Chapter 499: Chapter 253 Daily Life

Shana Team successfully brought back a laundry NPC. Before deciding, Shana asked Stone which type of NPC should be chosen. Stone let Shana decide, and since she believed being clean and tidy was important, she went for the laundry NPC. Lin Wu suggested naming her Xiao Xi.

Shana Team safely returned to base, and the Apocalypse People also felt relieved and headed home. Maya started the vehicle, and Lin Wu, who was in the passenger seat, had a sudden thought and said, "Wait."

He got out of the car and jogged to Stone: "Not enough fuel." He quickly brought two barrels of oil back, passing Stone again, and filled up the pickup truck with both barrels.

Lin Wu, carrying two empty barrels, ran back: "Here are your barrels back." Everyone knew oil was not valuable; what really mattered were the barrels.

Soon, Lin Wu ran past again with two barrels of oil: "Goodnight."

Stone stamped his feet in frustration: "Is this an outright robbery?" Wasn’t this over yet?

Lin Wu placed the barrels in the passenger seat: "Just wait, I have to show Stone what an outright robbery really is." He ran to get two more barrels of oil, sneaked past Stone with a cool jog, and successfully jumped into the car through the passenger window without even opening the door, sitting down steadily and coolly flashing a peace sign: "Bye-bye."

Stone cursed as the pickup truck drove away.

Seeing such childish behavior, Maya, the driver, could only sigh. She knew no one would care about taking oil, so why provoke them? Of course, Stone was also childish, fully aware of Lin Wu’s immaturity, yet he engaged in the pettiness all the same.

Maya turned to look at Lin Wu: "Are you alright?"

Lin Wu shook his head painfully, grabbing the oil barrels from the seat. He had looked cool with his actions, but he had forgotten about the barrels on the seat. Sitting on the barrels had taught his glutes and tailbone a tough lesson. The real pain was deciding whether to take painkillers or not; taking them seemed wasteful, as the pain might subside soon. But not taking them meant enduring real pain.

In a joking mood, the car reached Highway 99 and drove about two hundred meters before coming to a slight bend. Then, going at a speed of 90 kilometers per hour, Maya suddenly braked harshly. None of the four people inside had their seat belts on, and as the sharp screech of the brakes and their screamed filled the air, they were all thrown forward.

Cotton was tossed to the passenger seat, Lin Wu smashed into the windshield causing the whole thing to fall out, and Peanut’s head collided with the center console. Maya fared the best as her head helped Lin Wu smash the front windshield.

Why the sudden braking? Because there was an Exploding Carnage lying across the road. Other zombies could be run over, but Exploding Carnage was different. If hit, the car would fill with poison gas, and there’d be no time to wait for the driver to stop the vehicle; one would have to jump out immediately, or life would instantly be over. Since the update removed the health bar, it hadn’t been tested how long it would take to be poisoned to death, but it was clear that Maya’s braking was the right move.

Lin Wu rolled off the hood, holding a Silent Night revolver, and shot the Exploding Carnage in the head. Like a deflated balloon, it was soon reduced to nothing but skin.

Isn’t Dawn just the worst? After the update, the Shadow Group was driving on Highway 99 and rarely saw any zombies. Not only did they encounter one that evening, but it was also the deadliest kind: an Exploding Carnage. Even more infuriating was the fact that the Exploding Carnage was placed on a curve, exploiting the blind spot of the car’s headlights to teach the four people a harsh lesson.

Maya: "Broken left hand."

Lin Wu: "Broken ribs."

Peanut: "Broken skull."

Cotton: "I’m fine."

Maya: "Cotton, you drive. Take us back to the Sawmill." Long-range healing took twice as long; since they were only a few hundred meters away, it was better to go back to the infirmary for treatment.

At the Sawmill, Stone began to feel sleep, and was just about to head back to the dormitory to sleep when he heard a car horn. Who was risking their life like this? So, he went out the north gate to see, and spotted a pickup truck leaving the road, barreling down the ramp without slowing down, heading straight for him. Stone could even hear the roaring screams from inside the car.

"Hit the brakes."

"Which one?"

"Hit the brakes."

"Which one?"

Using all his skills, Stone performed a backflip into the building. The next second, the pickup truck crashed heavily into the north gate, Lin Wu flew out from the passenger seat, and slid several meters clutching Stone.

Before they had a chance to curse, Peanut shouted, "It’s on fire!"

The scene was chaotic, with the shocked Cotton at a loss for what to do. Unable to open the doors, Lin Wu and Stone each grabbed Cotton by the shoulders of her clothes and yanked her out through the car window. Maya and Peanut, who were already out of the car, were preparing to check on Cotton when suddenly there was a burst of flames inside the vehicle. The fire ignited the oil barrels, and everyone scrambled to escape.

Members of the Shadow Group emerged from their dorms upon hearing the commotion and made it to the doors of the factory just in time to see a bright explosion and parts flying everywhere. Thankfully, the pickup’s shell remained intact, awaiting repairs by players.

In addition to the flying parts, flames were shooting in all directions. Lin Wu, Peanut, and Stone caught fire and rolled on the ground to put it out.

Stone: "Damn it, carrying so much gasoline, was that fun?"

Lin Wu rolled toward him and used his foot to help put out Stone’s flames: "Can’t burn you to death."

Shana urgently said, "Don’t roll around, the oil depot is right there."

With no fire extinguisher at hand, everyone took off their clothes and started to beat out the flames. During this, Lin Wu felt someone deliberately kicking his behind. Turning his head, he saw Shana with a beaming smile, which she quickly replaced with a serious look, but not before kicking Lin Wu in the rear one more time.

What followed was an emergency rescue. The infirmary was just next door, and the doctor was on the scene; after some chaos, the situation finally stabilized.
