Chapter 233: Chapter 150 Stick Technique
After delivering the food supplies to the supermarket base, Lin Wu headed to the cement factory where he first laid eyes on Little Knife in a frenzy. With arrows on her person and a quiver on her back, she looked striking, but she wasn’t using her bow to shoot; instead, she was up close and personal, clashing with Blood Zombies. The others, armed with various crossbows, spread out and took turns shooting zombies—one arrow after another.
"What’s going on?" Lin Wu asked.
Shana replied, "Little Knife wants to regain her ’Undying’ and ’Immortal’ status."
"Not likely," Lin Wu said. "I’ll go pull some aggro." Little Knife must have injected herself with Serum; he let her have some fun for a while.
Lin Wu lured out over twenty Blood Zombies from inside the factory, including two Blood Frenzy, and with everyone nearby calling out, Lin Wu shouted, "Little Knife, take one."
Unhappy, Little Knife lunged at the Frenzy, hoping a more violent approach would help her reawaken her ’Undying’ and ’Immortal’ nature. After a skirmish, the crossbowmen hurried to scavenge the corpses while Little Knife, joyful with the Serum found on the Blood Frenzy corpse she had trampled, left her troubles behind. Under Maya’s guidance, Little Knife devoted herself to archery.
Switching from close combat to ranged, Shana gave up the crossbow to master the staff. The length of the staff was an advantage, ensuring no infection as long as she made no mistakes. Post-battle, as Shana often found herself in danger, there was nothing to worry about with the fearless shield, Lin Wu, by her side, immune to the Blood Plague.
The Swiss army knife Little Knife had given him was extremely useful. Even in direct combat, it significantly boosted Lin Wu’s efficiency in killing monsters. His reactions after the double Agility boost were noticeably faster, stabbing and withdrawing as quick as lightning. But how come this thing is so low on durability? Just an hour of stabbing and it’s almost worn out?
Exasperated, Maya said, "Stop, leave some for us." It was one thing to take on a Blood Ferocious Ma, but now he was directly fighting zombies, even more brutal than his own swordsmanship. Infection wasn’t an issue, and if he got hurt? There were plenty of medicines; the Fortress had sent a large shipment. Just last night, Lin Wu even considered boiling bandages for lack of food, but luckily Shana, being rational, stopped him. They ended up with just a stewed bowl of alcohol painkiller soup.
Lin Wu was addicted to killing now, using the inconspicuous little knife from Little Knife for the first time. Zombies approached, clung on, and before they could open their mouths, he’d stabbed them dead. What a thrill—it was this feeling of farming monsters head-on. It was a shame most melee weapons couldn’t be repaired and had to be broken down into scrap in the workshop. The Swiss army knife was no exception.
However, Lin Wu remembered the ’Deadly Backstab’ attribute of the weapon, planning to scavenge for a few with it in the next few days.
Once Lin Wu transitioned into the role of Corpse Looting, Maya began reorganizing the team. The first to step up was Shana. When playing her role well, her staff appeared incredibly powerful, offering consecutive, rapid pokes that highly increased the chance to knock down or stun. If an enemy were knocked or stunned, Shana could follow up with a chop to perform a likely execution on the grounded zombies.
Maya saw the technique, telling Shana that a staff had two ends and if used flexibly, she could quickly switch between thrusting and chopping.
But when Shana performed poorly, it became a drag. Whenever she faced more than three zombies, even if she stunned or knocked them down, she couldn’t follow up with the staff. Maya confirmed that Shana could only handle up to three zombies at a time for now.
Next up was Snow Egg, the scrawny pole wielding a 25 kg Vajra spade. As someone with doubled Physical Strength, his stamina was inexhaustible like a spring. Sadly, he lost half of his Strength stars in Waste City and had reduced recovery. With the boon of Staff Expertise, if zombies got hit by his Vajra spade, they were likely to die on the spot. The problem arose with those two or three out of ten that didn’t die immediately. At that point, Snow Egg would spin his spade, knocking down or executing eight or nine out of those remaining.
Overall, Snow Egg was strong, but there were always some that slipped through, causing him trouble. Maya’s advice was for Snow Egg to not engage more than two zombies at a time. Even if he couldn’t kill them or knock them down, he could avoid infection from Blood Zombies getting too close.
Maya’s swordsmanship against Blood Zombies required a Serum injection, and it was the same for Horse Soul, incapable of dealing damage without sustaining injuries.
Snow Egg and Shana’s cooperation was terrible; Snow Egg’s heavy weapon swings were dangerous even to allies; he needed space to attack. Shana was better off—she wielded her long staff with deftness and precision. Yet visually, it was far from appealing, not just unattractive but also incongruent.
Maya tasked Horse Soul with overseeing the area and took Shana away from the Blood Mist, giving her a rubber stick to deal with ordinary zombies. It worked well but was still jarring. Maya felt that aside from her staff thrusts, Shana wasn’t utilizing her primary Agility advantage. Taking the staff herself for a spin, Maya realized the issue was that Shana’s movements were not smooth.
Shana didn’t have to move at all when using the staff—she could stand her ground. But when thrusting forward, she always took a step to increase the attack range, instead of using the sliding motion of the staff. Unlike other passive skills which are enhancements and boosts, Staff Expertise is about judgment. The system won’t help you coordinate your movements.
Two hours later, Maya and Shana returned to the fray, and Shana’s next appearance impressed everyone. The staff moved much more fluidly in her grip, and she no longer moved back and forth, focusing all her finesse on her wrist. One moment it was a thrust, the next Shana had the staff’s head in her hand, flipping it 180 degrees to chop down on a zombie’s skull. A pull with her right hand brought the staff back, and a push sent it thrusting into another zombie’s head.
