blackouts.
Maya threw a coin at Lin Wu’s head, causing him to stop his complaints and wave Little White Rabbit away. She instructed everyone to be cautious, as she was unclear what might happen if they triggered an alarm. As it turned out, Maya’s worries were unnecessary; she carefully analyzed and observed each security trap, managing to reach the end smoothly.
On either side of her, there were piles of supplies covered with tarps.
When Maya pulled away the tarp on the left, everyone was stunned, even Maya, who usually didn’t show her emotions, had stars twinkling in her eyes.
A brand new tracked armored personnel carrier, equipped with one semi-protected .50 caliber heavy machine gun, weighing 12 tons, with a standard crew of 12 people.
This is what you call heavy weaponry. Although it’s just a younger brother in the heavy weaponry family, it’s still heavy weaponry. Zombies, Dawn, all carbon-based life forms were nothing in front of it.
There were only two problems: the fuel tank was empty, and the machine gun had no bullets.
Maya took a deep breath and pulled away the other tarp, revealing a boat. The boat had wheels underneath, allowing it to be pushed out to sea.
A small military port tugboat, 5.8 meters long, 3 meters wide, with a draught of 1.5 meters and weighing 10 tons.
Downside: The fuel tank was empty.
After Maya entered the cabin to explain the data, the scene was extremely quiet, no one uttered a word. These weren’t just heavy weapons; they were two daddies, lords of fuel, dual overlords.
The armored vehicle, with a fuel consumption of 60 liters per 100 kilometers, could travel three kilometers on a 5-liter can of fuel. Not even two cans of fuel would get it to the Cozy Cabin.
The tugboat, with a fuel consumption of 60 liters per hour, could run for five minutes on a can of fuel.
Of course, these were great items, but should they really invite these two overlords home? Sitting on the armored vehicle, Maya was momentarily undecided.
Lin Wu spoke up, "Drive the armored vehicle first, then the boat."
"Why?" Peanut asked.
"The armored vehicle can ram through the big roller shutter doors," Lin Wu said.
Maya, lost for words, said, "The issue is not how to get them back, it’s whether we should take them back at all."
