Chapter 315: Chapter 181 Exploration Task_2

"Is it useful?"

Fire Dance shook her head lightly, "Not very, but somewhat." It’s a valuable skill, but it’s not easy to use this system well. Just like real radar scanning, the radar operator has to distinguish whether a blip is a cloud, a bird, or a plane. A cruder radar can only make judgments by comparing movement distances manually. Advanced radars provide data based on the difference in speed detected in two scans: moving speed, size of objects. When necessary, it can also lock onto a target continuously.

Clearly, Fire Dance’s scanning skill was still on par with a World War II-era radar, but it was still a radar.

Lin Wu used Stealth, and Fire Dance followed, passing through two subway cars before Fire Dance tapped Lin Wu’s shoulder. It was then that Lin Wu turned to look at Wai and saw its eyes bulging out. He patted its head to comfort it and told it to wait as he himself felt his way out.

Under the headlamp light, about a dozen green zombies in the car all looked over at them. Fuck, this light also attracted enemies. He was so used to using the flashlight that he forgot common sense. The light went off, Wind Stinger backed away, and Fire Dance collided with the second Wind Stinger. Lin Wu reached out to grab her to prevent any noise from a potential fall.

Lin Wu didn’t dare make a sound and nudged Fire Dance with his body. Understanding the hint, she backed away, and Lin Wu petted Wai’s head before retreating with the dog.

"Maya, the machete." Lin Wu left Wai behind and charged into the darkness.

Soon after, Lin Wu came running back screaming, and Maya greeted the green zombies with her knife. The corridor was narrow, and using the environment to her advantage, Maya was able to chop all the dozen or so green zombies to death like she was chopping vegetables. It was then that Fire Dance realized she had been in the way. If it weren’t for her blocking the path, Lin Wu would have led the zombies back much earlier.

Lin Wu was uncharacteristically not disparaging anyone and continued exploring with Fire Dance. The last subway car also contained green-skinned zombies. After eliminating the zombies, they descended from the subway and walked into the pitch-black tunnel, where they could faintly hear strange noises, like the calls of deep-sea dolphins or a soprano being choked, intermittent and echoing.

Starlight opened the map, which was clear under the headlamp’s beam, and said, "Ahead are three paths, Line 1, Line 2, and Line 3, besides the maintenance passageway, there aren’t many side routes."

Lin Wu stood to one side and said, "Any will do."

Maya said, "Line 1."

"Alright." The tunnel was quite wide, so Starlight arranged for Lin Wu and Fire Dance to go ahead. The ten people split into five pairs. After all, they were players, and soon they became eight groups, then quickly four.

A man in the back called out, "Stop, stop."

"Shh." Starfire made a silent gesture.

Closer to the man, Sunlight asked, "What’s the matter, Lu Yi?"

"Lu Jia is gone."

Match info was unavailable to check the status of others or communicate; the only function of forming a team was shared tasks. They couldn’t access base information within the instance, so there was no way to know about Lu Jia’s fate.

Sunlight asked, "When did you notice?"

"Just now. He was supposed to walk with me. I came up and spoke to Prison Bird for a bit, and when we mentioned Lu Jia, I turned around and he was gone. I went back to look for a while but didn’t find anything."

Starlight asked, "At the crossroads?"

"Near the crossroads, I guess." Lu Yi wasn’t sure.

Lin Wu looked at Wai, who was sitting quietly.

Sunlight said, "Everyone, wait here a moment. Prison Bird, Trapped Beast, and I will go check it out."

Sunlight and the others walked about 70 meters to the crossroads where, under the beam of their headlamps, they saw several zombies crouched over and gnawing at a corpse.

There was a special task reminder before: human corpses in the tunnels and subway would be refreshed after 24 hours and not decay.

Sunlight recognized the corpse as Lu Jia from the clothes and, infuriated, took out his pistol and shot a zombie dead. Seeing their boss open fire, the two beside him also drew their pistols and began shooting the zombies. The zombies completely ignored the death of their comrades and the noise, and were quickly eliminated by the three men. What was left on the ground was the gruesome remains of Lu Jia, his backpack also gone.

When the rear group arrived in response to the noise, Sunlight had already placed Lu Jia’s body into a sleeping bag.

"A body?" Lin Wu asked, seeing Sunlight nod, he stepped forward, pulled back the cover, and took a quick glance. Fuck! Dead Dawn, does it have to be so realistic? Suppressing his breath, Lin Wu walked to the side and bent over, retching. Maya had anticipated this and patted Lin Wu’s back, handing him some water.

