Chapter 36 - 35 Night Demon
Chapter 36: Chapter 35 Night Demon
Maya pulled out a flare, pulled the fuse, and walked around the edge of the shipping container without encountering any zombies. Holding the flare, Maya signaled for Lin Wu to come over, and pointing with the flare’s peripheral light four meters away at a tent, she said, "Medical tent." A red cross was affixed to the top. Having said that, she prepared to jump down.
Lin Wu hurriedly stopped her, "We just made a mistake here. Military checkpoints, military quarantine zones—they’re naturally rich in resources. And yet, there are no zombies in such a place. Let’s review, solving the first zombie was easy, clumsy under the light. Even a newbie with a blunt weapon could take it down. The second one was very tricky, and players would definitely be drawn to the power supply truck and would surely open the car door. Then you have the pitfalls of the car being out of gas or power. Overall, it gives me a feeling: this outpost is a trap."
Maya said, "I’ll go down and take a look, if there’s a problem, I’ll jump up and you catch my hands to pull me back."
Lin Wu helplessly replied, "If we go, it should be me. You weigh at least 65 kilograms, without added strength I can’t pull you up."
"..." Maya was speechless for a long time, then raised her thumb, "You’ve thought it through." Her inner thought: Such a straight man. Her objective view: Lin Wu had absolutely no improper thoughts about her, so he discussed things on their merits without having to consider her feelings.
Just as Lin Wu was about to get out of the vehicle, they heard the sound of motorcycles. The two of them immediately lay flat on the shipping container, and saw from the direction of Left County two motorcycles approaching, with four people. When they reached the lamp post, three were on guard while a woman tried to start the power supply truck. After a while, she came back and reported, "Cheng Bro, there’s no power."
The man referred to as Cheng Bro said, "The system won’t let us get the power that easily. Little Devil, you take the lead."
The four people walked downhill from the lamppost toward the tent area. The team’s equipment was not bad, each equipped with fairly high-end melee weapons; the woman had a handgun, and Cheng Bro had an ancient repeater gun on his backpack.
From their conversation, it was learned they were players from a nearby base. The outpost had many zombies during the day, with half of them wearing bulletproof vests and helmets, which were very troublesome to deal with. Little Devil and Lin Wu were similar types of players—agile types who prowl the night. Little Devil had scouted the outpost at night and found only one or two zombies there.
Bai Ban and Night Demon had disagreements. They had set out to scout yesterday evening and encountered a very strange phenomenon. After sunset, military bugle calls sounded from the outpost’s loudspeakers. The zombies, hearing the bugle, slowly walked back to the tent area. Little Devil followed the last zombie to see it walk back into the tent area, enter a shipping container, and then close the container door behind it.
So why didn’t they act yesterday? The answer: they needed to prepare night lighting equipment—torches.
Someone lit a torch, and even in the rain, the flame was still dazzling, giving a direct sense of security. Lin Wu inwardly chided himself: why hadn’t he thought of torches? Maya had actually considered torches, but unlike electric light, torches not only allow players to see zombies but also let zombies see players.
Lin Wu and Maya were at a shipping container by the T-junction, where the four people had confirmed the tent holding important supplies and followed Little Devil straight on. From his high vantage point, Lin Wu, aided by the light of the torch, faintly saw movement at the other corner of the road. He softly poked Maya’s arm and pointed to the right, moving slowly to whisper in her ear, "Mutation."
No sooner had he uttered the word; Lin Wu and Maya heard the sound of someone stepping in a puddle about five meters away. That spot was a blind angle, and Lin Wu and Maya remained still, holding their breath. The sounds of stepping in puddles and crunching gravel slowly reached the edge of the shipping container.
Hearing the sounds pass underneath, Maya quietly pulled out a mirror to glance toward the source of the noise in the darkness, and then slowly put away the mirror and lay back down. Lin Wu looked at Maya, who made a gesture for silence. Lin Wu could only temporarily suppress his curiosity.
The creature did not seem to be trying to hide its footsteps and began to run towards the T-junction, its speed seemingly not much less than Frenzy’s. Soon, the footsteps faded, and about ten seconds later, a girl’s scream rang out, "Zombies... save me..." But in three to five seconds, the girl’s voice could no longer be heard.
Only then did Maya speak to Lin Wu, "Night Demon."
Twenty meters away, gunfire and Cheng Bro’s cursing echoed, "Where did they run off to?"
Little Devil: "I don’t know, where’s Jian Bro?"
Cheng Bro shouted: "Ah Jian, where are you?"
A male voice came from seven meters away: "Cheng, I’m over here."
Cheng: "How do I get there?"
Male voice: "Keep walking forward, there’s an intersection. Turn right along the containers... shit, what’s that."
Cheng: "Stay calm, we’re coming right over."
Lin Wu stood up and walked to the edge of the containers to see a fire. He saw a man waving a torch with both hands, while a Night Demon stealthily appeared behind him.
The bald Night Demon’s body, akin to a human without skin, had all its muscles clearly visible. Compared to other zombies, in addition to having a larger mouth, its face was more human-like.
The Night Demon pounced on the man from behind, opened its mouth - a huge maw that almost covered its entire face - and bit into the man’s shoulder, visibly tearing off a chunk of flesh. The man screamed out in agony as the Night Demon grabbed him with both hands and smashed him against the container, creating a human-shaped dent with its immense strength.
The Night Demon didn’t linger for battle and ran into the darkness. The next second, Cheng and Xiaogui arrived. Cheng took a look at the brother on the ground and, holding his gun, looked around: "Damn it, come out."
The man attacked by the Night Demon shouted desperately: "20 life points, severe bleeding, losing 3 life points per second."
Cheng quickly said: "Xiaogui, bandages, bandages!"
Xiaogui: "The bandages are with Sister Hua."
"Shit."
In Cheng’s frustrated and helpless curses, the man bled to death. Cheng was angry but also very careful, holding his gun in alert: "Xiaogui, check the loot."
Maya whispered to Lin Wu standing beside her: "It’s very fast but not as much as Frenzy. Extremely strong. Players bitten by it will suffer severe bleeding."
Lin Wu, holding a double-barreled shotgun, said: "Doesn’t sound too tough."
Maya: "The Night Demon, just by the name, you know it’s like the Blind Bat - a zombie that roams at night. It excels in ambushing players without lights, catching them off guard."
They thought the Night Demon was dealing with Cheng and his group, and indeed it was. They thought there was only one Night Demon...
Lin Wu, peering curiously at the commotion of others, didn’t realize he had become the prey. On top of a container eight meters away, a Night Demon was slowly approaching him. It walked to the edge of the container, still a few meters from Lin Wu. The Night Demon crouched and leaped toward Lin Wu, the container making a significant noise under its weight. Lin Wu, hearing the strange noise behind him, decisively activated Wind Stinger to leap over the middle path, onto the top of the opposite container. Looking back, he saw a Night Demon with its mouth wide open standing next to Maya.
Before Maya and the Night Demon could react, Lin Wu had already sprang back with Wind Stinger, the barrel of his gun pressed against the Night Demon’s head. But before Lin Wu could pull the trigger, the Night Demon had already jumped off the container, blending into the darkness. It wasn’t that the Night Demon reacted fast or that Lin Wu was slow. Lin Wu needed to make sure of his target before he could shoot with Wind Stinger. What if he accidentally shot Maya?
"Retreat." Finally processing what had happened in the last two seconds, Maya took the lead and jumped off the container, running toward the direction of the streetlights.
