Chapter 363: Chapter 199: Meteorological Station Base_3

"Stop," Lin Wu crouched in stealth, "There’s a shadow around the corner."

Emerald Feather said, "If there were zombies, they should have run out."

"Unless it’s a Night Demon." Lin Wu’s miner lamp illuminated, making the ten-meter-long path crystal clear. There were no shadows cast at the right bend. Lin Wu quickly stepped forward, pivoted around the corner with his gun raised, but saw no zombies. There was only a small path for drainage with several paths connected to it.

The game’s flood discharge channels were very regular. There were three drainage outlets on the ground above a pathway, and the water from the three outlets would flow into the path. With nine outlets, there were three paths, with water flowing from the paths into a transverse pathway. The more outlets there were, the more pathways there would be. If the number of outlets was insufficient, or if the pathways were too narrow, a single hour of heavy rain could turn a city into a lake, commonly known as urban flooding.

One reason for frequent urban flooding in 21st-century Earth cities was the absence of specialized flood discharge channels. Many discharge channels were mixed with the city’s domestic sewage system. Some cities, for the sake of convenience, did not excavate sewer systems but used pipes instead. Once the population increased and heavy rain occurred, urban flooding could easily happen.

While the game’s flood discharge channels connected many pathways, they couldn’t be called a labyrinth, but there were quite a few intersections.

Lin Wu returned to the main path, the primary route for floodwater to enter the river, and shook his head to the others. Maya nodded in understanding and commanded the group to continue walking forward.

After advancing a few dozen meters, a battle erupted with more than twenty zombies blocking the way, and they were eliminated with melee weapons and Crossbow Arrows. After experiencing two more battles, Maya discovered that zombies liked places with light. Whenever there was a drainage outlet above letting sunlight through, there would be zombies.

After ending the third battle, Shana led some people to turn into a pathway, or rather a median path, narrower than the main path but wider than the average path; they were now only 50 meters away from the first sewer outlet.

"Wait," Lin Wu called a halt again, walked into a side path ten meters deep, turned around at the corner, and still didn’t find his target. He retreated and left a Beast Trap at the corner, then rejoined the main force.

Lin Wu had just walked a few steps when the sound of the Beast Trap closing came from behind; he immediately turned around. Under the light of the miner lamp, a Night Demon with a Beast Trap clamped on its foot was trying to escape. Lin Wu instantly fired his gun, two shots to the head killed it, and he moved forward to loot the corpse. The Night Demon’s weakness was its fragility; a headshot was enough. Compared to that, its brother, the Blind Bat, required three headshots to be killed. Of course, its sister, the Solar Demon, was a joke, at least in winter, because not only did it move slowly, but it also left footprints, making its success rate for sneaking attacks very low.

"Night Demon?" Everyone rushed over at the sound, crowding the path.

Lin Wu nodded and collected the Night Demon’s eyes. They were a pharmaceutical ingredient that, once consumed as medicine, granted ten minutes of night vision ability. Lin Wu handed the eyes to Emerald Feather. Although the eyes were quite cute, like glass beads, Emerald Feather still found them somewhat disgusting but, as a doctor, she bravely took them.

"Night Demons can be used in medicine?" Lin Wu said, "That’s the first I’ve heard of it."

Little Knife said, "You’ve killed a few Night Demons at least; I’ve never confronted one directly."

Lin Wu said, "Believe me, you wouldn’t want to face one."

Most people had never seen a Night Demon, so when they heard Lin Wu put it that way, they started asking questions. Lin Wu could only explain vaguely. His method of killing Night Demons involved using sunlight, when they were more pitiable than a little girl who had her candy stolen. The other was black against black, speaking with firepower and skill. Basically, there was no exchange of blows; it was a fight to the death as soon as they engaged.
