Chapter 262: Chapter 161: New Member
The blizzard event had been over for four days, and through relentless effort, both the main and the sub-bases replenished their food supplies. In three days, the system would host the Ice Fishing Festival, and currently, among the two bases, only Lin Wu had one intact fishing rod. The workshop could also make fishing rods, but they were very crude, simply a wooden stick with a string attached. A spin fishing rod came with an additional shiny lure hook, while pole fishing rods had two more hooks.
While discussing fishing rods, the Blood Mist army launched an attack on the supermarket base, which, crudely speaking, involved stuffing zombies into the player’s base with no waves and no coordination. It was no threat to the supermarket base, which possessed assault rifles. It was bad enough during regular times, but the worst was waking up in the morning, opening the door, and finding it crammed full of zombies.
Maya heard about this from the radio and asked, "Thirteen hours of night, haven’t you guys taken shifts to rest?"
Lin Wu replied, "Sleeping alone is too boring... No, I mean, keeping watch alone is too boring."
Maya paused for a moment and then asked, "Do you need someone sent over?"
Lin Wu said, "Forget it, you don’t have many people."
"I’ll contact you in a bit, Invincible Base is calling us on the channel." Maya connected with Invincible Base, "Hello, I am Shadow Maya."
Invincible: "Hello, Maya, I’m happy to hear your voice. Is Stone there?"
Stone: "I’m here, what’s up, old buddy?"
Invincible paused for a few seconds: "Brother, are you guys short on people?"
Stone joked, "Sorry, the Commander positions are all filled."
Invincible laughed and said, "No, some things happened here, we need to adjust our personnel. They’ve been with me for a long time, and it’s not easy to decide who to help."
Stone suddenly understood, "Oh... Who is it?"
Invincible said, "Peanut and Emerald Feather."
Stone: "Just the two of them?"
Invincible said, "Only them. Stone, if it’s difficult, just say it outright, we’re all friends here."
Stone laughed heartily, "Of course, we’re all friends. But wait a moment, I need to consult with the Deputy Commander."
"No problem, I’ll wait for you."
seconds later, Stone picked up the walkie-talkie and said, "No problem, when will they come over?"
"Can they come by tomorrow morning?"
Maya whispered something, and Stone said, "Okay, as early as possible, preferably before eight in the morning. Tomorrow we are forming a group to go out."
Invincible: "No problem, thanks a lot."
Stone: "You’re talking nonsense. You’re recommending your capable right-hand men to me, I should be the one thanking you."
The two chatted a bit more. Invincible didn’t hide his strategy, explaining that he planned to establish a sustainable ecological zone centered on Invincible Base, combining fishing and agriculture. Within this ecological zone, food could sustain 15 people, and after spring, 20 people. In plain terms, they were prioritizing production over combat, giving up on scavenging to focus on managing the base.
Invincible had his reasons for this strategy; they had no Blood Heart nearby. Although sieges were a significant threat, once they were fully staffed, they had strong firepower. Another important reason was that the importance of firearms had overtaken that of personal strength.
For example, Lin Wu could easily take down Stone in a PK; in a fight against zombies outside, Lin Wu was a hundred times stronger than Stone. But when the base was under siege, the combat effectiveness of Lin Wu with an AR15 was almost the same as Stone with an AR15.
Invincible chose a realistic path: develop agriculture and train all citizens as soldiers. They would absorb players focused on survival, using firearms to enhance their strength. This way, they could ensure food supply on a daily basis and utilize everyone’s combat power during defense. The only downside was limited combat ability outside of defense situations. They couldn’t, like Shadow, gather a team on a whim to clear out the cement factory.
Was Invincible’s development strategy right or wrong? Stone and Maya discussed it and didn’t think there was any serious flaw in Invincible’s strategy. Surviving in isolation was also viable. As long as they managed personnel properly, Invincible Base could safely spend two years of game life at the repair shop.
Stone asked, "Should we stuff someone into the supermarket base?"
Maya: "Not advisable."
Stone: "I’m just worried about the warehouse; we’ll have to dismantle a building to set up a dormitory. Take two building material packs to the supermarket base tomorrow."
Maya: "Okay."
...
"Hey, Peanut, Emerald Feather." Lin Wu was very surprised to see the two; after Maya introduced and informed him that they had officially joined Shadow, both Lin Wu and Shana expressed their welcome. Maya traded the building material packs to Lin Wu, who said the materials were at capacity and could only be stuffed into the car’s trunk.
Recently, Shadow’s reputation had declined, with rumors claiming they were not only domineering in their daily operations, but also fiercely internal. The rumor mill even suggested that the Deputy Commander was banished to the sub-base. Therefore, Peanut and Emerald Feather were somewhat anxious before joining Shadow, but after joining the base, they found Shadow to be very harmonious.
Maya distributed an assault rifle to Peanut; Emerald Feather was meant to receive one as well, but given the snowy weather and the possibility of a sudden siege, the last assault rifle was reserved for Stone. With Lin Wu opening a sub-base and Snow Egg suppressing noise, Shadow Base currently had only a four-star threat level, and Stone with an assault rifle should be able to handle it.
Lin Wu, with his unfiltered vocabulary, criticized Stone for being stingy and took an assault rifle and 30 bullets from the supermarket base for Emerald Feather. This made Peanut ask, "Where did you guys smuggle these arms from?" Invincible Base only had one assault rifle, while Shadow Base not only had one for each person but also provided two magazines of ammo for those on duty.