Although it was just a game, the appearance of the corpses delivered a huge psychological shock to everyone, as if this were a real world.

Maya pulled Starlight aside, "He wasn’t attacked by zombies."

Starlight nodded, "Otherwise, there definitely would have been noise. Was it a Mutant Spider?"

"Not sure."

Elsewhere, Lin Wu sat on the ground, taking deep breaths. Not seeing Wai come over, he shook his headlamp around in search, and saw Wai a meter away in a defensive stance. Lin Wu immediately looked towards where Wai was looking, the entrance of Tunnel 3. The headlamp swept over, only showing a trapped beast lying motionless on the ground. It seemed as though something swiftly left at the edge of the light. Lin Wu hurriedly took a few steps, circumventing the crowd, and ran to the entrance of Tunnel 3 to look inside, but he only saw a slightly curved rail track and no signs of any creature.

Everyone rushed forward to check the condition of the trapped beast, whose chest and back were bleeding, fallen into a coma. Fire Dance pulled out bandages to stop the bleeding, with each bandage only able to sustain for five minutes.

"Through-and-through wound," Maya whispered in Lin Wu’s ear.

As there was no battlefield first aid officer, no one knew what to do. Fortunately, the trapped beast woke up. Faced with questions, he himself didn’t understand what had happened. He felt no pain, indicating his body was on a bandage countdown, a through-and-through wound causing minor bleeding. Unlike grazes, through-and-through wounds couldn’t heal by themselves.

Sunlight said, "We need to go back to the supply point." Only the supply point could completely treat the bleeding.

Maya nodded, "Okay," then looked at Lin Wu.

Lin Wu said, "Now that we’ve come this far, we can’t return empty-handed."

Sunlight responded, "Suit yourselves, we’re leaving." He was quite loyal and didn’t leave Lu Jia’s body behind, carrying the mixed sleeping bag on his shoulder. As long as the body was taken to the tunnel entrance, it would respawn.

After watching Sunlight and his group leave, Lin Wu asked, "How can a through-and-through wound only cause minor bleeding?"

Maya answered, "Coagulation. It’s an animal, seems like it’s the Mutant Spider. You didn’t see it when you chased after it just now, right?"

"Right."

"Watch your head," Maya warned. "Such a stealthy creature likely doesn’t have strong attack power."

Lin Wu asked, "Tunnel 3?"

Maya nodded, "Since we came here for a task, of course we take Tunnel 3, switch to night vision devices."

Having put on the trinocular night vision device and turned on the flashlight, they adjusted the flashlight to flood mode to enhance the faint light and strengthen the effect of the night vision device, instantly dispelling the darkness.

Stealthily advancing only 15 meters, they saw three green zombies standing facing or away from them, Maya’s Repeating Crossbow reaping them, the sound of falling bodies followed by what seemed like an extra noise behind it.

The Repeating Crossbow and Silencer were not powerful enough, so the two switched to handguns. Lin Wu stealthily moved forward 10 meters, rounded a bend, and saw a Patterned Spider larger than a human clinging to the top of the tunnel. To call it a spider wasn’t exactly right either; protruding from its abdomen was a zombie’s head, surrounded by clear, crystal-like ’staphylococci’ resembling insect eggs. Although Dawn did its best to make it seem less frightening, the visual impact still brought Lin Wu a strong sense of discomfort.

The spider didn’t notice Lin Wu and focused on moving along the top towards the depths. Lin Wu followed the spider for a few dozen meters, then saw a glass-like tube. There was a branch off the side of the tunnel about 10 meters long, with the tube standing at the end of the branch.

The glass tube extended through the ceiling, and from its size, Lin Wu deduced this was the part of the green device that was buried in the soil. There was information from their first expedition that the green device was installed during the construction of the subway.

At the bottom of the green device was a pool about 5 square meters, its depth unknown, full of a green unidentified liquid. A zombie was soaking in the green water within the glass tube. Suddenly, a door on one side of the tube opened, and the green water and the zombie fell from the tube into the pool, then the door automatically closed.

The tube drew the green liquid from the pool, soon filling the entire tube. A staphylococcus was suspended in the middle of the tube, visibly growing to human size, then slowly enlarging.

Meanwhile, the spider clinging to the ceiling was shaking its body, and the abdomen’s green ’grapes’ started falling into the pool, which quickly devoured them. The zombies that had just been born fell into the pool, crawled out, stood up outside the pool, and walked towards the branch where Lin Wu was.
