Chapter 400: Chapter 214 Illness

The work began in earnest.

First, Lin Wu went to the room next to the Blood Heart to find a building materials package, taking along some hardware products according to Maya’s needs. Where there was hardware, there were bound to be building materials, no problem.

Second, Lin Wu returned to the base, where Maya constructed the workshop.

Third, Maya contacted her family through the radio and, with the help of Su Shi, who was a real engineer, designed a pulley-like device that could wind and unwind a rope by turning a handle. Under Su Shi’s guidance, a catch was installed so that when it was released, the rope would be fixed.

Fourth, Lin Wu took Maya’s repeating crossbow and started killing.

Using guns was definitely not an option, as there were not enough bullets. The repeating crossbow was different; crossbow arrows were simple to make and the materials were cheap. A single office could be dismantled to obtain a large amount of scrap iron and splintered wood. Su Shi could craft a crossbow arrow with 1 scrap iron and 2 pieces of splintered wood, while Maya needed to use twice the materials. However, crossbow arrows could be recovered while corpse looting.

The core of this set-up was Maya. The key was whether Maya could constantly stay focused and carry out every rope maneuver Lin Wu required. Fortunately, Maya was a being capable of concentrating to an extent that her own kind found terrifying.

Lin Ma worked tirelessly all day, crafting an assembly line for harvesting serum. Although today was tough and could be said to have yielded nothing, tomorrow would surely be beautiful. Why not work at night? Lin Ma did not dare to guarantee that there were no Night Demons in this office building. In a place surrounded by zombies without a clear picture of the situation, acting rashly at night was not a good idea.

...

The temporary base’s dormitory was terribly rudimentary, providing only a few small candles without even a screen, crudely furnished with bunk beds made of iron frames, which meant there was virtually no privacy. But then again, whoever had ended up establishing a base here couldn’t be worried about silly privacy.

Maya went to bed at eight in the evening, and Lin Wu watched over her, growing more and more admiring. After getting into bed, Maya did not move at all. She did not turn over or search for a comfortable sleeping position. Instead, she lay down in a mechanical infant-like position, and once she pulled up the blanket, she became still.

Not realizing that observing her was pointless, Lin Wu sulkily took his handgun to the narrow path at the edge of the safe area and sat down on a chair, slumping against it. There was just a small candle hanging overhead at the edge of the safe zone, providing a bit of light. With this slight illumination, Lin Wu wasn’t afraid of a Night Demon surprise attack.

Having played Home now for so long, aside from the humiliating Black Bear, the greatest threat to Lin Wu were the Night Demons. Lin Wu had once been bitten by one at the North Town sentry card and had only survived by exhausting his medical supplies. After the recent update to the medical system, a single bite would be undoubtedly lethal.

It was said that many players complained about the medical system after the update, feeling that Dawn had ignored the body’s natural healing abilities. Players claimed that after some negotiation, Dawn had agreed to consider a more detailed assessment, such as continuous bleeding only occurring from an arterial cut. Dawn hadn’t decided immediately because they were still gathering feedback from the players. Blood loss simply leading to a decrease in health did not align with Dawn’s original intention.

Since moving to the Sawmill, the only bases Stone could contact through the upgraded radio were the two small ones at the North Down Town farm. The prime 8 PM Gold connection time was long gone. Back then, Stone broadcasted like he was live-streaming, keeping the channel public so that others could listen in on his conversations with his targets.

It was said that the ones who occupied the North Town Church Base were a brother and a sister duo. They had five people originally but two died in the battle to seize the base. Another was killed in a revenge attack by an enemy. Currently, the players near the Church Base weren’t exactly fond of them. Despite controlling a premium base, they were unable to attract others.

Why were the siblings generating such animosity? The connecting bases weren’t sure; the siblings weren’t enthusiastic about the connection and only answered some of Stone’s questions out of politeness.

The chair creaked as Lin Wu sat up and gripped Silent night tightly. Several Blood Zombies squeezed past the chair around the corner, spotting Lin Wu sitting at the end of the path. They lined up and ran toward him, with one starting too late and getting tripped by the others. Without leaving his chair, Lin Wu took aim with Lock Head and headshot them. In the base, bullets cost nothing, nor did stamina; how could a few zombies pose a threat?

What about five Frenzies? No worries, the assault rifle equipped with a professional silencer was ready at all times. Such narrow paths were rare; and not to exaggerate, but without considering injuries leading to death, Maya alone could face thousands of zombies. However, the strength of a Blood Plague assault team was in its harassment—you weren’t meant to be killed by it; it just aimed to prevent you from resting or daydreaming properly.

...

The assembly line work on the first day went very smoothly. Lin Wu teased the Blood Heart, which released a few zombies and had an 80% chance of spawning a Blood Ferocious Ma. A Blood Ferocious Ma hopped around on the crane before dying, and Lin Wu climbed onto the crane for corpse looting.

Lin Ma was very careful, only taking on the first wave of Blood Heart squads, and had to rest for a minute after each round to give the Blood Heart enough time to recover.

By around two in the afternoon, Lin Wu had collected 20 bottles of serum. At Lin Wu’s request, Maya agreed to rest for half an hour. Lin Wu was winched back up to the 27th floor and was about to make a joke but saw Maya looking pale. Upon asking, he learned that Maya had felt unwell since getting up in the early morning to keep watch at night. She might have fallen sick due to the temperature difference without a bonfire for warmth, and she was also running a fever.

Doctors were divided into three categories: surgeons who could treat fractures and bleeding, biochemists who could handle virus infections including zombie virus infections, and general practitioners who could treat both fractures and bleeding as well as common viral infections. A cold could be minor or severe. Emerald Feather was a general practitioner who could treat every illness except the zombie virus.
