Chapter 267: Chapter 163 A5 (Part 2)
The zombies in this area were highly mobile, and even though Maya had cleared a path, it was filled again by zombies in less than a few minutes. Using a silent pistol in combination with a Repeating Crossbow and Silencer, Nightmare successfully reached the truck where Maya was. What followed was an open area one hundred meters in length.
There were no large coverings in the open area, only small objects such as trash bins, pits, simple washrooms, and car wash stations. Nightmare climbed atop the truck and lay next to Maya. Maya said, "The turret scans every 5 seconds."
After observing for a while, Nightmare said, "Trash bin, washroom, two pits, a drainage ditch, trash bin... 5 seconds. In theory, it’s doable."
Maya said, "There can be no mistakes."
Nightmare said, "Running at full speed while burning stamina will create a lot of noise."
Maya said, "We’ll take care of the zombies on your path. But you’ll have to use hand signals to let us know which cover you’re heading to."
As they spoke, an elevator rose from the tunnel, and a minecart full of zombies departed, merging with the zombies on the open ground. Maya questioned, "Is this zombie respawn?" Normally, zombies wouldn’t respawn near players. But it was within the rules for zombies to be respawned at the bottom of the mine and sent to the surface.
Nightmare nodded, "That’s one of the features of our mission."
Maya asked, "How would you complete the mission without our help?"
Nightmare replied, "Two rocket rounds to destroy the turrets directly, then charge straight through." That would be a huge expense. Moreover, he had to get the laptop within an hour and complete the evacuation; whether it was enough time or not, Nightmare had no confidence at all.
If the mission failed, the A5 Laboratory would be reset, and Nightmare would have to search for the laboratory again based on new clues. At that time, the laboratory’s defense could change.
Why were the defenses for A6 so weak? A6 wasn’t assessing player combat ability. Without Maya’s two hours of information gathering, even Maya couldn’t pass A6’s assessment. Furthermore, the first question Little White Rabbit asked them was whether they were Fortress agents. Who knew what a Fortress agent would face in their tests? The only certainty was that for regular players, Little White Rabbit was still somewhat friendly.
...
The battle began, Lin Wu and Maya cleared the zombies from Nightmare’s path, while Nightmare took advantage of the turret’s scanning gaps to dash madly, sliding into cover behind a trash bin. Nightmare looked at Lin Wu on the dormitory rooftop and gestured toward his side, but Wu on the rooftop kept waving his hands, which puzzled Nightmare.
Lin Wu stood on the edge of the rooftop, turned his back to Nightmare, squatted down and mimicked the motion of pulling down his pants, an indescribable act, then stood up and mimed pulling his pants back up. After pausing for a while, Lin Wu stretched out his hands and rubbed them together. After completing the motions, Lin Wu bent his left arm, pointing his fingertip downwards from his head, making a questioning gesture.
Thankfully, Nightmare was smart, and it took only 10 seconds to understand Lin Wu’s intentions after considering the terrain. Lin Wu was asking whether Nightmare’s next destination was the washroom or the hand washing station? The two were generally in the same direction, but with some distance between them.
Crouching, Nightmare made the gesture of pulling down trousers and, being unable to stand up, straightened his legs while bent over to mimic pulling them back up. Lin Wu understood and waved his left hand up and down to nod his head: understood.
Maya, who was lying on the roof of the truck, was already on the verge of passing out with suppressed laughter. It was Maya’s tolerance; had it been Shana, the mission in A5 would have ended then and there.
After Nightmare and Lin Wu seriously completed a set of gestures, Lin Wu successfully directed Nightmare to the back of the washroom. Nightmare pointed again, and this time Lin Wu understood. By now, they were beyond the range of the Repeating Crossbow, and Maya switched to an assault rifle with a silencer, ready to support.
With Lin Wu’s cooperation, Nightmare successfully made it to the tunnel, and seeing Nightmare disappear into the darkness, Lin Wu glanced at Maya, wanting to ask if Nightmare would betray them by hogging the secret mission once across the river.
After waiting a minute, the light on the Auto Turret went out. Lin Wu turned to cover Maya, and Maya approached the dorm to cover Lin Wu as he descended. They both took a detour into the tunnel.
Traditional tunnels went straight down, whereas this one was a sloped tunnel at a 45-degree angle. The two of them chose to walk down instead of taking the slope’s track elevator. After roughly a minute’s descent, they reached a small path at the bottom with lights above, where Nightmare was crouching, alert.
Nightmare pointed to the left, and Lin Wu proceeded stealthily. After a few minutes in the narrow path, the three arrived at an open area with two doors ahead.
Nightmare stepped forward, placed his right hand on the scanner which read his palm and fingerprints. A device descended to the level of Nightmare’s eyes, scanning his iris. Quickly, a voice from the system announced, "Welcome, Agent Nightmare, to the A5 Laboratory."
The two doors slowly swung inward, and Nightmare stood waiting at the doorway. The doors had only opened halfway when a Frenzy pounced out, knocking Nightmare to the ground. Lin Wu pounced forward and pinned the Frenzy’s head against Nightmare’s, delivering two consecutive strikes to finish it off. Unlike the typical Frenzies clad in ragged clothing, this one wore a white lab coat.
Lin Wu heard the sound of rapid gunfire as a Frenzy shot by Maya was pushed back into the door, only to pounce out again, colliding with Nightmare who had just stood up. Lin Wu, quick to react, pinned them down together and finished it off. A Wind Stinger approached Maya and took out the Silencer to watch the door warily.
The doors were now fully open, revealing a three-story base with one level below ground and one above, with glass walls allowing a clear view of the entire base, filled with various pieces of equipment and facilities that Lin Wu couldn’t name. The most eye-catching was the bottom level, which featured many large glass tanks lining the walls, containing either zombies or humans soaking in them.
