Chapter 373: Chapter 203 Left County Hotel_2

Snow Egg and Horse Soul used both hands to pull the zombie from the pile of corpses and dragged it to Little Knife’s feet. With swift kicks, Little Knife crushed the zombie’s helmet with one foot, and the next stomp burst its head along with the helmet. Lin Wu, having not seen Little Knife kick for many days, admired her versatility and was intimidated by the might of her feet.

Shana quickly grabbed a lasso and ran to Lin Wu’s side, tossing it to him. Continuing to swing the lasso, Lin Wu seemed to miss his throw but instead ensnared a Solar Demon. He immediately showed an expression that suggested he intended to catch the Solar Demon all along, but no one had the time to appreciate it as they pulled the demon under Little Knife’s feet, where it met its demise.

Lin Wu’s lasso throws became more accurate, all thanks to his stealth skill, which allowed him to strike zombies from a distance of 5 meters. Although far from the professional technique of cowboys who rode horses and swung lassos, for the utilitarian Lin Wu, it was already great. If it works, it’s good enough.

With the increasing accuracy of Lin Wu’s lasso, one zombie after another fell at Little Knife’s feet. Once the regular zombies were no longer providing cover, the few remaining Solar Demons had nowhere to hide from the drones’ scans and were completely eradicated with a few shots from the pistol. It took an hour and a half, but Shadow finally captured the helicopter.

...

Out of the 8 intact boxes, 7 contained a medkit, ammunition, fuel, and food, one each. There were two boxes of pistol ammo totaling 50 rounds, one Tracer Bullet magazine attachment, two professional suppressors, one advanced car repair kit, and four 3kg F4 (C) explosives.

The loot was good but not as much as everyone expected. When Lin Wu opened the last box, he found something resembling a gun but not quite a gun. It looked somewhat like a shotgun with a retractable stand, similar to a machine gun’s design. The barrel was thick and flanked by ammunition belts with six large bullets each. This was Lin Wu’s understanding of the gun.

Upon seeing this weapon, Maya’s eyes widened with surprise as she picked it up to examine it, "The M7 Grenade Launcher." She then educated everyone else about it. Grenade launchers were commonly used firearms in the latter half of the 20th century, with many standard guns equipped with grenade launcher attachments. They could fire both bullets and grenades, allowing for the targeting of enemies hidden in trenches or even light armored vehicles with parabolic grenade shots.

In the game, it was called a Grenade Launcher rather than an attachment, indicating the system recognized it as a gun and, therefore, at the base, it would enjoy unlimited grenades.

However, there is a downside to everything. There’s no arguing the killing power and area of effect of grenades. But since grenades are explosives, they create substantial noise and shrapnel from the explosion could damage the base’s facilities. For zombies, what mattered was the head, not the body, and dozens of shrapnel embedded in the body was not fatal.

Upon further consideration, the practical use of the Grenade Launcher hardly justified Maya’s excitement. However, the imaginative Lin Wu found a special use for it, "Maximum range of 400 meters. Let the Sentry use it to fire at an empty space. After the explosion, all nearby zombies will rush to the blast site to investigate, and then the Sentry can follow with another grenade. By exploiting this tactic, we can achieve great results in our forthcoming assaults on Resource Points surrounding the base."

Everyone agreed, and Maya, even more pleased with Lin Wu, gave him a thumbs up and happily put away the Grenade Launcher. The grenades made Maya fantasize about the future, where she could form a Shadow mortar team. If daring enough, she might even set up an artillery squad.

...

The group entered the elevator area, where the elevator was non-functional, and they proceeded down the stairs to the 35th floor. The fire doors on the 35th floor were tightly closed and could not be opened from the outside. Lin Wu continued down the stairs to the 30th floor, only to find that all the fire doors were locked from the inside.

Maya speculated that during a zombie onslaught, the hotel’s residents might have blocked the emergency exits to protect themselves. Of course, they must have died by now, as the virus wouldn’t be stopped by a mere door.

What to do? The simplest and most violent method was to blast open the fire doors with the newly acquired F4. However, the F4 came in individual packs, and using 3kg to blow up a door would be extremely wasteful. Especially since 12kg of F4 could blow off half of a Blood Heart’s HP.

Another method was to take the elevator shaft.

