Chapter 479: Chapter 245 Doomsday Fortress_2

...

Last night we occupied the container dock, and today we had the meeting, personnel arrangements, and formed alliances. By the time everything was busy, it was already evening. Considering that tomorrow is the end-of-season activity day, Maya declared it a free activity day and didn’t assign any work to everyone.

Peanut blew a whistle from the lookout post, and Lin Wu looked up to see Peanut waving. Lin Wu wondered, Can’t you speak in the headset? Still, he packed up the tennis ball and ended the fun with Wai, then headed to the post.

Lin Wu took the metal stairs to the second level, climbed the container’s built-in straight ladder to the third level, and then took the spiral staircase to reach the post. In contrast to the plain layout of the Sawmill, the containers were like a Rubik’s cube in three dimensions. To be blunt, it was just plain ugly. Moreover, both the first floor passageways and the second floor Corridor Bridge were very narrow. If two people wanted to pass by without turning sideways, they would inevitably bump into each another.

Of course, everyone had manners, and both sides would turn sideways to let the other pass.

Compared to the open Sawmill, the Doomsday Fortress offered a completely different experience.

Standing on the ground floor of the containers and looking up gave one the feeling of being in a prison. Looking down from the second floor felt oppressive. Looking up, on the other hand, one could see a vast expanse of sky that was comforting. Looking straight ahead was also good—it was orderly and square, perfect for someone with OCD.

The third floor was yet another experience. Although the third level was just a simple layout of containers in the shape of the letter ’U,’ looking down one could see the river and the sea, and looking up was an unbounded view. When Lin Wu climbed the 15-meter-high lookout, he truly understood the desire to "extend one’s view for thousands of miles." He wished he could be even higher to see even further.

Lin Wu approached Peanut, "What’s up?"

Peanut handed over the monocular telescope to Lin Wu, "See the Happy Bar in the living area?"

"Yeah." The living area was vast, with a dock road outside and fairly wide roads inside. This district had hotels, eateries, office buildings, residential areas, and more. The Happy Bar was located inside a three-story standalone building on Dock Road Two, and the bar’s sign was highly conspicuous on the rooftop.

Peanut said, "There’s a small boat across from the Happy Bar."

"I see it." It was a white boat with two wheels underneath, towed to an outdoor parking lot outside the hotel by a scrapped SUV. Lin Wu put down the telescope, "Never mind the difficulty of driving into the zombie tide and towing the boat. The thing is, it’s just a boat."

Lin Wu explained his point, "As far as I know, this type of boat usually comes with a propeller drive. But during transportation, they separate the hull from the drive unit."

Dashuang, also at the post, asked, "Can’t we call for artillery support? Wipe out the zombies and then take the boat?" If you’re poor, you dodge left and right; if you’re rich, you cover with firepower.

Lin Wu, "No good. First reason, it’s ineffective. A lot of shells would just land on buildings, unable to bypass them and hit the ground directly. Second reason, I can’t throw the smoke grenade to the designated spot. Forget about it, we can’t handle this boat."

Peanut sighed, "I know it’s not doable, but I just want a boat."

Lin Wu consoled him, "You’ll get one eventually. But why do you want a boat? Want to go wandering on the sea?"

Peanut replied, "No, once we get a boat, we can follow the Left County River upstream and scavenge for supplies as we go. If we’re cornered by zombies, we just jump into the river. Plus, look, there’s a lighthouse far out in the sea; I want to check it out." Zombies don’t exist in rivers or seas deeper than two meters—a gameplay mechanic.

The first objective was quite appealing to Lin Wu. There were many zombies in Left County city, and zombie hordes were everywhere. One of the safe passages was the underground tunnel, but it took a long time to go through the tunnel and back, and now no one in Shadow was willing to take on Bounty Hunter missions. The other was Left County River. The main channel of the river divided Left County into Shuixi and Shuidong. If they could use a boat and then pass through the drainage outlets connecting the underground tunnels, a trip to the Bounty Hunter Hall would probably take only about ten minutes.

But Lin Wu knew these were just excuses; Peanut simply wanted to sail a boat. This piqued Lin Wu’s curiosity, and he asked a few more questions. It turned out that after graduating from college, Peanut, in pursuit of high pay, had become a worker on an offshore drilling rig. Whenever he stood alone on the bridge looking out to sea, he felt the urge to sail out for a spin. Unfortunately, the drilling platforms only had lifeboats, which could only be used in emergencies. After working eight months with four off, and being transported to and from work by helicopter, he never got the chance to handle a boat. Now seeing the sea again rekindled his desire to go sailing.

Lin Wu went down to the second-floor command center and sat down to brew tea. Watching Maya busy with her duties, he mentioned Peanut’s situation. Maya answered, "Not possible, at least not now."

Lin Wu, "You don’t ask why he wants to sail out to sea?"

"Everyone has their own reasons for doing things," Maya stopped her hands and looked at Lin Wu, "I’ll keep it in mind, and I will work on getting a boat if there’s a chance. But I have a question, when did you become so caring?"

Lin Wu leaned back in his chair, legs propped up on the command center’s table, and said, "When I was a kid, I used to lie on the grass and watch the clouds, finding shapes in their shifting forms. I always had this image in my mind where I would pilot a supersonic airplane through the clouds, leaving a straight trail and a trail of white smoke. That was when I dreamed of becoming a pilot, even if just to dust crops."
