Chapter 436: Chapter 227 Blood Battle_2
Lin Wu: "Now."
Maya stood up, aimed and fired the rocket launcher. The rocket propelled a trail of blue smoke and struck the engine of the first vehicle. It didn’t flip over and shatter into pieces as Lin Wu had expected; instead, the blast tore a large hole in the front of the vehicle, scattering countless fragments of parts all around.
Soldiers from all three vehicles jumped out simultaneously. Maya immediately retreated, drawing the soldiers from the first vehicle in pursuit. Nightmare, positioned on the flank, stood and fired repeatedly, bringing down one soldier. A soldier on the bridge hit Nightmare. She quickly crouched behind cover and wrapped herself with a bandage.
Real injuries, whether bleeding can be stopped or not depends on the type of damage the bullet causes.
Fighting with NPCs simulating real humans, Lin Wu realized the difficulty of making headshots; almost no NPC would keep their head still for more than a second. After missing the first shot, Lin Wu’s second shot hit a soldier in the chest. The soldier, wearing a bulletproof vest, was knocked down but not injured. Lin Wu promptly switched to Forest Wolf.
Five soldiers at the head of the bridge advanced towards the western parking lot behind cover, while more than a dozen soldiers on the bridge relied on the guardrail to exchange fire with Peanut and others from 50 meters away. For a time, gunfire roared, and bullets flew in all directions.
Neither Lin Wu nor his companions had ever experienced such a scene, feeling both fear and excitement. The fear came from not knowing if a bullet would hit them the next second; the excitement was that it was almost indistinguishable from a real battle.
Maya struggled to suppress the firepower from the bridge and heard a soldier yell, "Sniper at 10 o’clock."
A soldier ran towards a truck and pulled a rocket launcher from the back of it.
Maya shouted, "Lin Wu, get away from your post immediately."
"Why?" Lin Wu spotted the soldier with the rocket launcher, the crosshair moving constantly. As long as the soldier stopped to take a shot at him, he was confident he could take him out first.
Then Lin Wu saw a streak of blue smoke flying towards him. Reacting instinctively, he dodged as the rocket whizzed past his ear and through the post. Losing his nerve, Lin Wu quickly shouldered his rifle and spotted the target soldier just as he fired another rocket. Lin Wu grabbed the rope on the post and jumped out. The next second, the post exploded into the air, scattering wooden debris everywhere.
Lin Wu crashed to the ground. Wai ran over to check on his owner. Lin Wu immediately said, "Go back to the dorm and don’t come out."
Lin Wu had landed on the Meteorological Station’s rooftop. Feeling no significant issues with his body, he took a step towards the edge of the roof. Then, a searing pain shot through his right foot, causing Lin Wu to cry out in agony and fall to the ground.
Maya: "What’s wrong?"
Lin Wu first took painkillers. "Either my leg’s broken, or it’s sprained." After the medical update, the system humanely preserved the effect of painkillers. Having taken the painkillers, the pain immediately subsided, and Lin Wu tried to stand up, only for pain to surge through his body again, forcing him to lie down and take more medication.
Nightmare: "Fifteen left."
Maya said, "They’re splitting into three groups, preparing to flank us from both sides."
Team A circled left, Team B circled right, while Team C relied on the bridge’s guardrail to cover the assault team.
Arranged neatly at both ends of the western parking lot were stacks of logs. Peanut was on the upper log stack, Nightmare on the lower. Maya was in the middle, using a scrapped Overlord as cover. Horse Soul on the post couldn’t even raise his head now; he was completely suppressed by Team C. Only by experiencing it firsthand could one understand the concept of suppressive fire. To show your head was to invite death, so Horse Soul could only lift his gun above cover and fire blindly at where the enemy might be located.
The most panicked was Peanut; he’d never seen such a sight. Facing the approaching enemy, he could only retreat step by step, with bullets occasionally hitting the logs, causing him immense psychological pressure.
The soldiers from Team A advanced while suppressing, with one soldier making a wide flank to three o’clock from Peanut. Just as Peanut seemed done for, Lin Wu, who managed to crawl to the edge of the rooftop, took down that soldier with a single shot. The bullets that followed were like a torrential downpour. Lin Wu, with no cover in front of him and only the difference in rooftop height, had to roll away from the edge.
In contrast, Nightmare faced Team B’s five soldiers without a hint of fear. She took one end of the log stack, and the soldiers took the other, exchanging fire back and forth. An overeager soldier left his cover, and Nightmare killed him with two bursts of three-round fire.
Maya shouted, "Nightmare, a grenade."