The process went smoothly. Maya pried open the rooftop elevator and descended to the 35th floor to open the elevator doors. As soon as she cracked open a slit, a zombie head squeezed through. Despite Maya’s daring nature, she screamed instinctively. The scream was instinctual, and so was combat, as in the next second, she knocked the zombie’s head back with her forehead.

From above, as Snow Egg watched the commotion, she turned to Little Knife and said, "I’ve always told you, you’re not violent at all."

"Auntie..." The people around immediately got goosebumps.

Below, Maya, with a crossbow in one hand, shot and killed a zombie outside the elevator and said through the headset, "Lin Wu."

Lin Wu responded via headset, "I’m here."

Lin Wu followed the service elevator to the 35th floor, looked around after poking his head through the pried doors, and squeezed into the elevator.

The floor was carpeted with the hotel’s standard carpet, and the floor service desk was to the left, where a female zombie in a uniform lay with her head tilted back. Even in death, it was evident she had been a beauty. Lin Wu took her out from behind, "Even in a five-star hotel, the zombies’ clothes are more elaborate than those outside."

This situation is rather unusual; normally, zombies all wear tattered clothes, and their appearances seem to be churned out from a handful of molds. The first time I encountered zombies wearing professional attire was in Laboratory A6, where many transformed researchers were clad in white lab coats.

Lin Wu, after corpse looting, reported, "Got a 35th-floor key card." It can open all the rooms on the 35th floor.

Maya said, "Continue with the reconnaissance."

Lin Wu reported, "This hotel is kind of fancy, I don’t quite understand it."

Maya asked, "Describe it to me."

Lin Wu replied, "To the right of the elevator is a fire exit, locked with chains and a padlock. On the left, there’s a garden with a rockery and flowing water, about two hundred square meters in size. A corridor encircles the garden, with rooms along it, the nearest room’s door marked VIP01."

Shana said, "That’s a high-end business hotel level. Not the most upscale, though; normally, there would be an amusement park and a swimming pool dedicated to this level. Based on the floor space, I would guess there are 5 to 7 large suites here."

Lin Wu added, "The zombies in the corridor are wearing black suits, though they’re a bit ragged. Whoa..."

"What’s the matter?" everyone asked.

Lin Wu said, "One of the zombies is holding a handgun. What’s going on?"

Shana, having guessed the basic situation, said, "Bodyguard, a VIP’s bodyguard. Lin Wu, can it shoot?"

"Hard to say, the safety is off, and the handgun is cocked," Lin Wu replied as he took the handgun from the zombie’s hand and finished it off with a knife, then checked it and reported, "It’s fully loaded."

Everyone was astonished, "Do you have X-ray vision or what?"

Lin Wu clarified, "No, I was looking at the gun I took."

Maya gave orders, "Things are sounding rather ominous. Lin Wu, stay put. Horse Soul, guard the entrance to the rooftop drainage system, and keep an eye on changes on the rooftop. Everyone else, regroup at the elevator on the 35th floor."

Lin Wu reported after further corpse looting, "Got an ID, Future City Special Service Bureau agent."

Maya squatted down beside Lin Wu, took the ID to examine it, and said, "Responsible for the security of the Mayor of Future City, it seems the helicopter above came for him." How powerful is the Mayor of Future City? There are only ten cities on earth, and he’s the boss of one, which implies the prestige of his status.

Lin Wu reminded, "We’re not here for story clues; we’re here to scavenge." Obviously, the hotel’s narrative involved the game’s backstory. Lin Wu had little interest in story backgrounds, but he knew Maya had a particular fondness for solving game puzzles. After all, who spends two hours poring over A6 research documents? How much must she love puzzles?

Once the team was assembled and advanced along the corridor, Lin Wu took down another zombie in a black suit, who turned out to be the bodyguard of the Mayor of Fantasy City. Which means, there’s at least two mayors here.

Just as Lin Wu was about to open room 01, everyone in the team received a system notification: "Opening door 01 will initiate the mission: Evacuation. Mission Objective: Escort the mayors of Future City and Fantasy City out of the hotel. Hostile force: NPC Fortress Mercenary Blue River Squad. Mission difficulty: A grade."

"Damn," everyone exclaimed in surprise. No wonder there weren’t many zombies, and no wonder they were all in professional attire.

Lin Wu indignantly said, "They didn’t even mention a reward. Don’t they plan to give one?"

Maya looked at Lin Wu for a second, wondering why his thought process was so uniquely peculiar.
