Chapter 340: Chapter 191 Sawmill Base_2
The Soulless brothers took positions at either end of the western parking lot. Because there was still a 10 square meter gap in the middle where zombies could spawn, they had to maintain stealth and use hunting crossbows to handle any zombies that might appear. If it was too much, they could ask Maya for help.
The battle inside the factory was dragging on, with Lin Wu repeatedly changing positions, taking out the zombies one by one. Every time he killed half of them, more zombies would spawn. Maya coordinated with Lin Wu to clear the area, advancing eastward together and occupying positions with their bodies to prevent zombies from respawning.
After assessing the actual situation in the factory, Maya changed the plan, deciding to have Peanut stay behind as well. Stone, Shana, Peanut, and Maya divided up the area of the factory, leaving a 40 square meter unsafe zone in the middle.
Lin Wu led Emerald Feather and Little Knife to advance into the eastern parking lot. It took some time, but they successfully dealt with the eastern parking lot. Only the largest and most difficult area remained—the backyard.
The back door of the backyard led to a path, beside which was a tributary of the Left County West River. In spring, the river was only 40 centimeters deep, and many zombies were walking in the water. Besides various zombies, there was also a Titan near the back door.
Every situation has its pros and cons. Although the lack of elevation made defense of the sawmill more challenging, the zombies had nowhere to hide during an assault, making it easy to pinpoint their location at a glance.
Lin Wu crouched at the north gate of the factory and began his killing spree. The Silencer and stealth turned all the zombies into sitting ducks, falling one by one, inexplicably at the muzzle of his gun. Elsewhere, Snow Egg called for help as an Exploding Carnage spawned in their vulnerable spot.
Maya, wielding a Repeating Crossbow, arrived at the western parking lot and hesitated to fire. The arrows’ flight path was unstable; hitting the Exploding Carnage might lead to a complete collapse. After careful consideration, Maya switched to a silenced pistol with a scope and executed a headshot on the Exploding Carnage. Meanwhile, in the eastern parking lot and inside the factory, zombies continued to spawn, but everyone remained calm and collected, posing no threat to their siege efforts.
Maya returned to the factory, stealthily approached Lin Wu to observe the situation, and discovered that only fifty percent of the zombies remained in the backyard.
It wasn’t that Lin Wu lacked efficiency, but Frenzy was troublesome to handle, requiring several shots, and it suffered from hyperactivity. Typically, Lin Wu would deal with a Frenzy by letting it charge straight at him. Without an enemy in sight, a Frenzy would sometimes look up, roll around, or swivel its head, making headshots much more challenging.
Maya spotted the Titan moving along the edge of the safe zone, realizing that even if they took down the sawmill, they likely couldn’t avoid a bloody battle with the Titan.
Lin Wu’s patience paid off. Nearly running out of bullets and with Maya’s help, he finally cleared all the zombies from the backyard. However, Captain Stone’s order to establish the base was deemed invalid. Lin Wu reported through the headset from the back door, "The Titan is within line, do you need me to lure it away?"
"No, there are many zombies in that direction, and you would have nowhere to run if you lured the Titan there," Maya crouched beside Lin Wu and as soon as the Titan stepped out of line, she immediately ordered, "Occupy."
Stone replied, "Fail."
This time a Frenzy spawned in the eastern parking lot, and Maya immediately went to provide support. Another attempt to occupy failed as two zombies spawned in the backyard. After dealing with those two zombies, an Exploding Carnage spawned in the factory. After handling the Exploding Carnage, they realized that the damned Titan had moved back into line.
Captain Stone only needed 5 seconds. If he could keep the safe zone free of zombies for just 5 seconds, he could establish the base.
They were still short on people, unable to fully cover the entire base area. After several attempts, Stone began the occupation, silently praying while watching the progress bar, offering up the price of Lin Wu abstaining from women for two years in prayer to God and all deities.
Finally, a beam of light flashed; the Shadow Base was established, and everyone received an invitation to join the base. The noise from the base’s construction alerted the zombies just outside the line. After accepting the invitation, Lin Wu reached for his gun to fend off enemies, only to realize it was gone. He then dashed into the factory and asked, "Where’s the warehouse?"
Everyone was as frantic as headless flies, asking the same question: "Where’s the warehouse?"
