Chapter 28: Chapter 27: A Night Tour of the Factory

Lin Wu’s shouting woke everyone up, and it wasn’t his fault. When they heard that Maya had a fever, it was hard for them to believe. Tangtang was incredulous, his voice breaking, "A fever?" It was unbelievable, incomprehensible, and beyond reason.

"Go lie down in the infirmary," Stone said. "We have quite a bit of medical supplies, but we can’t produce any finished medicines. We need to figure out a way to get a doctor." There were cloth strips, alcohol, and by hand, one could make bandages, which could be tied around wounds to remove the bleeding status. But bandages could not be stored, and the alcohol would evaporate quickly.

Lin Wu said, "Keep it up, Stone."

Stone asked, "Why are you telling me to keep it up?"

Lin Wu spread his hands, "You’re the Boss, as well as the part-time HR manager. If the base has no doctor, who do you think should be blamed? Should we blame me for not scavenging a doctor, or blame Su Shi for not synthesizing one?"

Su Shi nodded, feeling that what Lin Wu said made a lot of sense, and high-fived him cheerfully.

Stone said helplessly, "Alright, I’ll step it up."

For Boss Stone, the good news was that the factory had a lot of building materials, and tomorrow Bai Ban driving out could mean a major construction effort. The bad news was that every time they built or demolished a facility, the threat level of the base would increase. Today they had taken the mountaintop church, withstanding the fierce onslaught of the zombie tide, but today no Frenzied had appeared. Even the presence of one Frenzy during the assault could mean all nine people from the two bases would’ve been lost at the mountaintop church.

Additionally, the living conditions in the church were poor, with no water source and no electricity. These two factors didn’t affect the players’ survival, but they had a significant impact on the players’ morale. Especially the lack of electricity, which made the mountaintop church spooky and terrifying at night, like a haunted house. Moreover, many facilities needed water and electricity to be built.

...

Lin Wu returned to the factory at one o’clock in the morning and found the path to the underground changing room following Bai Ban’s directions. Opening the door revealed stairs leading down to the worker’s changing and shower rooms. But as soon as he pushed the door open, Lin Wu heard the sound of a Frenzy. He pulled out his shotgun and leaned it against the wall near the door, to engage or not to engage?

The layout was unclear, and a head-on fight would put him at a disadvantage. The sound of gunfire would draw all the zombies in the factory to him. He gave up; it wasn’t worth risking so much for a telescope. There were a few more zombies on the way back, so Lin Wu took a detour, planning to leave through the back door of the factory.

He silently took down a few zombies along the way and managed to reach the back door smoothly, where he heard the sound of the Frenzy again. Not far from the back door was a riverside park, and it seemed the sounds were coming from there.

Lin Wu stealthily exited, walking to a higher place on the right, and shined his flashlight on the area below. About ten meters away was a picnic rest area consisting of five pavilions. Under each pavilion was a table, and outside the tables were stone benches fixed to the ground. There were no zombies found inside the five pavilions.

The Frenzy in the changing room was too dangerous, and it was entirely possible to inform Bai Ban orally to avoid the risk. The park’s Frenzy was unpredictable and it was unclear where it might appear the next day. If he could take it down, it would provide a bit more security for Bai Ban.

Lin Wu was cautious and careful as he slowly slid down the slope from the high ground. The sound of the Frenzy had disappeared for a while. But Lin Wu didn’t let his guard down and circled each pavilion before approaching, checking both the roof and under the tables for any sign of the Frenzy, while also clearing any stray zombies nearby.

After making a round of the pavilions and still no sign of the Frenzy, Lin Wu was drawn to the third pavilion. By the edge of the bench there was a black briefcase, and beside the briefcase was a baby stroller. In the game, whether players, NPCs, or zombies, elderly and children did not appear.

Lin Wu reached the third pavilion and heard a faint sound above his head, prompting him to crouch down next to a pillar. Soon, a sound came from above the pavilion, like a person breathing heavily, with a hoarse overtone that matched the roar of a Frenzy, only much quieter.

Listening to the sound on top of the pavilion, Lin Wu moved accordingly. Suddenly, a Frenzy jumped down from atop the pavilion, landing just over a meter in front of him. Upon spotting a human, the Frenzy customarily spent a second to roar as a way to alert its undead comrades. Having anticipated the Frenzy’s reaction, Lin Wu was prepared; before the Frenzy’s roar could escape, he pulled the bolt of his gun and sprayed bullets across the Frenzy’s head. The Frenzy was flung several meters away, twitching once before becoming motionless.

Lin Wu flipped over a table to seize a briefcase, and the system prompted: the volume is too large to be put in the backpack. Clutching the briefcase in his left hand, he slid over the table, hunkered down, and, with his right hand, looted the Frenzy’s corpse, unexpectedly retrieving a Skill Book. In the time it took to do so, the surrounding zombies had already begun to encircle him. Without time to check the Skill Book, he threw it into his backpack and, holding the briefcase, broke through the encirclement.

Wind Stinger slipped between two zombies, while a Screeching Zombie, seeing this, did not hesitate to blow its horn. Lin Wu checked his surroundings and decisively returned to the factory through the back door, moving through a workshop filled with machine tools. Considering his stamina, he no longer used the Wind Stab Skill but performed the actions of Wind Stinger to pass by zombies blocking his path. The non-system actions were much slower in comparison, and the opportunities to perform a backhand stab were few.

Utilizing a roll and diving under a three-paneled axe, Lin Wu charged out of the factory. Exiting through the main gate was out of the question; Lin Wu climbed up the planks stacked outside until reaching the top, then leaped from the plank peak over the factory wall. Landing, he rolled as he hit the ground and got up to continue his escape. Once clear of the obstacles, Lin Wu outstripped all the zombies, returning to the base unscathed and in Full Status.

None of the people at the church had slept; they all gathered at the edge of the safe zone, looking towards the factory. It had been a tumultuous night, first with Cotton’s death, followed by the chase from Blind Bat, then Maya’s fever, and now gunfire and an army of Screeching Zombies rallying. Soon, everyone saw Lin Wu, with the briefcase in hand, jogging home.

Seeing this, everyone felt that worrying about Lin Wu’s safety was completely unnecessary. Facing Frenzy didn’t kill him, neither did Blind Bat, and the small horde of Screeching Zombies was nothing but child’s play to him.

Lin Wu had no time to care why everyone was sleepwalking; upon returning to the base, his items were automatically stored. He said urgently, "There’s a Skill Book, and a briefcase."

Maya, sickly, asked, "What Skill Book?"

"Don’t know."

Maya asked again, "What’s in the briefcase?"

"Don’t know," Lin Wu explained, "I was escaping for my life."

Stone, on his way to the storage, asked, "Where did the Skill Book come from?"

Lin Wu answered, "I looted it from the Frenzy’s body."

Maya, amazed, asked, "You can find Skill Books on zombie bodies?" This meant she might have missed a lot. Perhaps there were dozens of Skill Books. From then on, except for Su Shi who got Dizzy from zombies, everyone in the base, including Maya, joined the Corpse Looting ranks.

"Yep," Lin Wu nodded.
