Chapter 442: Chapter 230: The Mountaineering Team

At eight in the evening, the command center had already lost contact with Shana’s squad. That’s the downside of simulation; the game data mentions five kilometers without a discount, but with simulation, you have to consider terrain and magnetic fields and such. Luckily drones weren’t restricted, and from a distance, they saw Shana’s squad setting up camp at the base of Husband Waiting Cliff. The campfire had already been lit, and the three of them were gathering firewood.

At the same time, the base’s people also used their spare time to stockpile wood. They took advantage of the spring refresh rules and chopped more logs from the parking lots on both sides of the base. After all, only ghosts knew what would happen in summer.

Stone and Maya were taking inventory of the base’s supplies, considering the worst possible simulation scenarios. First was food, and because they had the beach and the farm as two major food sources, there wasn’t much of a problem. Next was medicine, which meant they needed to urge Little Knife to gather more herbs. The water source wasn’t an issue either, there was a stream behind the back door, and they could make water purification tablets through the medical office.

Although ammunition was scarce, it was more than enough for self-defense unless they decided to cancel the base’s unlimited ammunition. If they were to cancel unlimited ammo, they’d have to do away with the noise threat system and siege system as well. The real trouble was gasoline. For players, gasoline was a non-renewable resource; apart from Invincible Base, which increased gasoline daily, or having high-level skills to increase it, once you used some, you had less.

If there was no gasoline, it meant the players’ range of activity would be reduced, and eventually, they could only be trapped in the base. Looking at the base’s pickup trucks like Overlord and others, not one was fuel-efficient.

Su Shi, who was passing by, rarely joined the discussion with the two leaders: "We need basic materials."

"Why?"

Su Shi said, "The Sawmill has gates on the northeast, southwest, and northwest sides, just gates, while other places use iron fences. According to the system, these fences are part of Invincible structures. If we enter a simulation system, the fences will definitely be damaged and will need materials for repairs."

Maya added, "Our base is very large, and the larger the base, the more fencing area we need to repair."

Stone asked, "Besides the basic materials, do you have any other suggestions?"

Su Shi said, "The east and west parking lots are piled with lots of logs; we can take the logs ourselves to make ground stakes and arrange them as fences. This would strengthen the wire fences."

Stone had a bit of a headache: "It’s a big project."

Maya said, "Alternatively, we could use vehicles. Parking them outside all the fences could block zombie impacts apart from those of Titan and Frenzy."

Lin Wu floated by: "Or we could change bases."

Stone and Maya glanced at each other. Lin Wu quickly floated back: "I’m just joking." Don’t take it seriously.

Maya pulled out the map of Left County, pointing at the base of the fire department on the south side of Left County: "If you head east from the fire department, you can reach North City. Right County also allows you to reach North City if you head west."

Stone pointed to some buildings on the map’s edge and asked, "What is this place?"

Maya said, "It’s not marked, so it should belong to the North City system. From the geographical location, it looks like a commercial port. I believe that Left County River empties into the sea from here."

"Folks, we’ve only been at the Sawmill for a little over a month." Lin Wu didn’t want to move homes. To move to the Sawmill, Shadow had countless meetings and conducted four reconnaissance missions. They only stayed at the mountaintop church for six months, so the Sawmill deserved at least a year.

Stone said, "You country bumpkin know nothing. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket; always have a backup plan for the corporation."

Lin Wu retorted, "Aren’t you capitalists the ones who love leveraging the most?"

Stone said, "There’s a difference between corporations and capital. Capital is about profits—corporate survival doesn’t concern them. But a corporation must take a diversified approach to survive." For instance, a factory with a thousand workers only makes components for one major brand. Logically, if they strive for perfection, they should thrive. But what if the major brand goes under? Like Nokia, like Kodak. However, if that factory had multiple lines of business while working with Nokia, they could shift focus to other businesses when Nokia fails. They might not live as comfortably, but they’d at least survive.

Maya agreed with Stone’s view, saying, "We don’t know the extent of the simulation, nor can we predict the changes. Therefore, we must have a backup plan. Finding a base to which we can retreat and where we can settle is something we should do."

Maya indicated on the map: "Take the 99 highway for 10 kilometers and go down the ramp, you can get to North City Road, then drive another 10 plus kilometers to reach the edge of the map. Look at this railway track, it goes straight to the edge of the map, which is what I believe to be the North City port. Goods from the industrial area are transported to the port and then shipped out to the world by sea. It makes sense."

Lin Wu said, "I think taking the highway isn’t bad." As a next best option, please don’t even think about walking along the railroad tracks to the port.

Maya stared at the 99 highway for a long time, then pointed on the table: "From here, the drones should be able to fly to the port."

Lin Wu reminded, "Sis, that’s the table, you’ve gone beyond the edge of the map. The road is your imagination, right?"

Maya looked at Lin Wu and asked, "Did you forget that the 99 highway has a traffic map?"

Lin Wu remembered; a traffic map was erected along the 99 highway, 250 kilometers away was a small town named Laimeng. Lin Wu countered, "What if the road is winding?"

Maya: "Then we straighten it out. You go back to the guard post at the Meteorological Station Base and keep an eye on Shana and the others."

Lin Wu: "Even if they get carried away by wild beasts, we can’t help them." Watching or not, the result is the same.