By then, zombies had already rushed into the factory. With everyone unarmed, Little Knife charged forward, brawling with five zombies. In the blink of an eye, Little Knife had killed all five zombies bare-handed.
"Split up and search," shouted Maya. The command center was not yet completed; there was no electronic map.
Zombies poured into the base from all directions, with the worst situation coming from the back door, where the sounds of Titans could be heard. Lin Wu had a flash of inspiration, released a drone, and through the drone’s perspective found a blue cabinet. He shouted, "In the southeast corner of the factory."
Lin Wu ran southeast, using non-system skills to slip past two zombies. He opened the warehouse, randomly grabbed a handgun, and turned around to shoot the two zombies dead. As Lin Wu switched to an assault rifle, Maya had just arrived, followed by Stone, Peanut, and soon everyone had either an assault rifle or a shotgun.
The five of them stood in the backyard holding assault rifles, immobile, and fired at the Titan, which was unable to attack. It was eventually killed on the spot by the five of them.
The fall of the Titan signified a complete victory in taking over the sawmill.
Stone found a radio and began to work on infrastructure construction. The sawmill had been planned to have double sentry towers, double farms, and double barracks, occupying six large slots. The infirmary and workshop took up two small slots. After the setup, only two small slots and two large slots were left. Due to a lack of building materials, only one sentry tower and one farm were built.
A characteristic of the sawmill was that it could produce one log per hour, but this required electricity. Since Shadow had abandoned the mountain top base, the electric outpost station tied to it was scrapped. Currently, Shadow had one Outpost Card, which Maya had acquired as a reward during the first expedition.
Stone, Maya, and Shana held a brief meeting. Maya and Shana then held a medium-short meeting and called everyone together to gather opinions on the new base.
Little Knife raised his hand, "I request furniture." There was nowhere to sit.
Snow Egg agreed, "Agreed."
Horse Soul said, "We can go fishing at the back door."
Peanut said, "I didn’t notice any Blood Mist around the sentry tower, but there are quite a few zombies around." The east, south, and west of the sawmill are surrounded by roads. The safe zones in the east and west extend to the edge of the roads, while the safe zone in the south cuts off the southern road. There’s a large slope with grass on the south road, with many zombies on it, including two Titans, but they were more than two hundred meters away from the base.
Su Shi hoped to add a recreation room, library, gym, and newsstand – places where people could pass the time.
Lin Wu had already set his eyes on the weather observation station on the southern slope of the base, about 50 meters away from the edge of the sawmill’s safe zone. He planned to establish an alliance between the sub-base at the observation station and the sawmill, resulting in overlapping safe zones. It had been discussed before to build a sentry tower at the observation station to aid the sawmill’s defenses.
Maya said, "Whatever we need, the biggest problem right now is building materials." Without building materials, there is no point in talking about sub-bases, let alone complete infrastructure.
Shana said, "There are many factories and warehouses within a 500-meter radius, but this area is also the original part of Left County, with a high density of zombies. Not only are there frequent appearances of Frenzy, but there are also a significant number of Titans. According to our strategic thinking, our first step is to rely on the sawmill’s safe zone to clear the surrounding zombies. We have to reduce the zombie density to a level we can tolerate."
Lin Wu asked, "Where to find building materials if we don’t leave? Oh, you mean looking for a power station?"
Maya nodded, "That’s right. Once we have electricity and enter manufacturing mode, the base will produce one unit of building material per hour. However, the manufacturing process will generate a lot of noise. We have Snow Egg’s sound insulation technology, and with the suppression of the threat value by the double sentry towers, we should be able to handle this issue."
Su Shi reminded, "We can build a sniper tower." Sniper towers can provide shooting bonuses for sentries and noise reduction bonuses. Shadow has two plans: one is to use a Sniper Tower Building Card, and after upgrading, choose to consume one ammunition per day to reduce the medium threat value. The other plan is for Su Shi, as a junior engineer, to build a sniper tower, but it requires two ammunitions to reduce the medium threat value.
Given the materials we currently have, it’s clear that we can’t reduce the threat value through the consumption of ammunition by the sniper towers; we have to rely on personnel on duty to lower the threat value. The maximum number of personnel on duty at a sentry tower is one, while a sniper tower can hold two. However, upgrading the sniper tower also requires a lot of building materials.