Nightmare immediately crouched down with her head in her hands as the grenade detonated on the log in front of her. Although the log blocked the shrapnel, the blast wave caused her chest to feel tight, and she supported herself on one hand while covering her chest with the other, vomiting. Taking advantage of this, the right team advanced, and Lin Wu fired another shot. The .50 caliber bullet severed a soldier’s left leg. Amidst the soldier’s screams of agony, Lin Wu rolled away from the edge and continued moving to a different location.
The number of soldiers decreased to 13. Since both sides lacked heavy weaponry, neither risked advancing. Although the players had no casualties, several were injured. First, Lin Wu broke his leg; then, Peanut was hit by grenade shrapnel in the abdomen and left arm; Horse Soul was wounded by splinters from wood shot up at the sentry post, his face covered in blood.
Persistence was victory. After three minutes of battle, reinforcements finally arrived. A large number of zombies were drawn by the noise. The players immediately switched to silenced weapons, while the NPCs continued firing loudly, attracting all the zombies their way. Fire Team "C" took some men to clear the approaching zombies, easing the pressure on the players.
The most important thing was to rescue Horse Soul and Lin Wu.
Under Maya’s direction, Lin Wu helped Peanut while Horse Soul covered Nightmare. Nightmare progressed along the log, single-handedly pulling the pin from a grenade, releasing the safety lever, and after counting down, threw it behind the log barricade.
Four shots rang out, and four NPC soldiers were blasted into disarray, but they didn’t die on the spot. Nightmare intended to run up to finish them off with her gun, but suddenly, a bullet flew towards her and struck her on the forehead. The impact knocked her back and sent her tumbling down. Although the forehead guard saved her life, it knocked her unconscious.
Horse Soul: "Nightmare is dead."
Lin Wu: "She’s not." They could check her status from the same base.
Horse Soul: "She’s not moving."
Maya: "She must be unconscious. Cover me!" With that, she ran to the side.
"Cover you? How do we cover?" Lin Wu and Horse Soul often heard this term in movies but never really understood what it meant. They were always firing at the enemy. Did covering mean standing up and drawing the enemy’s fire toward oneself?
While the two of them misunderstood the meaning of cover, Maya slid through the hail of bullets to the shelter previously occupied by Nightmare. She took two steps along the log before retreating back to cover: "There’s a sniper in the river channel under the bridge." It seemed Nightmare was taken out by this person.
A grenade landed on the bridge, and Stone made an impressive entrance with a grenade launcher, walking like Schwarzenegger with a shotgun. The next second, a bullet hit the grenade launcher, knocking the weapon out of his hands, followed by a bullet striking Stone’s shoulder. Schwarzenegger Stone lay down and cursed loudly, "XXX, can it really be that accurate?"
Lin Wu responded, "If it were accurate, you’d be dead."
Survival on the bullet-riddled battlefield mainly depended on luck rather than skill.
Stone yelped in pain and said, "I didn’t bring any painkillers, damn Dawn." The pain arrived belatedly. Whatever medical reform they implemented, feeling your own left shoulder bone shattering was not at all pleasant.
Lin Wu took down the sniper in the river channel with one shot: "Maya, it’s taken care of."
Maya threw a smoke bomb and quickly crouched-walked to save Nightmare.
Stone, who had been crying out in pain, realized no one else was free to help him, so he had to crawl back to the west gate himself, picking up the grenade launcher along the way, then continuing to the warehouse. After taking painkillers, Stone finally had the strength to curse, "What the hell, how can you guys dare to shoot?"
Lin Wu replied, "Old man, the one who suggested we fight is close to being done for." He spent most of his time crawling, from the left to the right, from the right to the side, firing a shot each time he moved.
After exchanging a few words with Stone, Lin Wu completed both shooting and crawling. Sharpshooter plus a .50, one shot one kill.
Although the soldiers outnumbered them, they had to split their forces to deal with the zombies and also fend off attacks from Peanut and others, so they couldn’t assign someone to keep a constant watch on the rooftop. However, Lin Wu’s trouble also arrived. The loud noise of the .50 caliber attracted over ten zombies into the safe zone of the Meteorological Station, and they headed straight for the rooftop.
Lin Wu turned over, drew out Silent Night Lock Head, and killed six zombies in rapid succession. Then he reached into his backpack for a spare pistol. As the zombies lunged at Lin Wu, they struggled together, then more zombies joined the fray. Bitten several times, Lin Wu painfully pulled out his backup handgun, Lock Head fired, and within three meters the bullets veered wildly, headshotting whoever they locked onto.
Pushing away the zombies, Lin Wu supported himself on his arm and then cried out in pain again. He quickly took a painkiller, then turned to see a large chunk of his left arm had been eaten away, his bone visible and blood gushing out non-stop. Lin Wu hastily wrapped a bandage over it, not caring if it stemmed the bleeding, dragged his battered body, and, gripping Forest Wolf, made it to the edge of the rooftop to take down one more.
